10/18-27 - The Orphan Trains will be rolling into the Schmidt Community Center starting this Friday and running for two weeks. The play, with lots of fine music, tells of the Orphan Train movement which placed orphans from the east coast in farm communities across the mid-west and western states and Indian Territories from 1853 - 1929. The first stop was in Dowagiac, Michigan. It was in a sense a prelude to our foster care system in the United States. Shows are at 7:00 on Fridays and 3:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. The ticket cost is $7.00 for ages 13 and up and $5.00 for those under age 13. Help spread the word that the Orphan Trains are coming!

Am REALLY looking forward to this one! It promises spooky family fun for school age children and adults - with a "gently haunted" village to tour in the Black Box stage. The Village, designed by Carol Ferris, will entertain (and we hope calm any fears through interacting with the "friendly citizens of Sleepy Hollow".) Folks will be guided along the fun and spooky trail to the auditorium. Be sure to arrive about a half hour early to tour the village - and to get a parking spot. Sometimes parking is tight on weekends when Impression 5 is open. Remember, if the regular lot is full, you can park on the gravel lot beyond the "loop," behind R.E. Olds Museum at the end of Museum Drive. Also, if you park on the west, river-side of the public lot behind Omar's etc, you can walk a short distance on the River Walk to Riverwalk's front door.www.riverwalktheatre.com482-5700 for reservations $5/$7

That's right...Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving’s classic story, is coming to the Riverwalk Theatre October 18 through 27. In this adaptation by Director Tom Ferris, Washington Irving (Alex Freeman) narrates his story of gullible and superstitious Ichabod Crane (David Bolton) who arrives as the new schoolmaster for the children of Sleepy Hollow. He survives the pranks of Brom Bones (Brett Robertson) and the Sleepy Hollow Boys, and woos Katrina Van Tassel (Heather Harper), the daughter of the richest family in town. His fortunes change after a midnight encounter with the Headless Horseman. Audiences arriving early for performances will be invited to tour the gently haunted village of Sleepy Hollow and meet some of the town’s interesting residents. Other cast members include: Michael Erwine, Kristeen Pecora, Vivian Nash, Yvonne Gonzales, Kyle Sodman, Robert Aultz, Jason Herington, Antonio Zappa, Marie Papciak, Sandy Thomasson, Bobby Maldonado, Anna Maier, Kevin Parson, Diane Cook, Lisa Gries, Hannah Jones, Danny Ferris, Olivia Sowa and Jeff Boerger. About Richard Henzel Richard Henzel is a Chicago-based stage, film, TV, and voice-over actor. If you've seen the movie "Groundhog Day," you may recognize his voice as one of two DJ's on Bill Murray's clock radio. Among his many acting credits is his one man stage show "Mark Twain In Person" in which he has been appearing since 1967 in forty states, Canada, Great Britain, on the Mississippi River aboard the Steamboat Delta Queen. Richard prepared the script for "Mark Twain's All Hallows' Eve" especially for this benefit performance. Reviews of Richard Henzel as Mark Twain "...surpasses the common notion of what one-man shows are capable of achieving... His Mark Twain is a down-to-earth sort of fellow, a crusty codger you'd as likely meet in a saloon as in a literary den." --Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune "By the witchery of his talent, reinforced by the appeal of Twain, Henzel wafted the large audience gently, irresistably back to a lecture hall of 1906." --Harold Protsman, Herald-Times Reporter, Manitowoc, WI "As an example of American theatre at its finest, Henzel is magnificent." --Walters, Cambrian News, Cardiff, Wales Photo of Richard Henzel by Suzanne Plunkett; invitation design courtesy of Owen Neills. Read more at ktfund.org I can't really "review" Crazy Little Thing Called Love at Starlight, since I am IN it. But I CAN report that opening night was a HIT with the visiting authors, Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, who enjoyed watching the premiere of their new script, soon to be PUBlished - by Dramatists' I think they said. (And all our names will be printed in the published script as the "original cast." How cool is that?) It was a real tribute to Linda Granger (now in her ninth season presenting successful dinner theatre in west Lansing) to have these authors choose her for the premiere. (Starlight's produced five other wacky Jones Hope Wooten Comedies.) This is the kind of show that only comes alive when the audience is added. We "ride" on the waves of laughter.
I also heard compliments about the delicious chicken dinner from the new caterer, Creative Catering. NOTE: you need to make reservations 24 hours in advance if you want to have dinner. Dinner is at 6:30. ($33/$28) You can always get "show only" tickets at the door ($15) which starts at 7:30. Best seats are available for tonight and next Saturday (who watches those silly old sports events...?!) but there are some seats available for ALL remaining shows. Tonight, and next Fri/Sat. Call for reservations (even "show only" reservations get you a better seat since they can set chairs in advance.)Reservations: 243-6040 www.starlightdinnertheatre.com Plymouth Congregational Church is proud to present the “Voice” of Ken Beachler with the piano artistry of Sergei Kvitko on Sunday night, October 13, 2013, 7:00 PM. They will be performing two works which involve narration and piano accompaniment.
This special “Concert” will be perfect for introducing the power of the word with humor and music to people of all ages. Ken, was the founding Executive Director of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts and recently has devoted himself full-time to theater and to narrating for various musical ensembles, including the Lansing, Midland, Rochester and MSU symphony orchestras and the Michigan Chamber Symphony in Detroit. He is a longtime emcee for the Lansing Concert Band. Ken has appeared in many theatrical productions throughout the Michigan area. Earlier this year Sergei made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall. His appearances as a pianist generate excitement and critical acclaim. A voting member of National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (GRAMMY), he is a much sought-after recording engineer and producer. For the last fifteen years Sergei has been the organist at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Lansing. Admission prices are: $15 for adults, $10 for students and children under the age of 6 free. “The Toy Box” by Claude Debussy The plot of The Toy Box is a very familiar love triangles; the soldier falls in love with the doll, she flirts with Punch (Polichinelle), the war between the Punches and the Soldiers breaks out, the soldier is wounded, the doll cares for him and nurses him back to life, and they live happily ever, with their children, geese and sheep. As indicated by Debussy, The Toy Box was meant to entertain children. But, the subtle humor of the text, the inimitable beauty of Debussy’s music, as well as the clever use of musical quotes (from Mendelssohn’s Wedding March and Marseillaise) make it enjoyable and satisfying for all! “The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant” by Francis Poulenc Poulenc wrote The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant, in 1940 after Sophie, his five year old niece, got bored with playing his piano improvisations. She put Jean de Brunhof’s book by the same name on the piano and said, “Play this!” Jean de Brunhof’s wonderful portrait of Babar and other loveable creatures, together with Poulenc’s charming melodies, spicy harmonies, and seemingly inexhaustible array of musical devices that depict different characters and various scenes make this work especially enjoyable |
