2 Person musical with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt (The Fantasticks) based on the Jan de Hartog play The Fourposter.
Directed by Linda Granger
Music Director – Judith Evans
Accompanist – John Dillingham
The story spans fifty years of marriage, from 1895 to 1945, as it focuses on the ups and downs experienced by Agnes and Michael throughout their marriage.
Comments from Bridgette Redman’s review of our 2006 production: “I Do! I Do! is not a play that stands upon a pulpit and preaches. It is not a play that lectures from an ivory tower to teach something. Nor is it a play that depicts a horrible situation in an attempt to change the audience's views. It doesn't even assume that it knows better than its audience about anything.
Rather, it is a play that focuses on the good things in every day life. It is a play that connects with its audience and invites them to celebrate marriage and love that lasts a lifetime. If I was frequently teary-eyed and verklempt throughout this musical (and I was), it was because it was so true to my experience. It put to music emotions and connections that were far more meaningful than most of what I see on stage. It was real to me.
When Agnes and Michael sang My Cup Runneth Over in Act I, my heart sang along with them. I Do! I Do! turned into an evening of joy and celebration.”
Agnes – approximately 30 years old, mezzo-soprano
Michael – approximately 30 years old, baritone
