OOPS -- (too many RWT 2pm Sunday shows got into my brain.)
The last performance of the wonderful, free, outdoor (or in Dart Auditorium in case of rain) SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK at LCC is 7pm, today, Sunday June 23 - not 2pm. Don't miss it; fun for ALL ages. http://www.lcc.edu/cma/events/ Kudos to Matt Ottinger who enhanced Winifred's page on his WONderful theatre database: lansingtheater.wikispaces.com -- where you can "search" any local actor. With the help of LCP Historian Althea Phillips, Matt has Winifred's resume back to 1942!!!
http://lansingtheater.wikispaces.com/Winifred+Olds ALSO Winifred's Memorial Service is at 11 am Tuesday, June 25 at the Okemos Community Church, 4734 Okemos Rd Okemos, MI 48864 The family will receive visitors an hour before the service. 6/22 - "Stop Copying Me" - last show 6 pm Saturday at MSU summer circle. A small show with large charm.
6/21-22 & 28-29 - "Princess Lucy in the Land of Pretend" Fridays at 7 and Saturdays at 12:30 and 4:30 at Riverwalk's Black Box. Nostalgic TV puyppet-show/ventriloquist comedy $6 for all ages. Following both Saturday shows is a Puppet Workshop (by donation) where Princess Lucy will show kids how to make their own paper-bag puppets and how to manipulate them. (Kellie Stonebrook & Bruce Bennett) Princess Lucy is going to be waaaay cool, I expect -- but due to other commitments, I can't see it until the last performance. Anyone want to send me an early review to send out?????? www.riverwalktheatre.com I'm surprised and sad to report that Winifred Olds died earlier this evening.
When I talked to her Monday (and delivered the card many of you signed for her at the Barneys) she was able to chat, and there was optimism about going home that day — but instead, she took a turn for the worse. She went into Hospice last night, and now she's gone. Hard to believe... Winifred was a mega force in local theatre forEVer, it seems, certainly well before I got involved in 1972. She was very active at Lansing Civic Players, and she and Wes helped Bee and Karl Vary start the Community Circle Players (Okemos Barn/Riverwalk Theatre.) She has been Starlight Dinner Theatre's lucky charm, appearing in all eight seasons of that theatre's existence. She's also performed at the Barn and Riverwalk, plus the New Vic Supper Theatre in Flint, Eaton Rapids Theatre and Coventry Players in Mason. She retired from WILX-TV and had a post-retirement career as a tour director for Rail America and Tour Connection. Matt Ottinger's wonderful theatre database site has a list of her past 20 years' shows, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. I don't know who has the LCP archives, but I'm sure it's full of Winifred. She was active as an actor and as a director. http://lansingtheater.wikispaces.com/Winifred+Olds It’s 1964, and there’s a new local kids’ show on Lansing’s WMMB, Mid-Michigan Broadcasting! It’s called “Princess Lucy in the Land of Pretend” and it features puppets, ventriloquism, games and silliness.
Riverwalk Theatre and Fairy Dust Theatre present a fun children’s show with elements of nostalgia for the adults. Miss those past kids programs you loved? Want to show your children or grandchildren what those shows were like? Well, Kellie Stonebrook and Bruce Bennett have concocted a play that is very reminiscent of those shows. It’s live theater that puts you in the studio audience of a children’s TV show from the 1960s with features of Shari Lewis and Lambchop, Mr. Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, and local shows like Al E. Khatt (from WJIM, now WLNS), The Land of Play (WKAR), and Soupy Sales (WXYZ, Detroit). After each of the Saturday performances will be a 1-hour workshop for kids, “Making Your Puppet Come to Life.” Kids can make their own paper bag puppets with simple materials provided, and practice puppetry with Princess Lucy herself. Princess Lucy is Kellie Stonebrook, local actress and excellent ventriloquist. Kellie and her “Fairy Dust Theatre” are booked all over Michigan to perform with her puppets at schools, libraries and day-care facilities. She attends the annual international ventriloquists’ convention and has taken classes from Jeff Dunham and other famous ventriloquists. Writer/director Bruce Bennett also performs some puppetry. This is the third children’s show he’s authored to be performed at Riverwalk. A commercial artist, Bruce also has acted or directed at most of Lansing’s theaters, including the defunct BoarsHead and Stormfield, and the thriving Williamston Theatre. He’s also acted in movies, including a nice speaking role in “Machine Gun Preacher” which starred Gerard Butler. The idea for the show came from Bruce’s fond memories of attending broadcasts of Bozo and Al E. Khatt at WJIM as a child, and working years later with Howard Lancour, local TV kid show host, in advertising and community theater. “Howard had wonderful stories of those days,” says Bennett. Bruce is also in touch with a group of local TV station employees from the old days who get together once a month at a local restaurant. “Princess Lucy” performs in Riverwalk's Black Box June 21-22, 28-29 at 7pm Fridays, and at 12:30 and 4:30 Saturdays. Tickets are $6. Call the Box Office at 517-482-5700 for reservations. (Tickets can be reserved on the web for $7 www.riverwalktheatre.com) BABY the musical - opens tonight at MSU Summer Circle

Michigan Ave, Marshall MI 49068 www.greatescapestagecompany.com Coming off last month's sold-out production of ON GOLDEN POND, Great Escape Stage Company in Marshall is now offering the hilariously adult musical comedy COMPANY, written by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. Focusing on both comical and serious themes of love and marriage, the plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, COMPANY is a concept musical composed of short comical vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 43rd birthday. The original 1970 Broadway production was nominated for a record-setting fourteen Tony Awards and won six. COMPANY was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships - and is considered both ground-breaking and pivotal in Sondheim's long musical career. As the composer/lyricist puts it, "Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with COMPANY bringing it right back in their faces." The GESC production is being directed & choreographed by Amity Reading - an Associate Professor of English at Albion College recently featured as Titania in the MCP production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - and who last appeared on the GESC stage as all the Femme Fatales in "The 39 Steps." Truly an ensemble show, the COMPANY cast includes a veritable Who's Who of local stage favorites and some of the area's strongest voices: Tim Lake, Deb Culver, Alan Elliot, Kerry Wilson, Sue Kernish, Chris Blackford, Donna Daines, Paul Rauth, Don Bolthouse, Hope Tolliver, Kyra Hill, Julianna Gilger and Madelyn Schnoor. Costumes are by Carole Bolthouse and Technical Direction will be handled by Randy Lake. Performances begin Thursday, June 20, and continue for eight performances thru Sunday, June 30. Tickets for all performances are $15 and a complete performance schedule can be found at www.GreatEscapeStageCompany.com or by calling the GESC Box Office at 269-781-2700 to make reservations (which are strongly suggested.) Great Escape Stage Company is a small professional not-for-profit theatre located at 155 West Michigan Avenue (S.E. Corner of Eagle) in Historic Downtown Marshall. Riverwalk is going to be marching/riding in the July 4th parade and marketing our September production of M*A*S*H. The contact we had that had a Jeep for us has backed out of the commitment, and we need an army Jeep... does anyone have a contact or an "in" with the National Guard? We could really use a green Army Jeep if we can find one.... the show took place in 1952 to1954, so if it is old, its FINE.... we just need it to RUN! Let us know as soon as you can.
