This LCC co-production with Peppermint Creek has us sitting on the LCC Black Box risers/seats relocated, literally facing Peppermint's Miller Performing Arts Center movie-theatre-type seats. These serve as the “stage” being swept and re-swept of popcorn, cups, wrappers… It’s a regenerating mess… which may be an analogy to the characters’ lives.
Annie Baker’s Pulitzer Prize winning script has been called a “moving drama about the beauty and sadness in small lives” (Charles Isherwood) “rarely has so much feeling been mined from so little content.” (Jesse Green) “a strange, alienated intimacy” (James Woolcott)
There are many movie references, notably Pulp Fiction’s Samuel L. Jackson Ezekiel 25:17 quote: "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.”
Which of these characters is righteous, selfish, evil and/or a shepherd… or trying to be. I’ll leave that up to you.
THE FLICK continues through March 25. It begins earlier than usual, since it is 2 and a half hours, including intermission. 7:30 -Fridays and Saturdays plus 2pm Sundays.
