Our dear Winifred Olds broke her shoulder in a fall this past week, and now has to have her entire right arm in a sling; no fun at all. Friends and family are helping, but there are many inconveniences and she can't drive, so rides to the theatre and/or a cheerful card or call might be in order from those of you who know this Grande Dame of local theatre.
Winifred Olds 2041 Osage Okemos MI 48864 517 - 349-9425 Here is her e-mail address, though I'm not sure she checks it often; her invitation to join the GLUT list is still outstanding. winifredolds@gmail.com 5/30 - 6/9 - It’s the 1950s and the golden age of ‘live’ television, Benjy Stone (played by *American Idol performer Adam Woolsey), junior writer on the King Kaiser (Joe Baumann) Comedy Cavalcade Show, is assigned the daunting task of baby-sitting veteran Hollywood swashbuckler Alan Swann (Mike Stewart) while he's doing a live guest appearance on the show. The effort to keep the reckless Swann off the booze and out of the papers during the rehearsal week nearly drives Benjy to the brink. But when he's given an unexpected glimpse into Swann's broken heart, Benjy begins to discover a thing or two about life and love.
Various characters, including Benjy's pushy mother Belle Steinberg Carroca (Colleen Bethea) and the other TV writers, K.C. Downing (Mycah Artis), Sy Benson (Tom Klunzinger), Alice Miller (Lisa Pappas), Herb Lee (Ron Lott) and the show’s producer Leo Silver (Gary Mitchell) add to the chaos of putting together a television production. Other featured actors include: Bobby Maldonado, Michael Erwine, Kris Maier and Sophia Vitello. My Favorite Year is a highly entertaining family oriented show that is loaded with clever dialog, good music and creative dance numbers. The show’s award winning director is Dan Pappas and he is aided by musical director James Geer and choreographers Fran Norton and Elizabeth Todd. One thing is certain, My Favorite Year is sure to be your favorite show. Dates: May 30- June 2 and June 6-9, 2013. What does that mean, exactly? Well, the show is fully rehearsed, costumed, memorized, lit - in otherwords all elements of a professional production are at play. However, our director, cast and creative team technically still have a handful of rehearsal hours at their disposal. Immediately following each preview performance, the director will jump down onto the stage and beg 10 minutes of the audience's time to pick their brains about the show. The discussion can be spirited, with audience members debating meaning and points of interest in the show. The director uses the notes taken during these post-show discussions to fuel the remaining rehearsal time and fully refine the play. In the case of a world premiere, like 10:53, these feedback sessions are invaluable, giving the playwright and director amazing insight into how the piece is playing with an audience. And, most importantly, the critics are not allowed in to see the show until we have gone through the important preview process. Preview performances are priced slightly lower than performances after opening night, so treat yourself to a preview performance at the Williamston Theatre - and help us to make a great new piece of theatre!
10:53 Preview Performances Thursday, May 16 at 8pm ~ Pay-What-You-Can Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 at 8pm and Sunday, May 19 at 2pm All tickets on these days are just $15! Reservations strongly recommended! 10:53 by Annie Martin at Williamston Theatre May 16 – June 16, 2013 A World Premiere The worst part of a hospital waiting room is normally the waiting but, in the midst of a prolonged family medical crisis, Kathryn Fuller regards the waiting room as a welcome refuge from her increasingly chaotic life. However, the real world quickly invades her new home away from home, and she’s surrounded with her over-the-top family life, rebellious, love-struck daughter and a mysterious stranger who, oddly, shows up at the same time every night. What happens when the universe decides our lives need a shaking up, whether we like it or not? Will Kathryn get drawn into the ridiculous comedy, drama, and potential romance swirling around her beloved waiting room, or will she burrow deeper into her seclusion from the world? Contains mature language. Directed by Tony Caselli. Featuring Sandra Birch, Julia Garlotte, John Lepard and Zachera Wollenberg. Dark Comedy by Martin McDonagh Directed by John Roche This hilariously horrifying dark-comedy centers on Maureen Folan (Abby Murphy), a beaten-down, fortiesh spinster living in literal and figurative discomfort, with Mag (Janet Lockwood), her passive-aggressive, harridan of a mother in County Galway, Ireland in 1989. Emotional and physical one-upmanship ensues when their lives are touched by two brothers, Pato (Blake Bowen) and Ray (Joseph Mull) Dooley, who live up the road. Can Maureen’s life-sentence of miserable drudgery be commuted, allowing her a path to love and fulfillment? Can Bleak House become Great Expectations? Note, a few weeks into rehearsals, two of this four-person cast had to drop out for personal reasons and Jan Lockwood and Joe Mull have stepped in. They deserve extra credit for jumping onto this challenging show when the train was already rolling! I'm a little embarrassed that our Ripples newsletter, sent out March 29, has the cast wrong —but all reports indicate that the new cast is equally powerful. Don't miss this show! Black Box has general seating but reservations ensure admission in case of a sellout. $12/$10 8pm Fri/Sat. 2pm Sun. 482-5700 - www.riverwalktheatre.com Are U N or out of the UN?

A girl's magical speech to the United Nations. 5/17 - 18 - Fairy Tales and Other Stories by The Studio Performing Arts Center, will NOT be at Hannah Center May 4-5 (as previously reported) but WILL be in the Arena Theatre at MSU (in the basement of the Auditorium Building) May 17 @7pm and May 18 @2pm.
The show features two plays; a “playlet” entitled “Beauty Shop” which features Cinderella (Sarai Chavira), Rapunzel, Briar Rose (Jillian Kingdon), Goldilocks and Alice (Linda Webster) going to Fairyland’s “Fantastic Frills Salon” to meet Olivia, the salon owner (Lauren Kreuer) and her assistant, Hilda (Laura Stanton) for a new style. (These are our youngest actors ages 8-13 and this play runs about 15 minutes.) The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon by Don Zoldis is a full-length two-act play featuring our High School/Middle School actors in all of the roles from the Grimm’s Fairy tales recapped into one play. The play portrays a troupe of traveling actors that attempt to perform all 209 of the Brothers’ Grimm fairy tales as one giant story. The production starts out with the stories of The Dirt Merchant and Rumpelstiltskin as “The Girl”, a naive and foolish girl sells her soul for her immediate wellbeing and happiness. We later find that she has to give up her daughter, “Rapunzel”, as the consequence. This story leads into more well-known tales such as Snow White, Little Red Cap, The Fishergirl,Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella, and later to lesser known tales such as The Devil’s Grandmother and The Talking Fish. Comedic and upbeat, this fun play has interesting comments about our society and our values. Actors include Robin Harris as “The King”, Korinne Salisbury as “Narrator 1” and “Prince 3”, Parker Van Voorhees as “Narrator 2”, “Hansel”, “The Host” and “The Wolf”, Brandon Townsend as “The Actor”, “God Voice”, “Wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters”, Kaleel Van Voorhees as “The Girl”, “The Princess”, “and “Little Red”; Holden Santi as “Devil 1”, “Prince 2” and “The Talking Fish”; Alex Kingsley as “Prince 1”, “The Frog Prince” “Walt” and “The Woodcutter”; Callie Reichel as “Rumpelstiltskin:, “Crab Person 2”, “Dwarf 1” and “The Doctor”; Jessica Caicedo-Olaya as “The Dirt Merchant”, “The Cobbler Elf”, and “Snow White”; Danielle Holloway as “Rapunzel”, “Witch 2” and “Cinderella”; Breana Scates as “The Girl Without Hands”, “Crab Person 1” and “Devil 2”; and Alicia Herbst as “The Enchantress” and “The Devil’s Grandmother”. Playgoers will get a chance to see how all of the characters and stories are interconnected in a whirlwind ride with ever-changing actors and a hilarious journey to the end. Show times are May 17 at 7pm and May 18 at 2pm at the MSU Arena Theatre (Black Box theatre) in the basement of the MSU Auditorium building; (dress lightly as it tends to be a little hot down there.) Tickets are $10 per person to help defray the cost of the production. 5/11 - Ruhala Performing Arts Center presents - one night only
