Director Deric McNish includes the following quote in his insightful Director’s Note which highlights the hypocrisy and subjective truths and self images the book/play contains. - “When I sell liquor, it’s bootlegging. When my patrons serve it on a silver tray on Lake Shore Drive, it’s hospitality.” Al Capone
Jacob Covert is our doorway into these contradiction, playing Nick Carraway, narrator/outsider, both charmed and disillusioned by the high society of his cousin Daisy and his neighbor Gatsby. DJ Shafer is an elegant, charming Jay Gatsby driven in his pursuit of Daisy, the fascinating, flighty Ariel Fahey. Trevor Early as Daisy’s husband Tom Buchanan, and Rachel Beck as Nick’s golfer girlfriend Jordan Baker, are high society but not so high morality. Grant Cleaveland strongly plays his pivotal role avenging his doomed wife Myrtle, played with so much fire and life by Emma Callis that it’s hard to believe she can “play dead” so well so long.
This stylish show continues on the Pasant stage through October 22.
