Theresa Gilman’s script is complex and fascinating, first performed in 2000 at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. I’m told the script was revised somewhat by the author and the setting for this production is 2003 — a relatively “old” script, but frighteningly timely in this “me-too” era. Besides embracing Janet’s character as the stalker’s victim, it offers perspectives from Theresa’s editor Howard (Greg Pratt) fellow journalist Mercer (Ben Holzhausen) and receptionist Harriet (Sabrina Dahlgren) — as well as sympathetic Detective Beck (Michele Booher-Purosky) with a touch of humor from Bob Purosky as the “breast-obsessed” film-maker Les Kennkat. Michael Banghart is Tony, the stalker — skillfully bringing a sweet, vulnerable charm that morphs into obsession.
Director Brian Farnham, previously noted as a performer/director of musical comedy, has polished up his serious side with this production. He not only directed this talented cast, but also designed/built/painted the set and gathered properties. He’s long been a fan of playwright Rebecca Gilman; his Director’s Note tells us, “I love the discomfort of her dialogue; her writing is both infinitely relatable and savagely visceral.”
This is not a show for the faint of heart. “Adult language and situations” could be triggering to victims of stalking or sexual assault. But it is a compelling piece of theatre that draws attention to a problem that is all too persistent. “When is romantic pursuit appropriate and at what point does it objectify and victimize?”
