Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang-Madcap Comedy on the Riverwalk Stage3/17/2015 3/19-29 - Vanya (Doak Bloss) and Sonia (Gini Larson) have spent their prime years caring for their now deceased parents in their family home. Now middle-aged, they are stuck in fading, if comfortable, lives of boredom and regret. Their lives are punctuated by moments of frenzied sibling bickering and the gloomy divinations of their cleaning lady (Colleen Bethea), who fancies herself the local seer. Meanwhile their self-involved sister Masha (Tanya Canaday Burnham), a glamorous movie star, has jet-setted around the world achieving fame and fortune. Then, unexpectedly, Masha comes home, accompanied by her hunky young lover Spike (Devin Faught). Long-repressed resentments bubble over in a weekend full of wacky costume parties, unwelcome financial plans, and unexpected attractions. The normally quiet household is thrown into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors, including a young would-be-actress and fan (Kylie Bisel), get swept up in an intoxicating mixture of lust, rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape.
2013 winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, is a laugh-out-loud farce with a touch of naughty spice. We hope to see you at Michigan AACTFest 2015! 3/13-20 - And the REST of your weekend, you should be figuring out when to attend The Garage Sale, my bittersweet look at love and loss, seen through the eyes of two toys who meet for the first time when they are put up for sale at a two-family garage sale. This is a Starlight UNdinner Theatre show — or “Starlight Lite” as Linda is calling it. Only $20 includes a dessert buffet and beverages - AND a real “garage sale” fundraiser before and after this one-hour show. There will also be an author/cast/director “talk back” after each show (except Saturday the 14th because I’ll be at the Riverwalk party!) As you may know, I also design the program for Starlight, and it warmed my heart to read the comments in the actors’ bios and the director’s note: “Thanks to Jane for trusting me and Starlight with her beloved play. It is very dear to my heart for many reasons, and I am so excited to be on the other side of the footlights directing it 19 years after playing Rag Baby! Chris and Angie could not be more perfect as Teddy and Rag Baby. An absolute joy to work with, they bring great ideas, energy and depth to their roles... It is a beautiful allegory about loving, taking risks and living life to the fullest, versus succumbing to your fears, living in isolation and avoiding love and life’s adventures.” - Linda Granger “Any show where I can work with Angie is a treat. She’s exceptional on the stage, professional in her preparation and puts you at ease during the performance. Thanks to Jane Zussman for the delightful script, Linda for trusting me with Teddy, and for her friendship….I hope everyone will enjoy the show and take away from it all of the wisdom that is so evident.” - Chris Klaver "At the very first reading, I became quite enamored with this beautiful little tale that Jane Zussman has created. I laughed, I cried and as a grown-up that’s not ashamed to admit she still talks to her dolls, I fell in love with these two characters. What an honor it is to work within the parameters of all this local creativity! May your hearts always hold tight to their childlike wonder no matter how battered and torn they may be.” - Angela Dill THE GARAGE SALE - one weekend plus the following Friday, March 13-14-15 & 20 $20 including Dessert 6:30, Show 7:30 (It’s only an hour long, so you can get out before the basketball game. ;-}Sunday Dessert 1 pm; Show 2 pm. Time for my “blitz” of promos on The Garage Sale - the script I wrote back in 1989, between marriages, that was produced at LCP in 1996 with Linda Granger as the bedraggled but joyful Rag Baby — and now she’s brought it back to Starlight Dinner Theatre’s first “dessert only” show.
This show was praised back in ’96, by none other than the ever-impartial and wise Mike Hughes ;-}and I have high hopes it will be well attended in this remarkable revival, directed by Linda, and starring the talented Angela Dill and Chris Klaver. "Garage Sale is a remarkable mini-gem. It's just about perfect in everything - its writing, direction, performances and length...The action takes place on one table of a garage sale...Tuxedo Teddy has a lofty price tag and immaculate condition. He has spent most of his life on a shelf, encased in his original box. Rag Baby has lived big and shows it. She's a tattered mess, with great memories. These two manage to bond - quite literally, thanks to Zussman's clever ending. You could sum up the show in a cliche: It is better to have loved and lost (an arm, some stuffing, etc.) than to never have loved at all. Still, Garage Sale is more. It has moments of great heart and humor.” Mike Hughes, 1996 ONLY ONE WEEKEND (March 13-15) AND “by popular demand” extended to include THE FOLLOWING FRIDAY March 20. Dessert is at 6:30 and show at 7:30 (Sundays dessert 1pm and show at 2pm) $20 includes a dessert buffet and beverages - show-only $15 There’s a kids price of $13 for 12 and under, but don’t bring little kids. There’s talk of what it means to be “anatomically correct” and a debate on the existence of Santa Claus… kind of pushes it to PG. www.starlightdinnertheatre.comRESERVATIONS required for dessert buffet — 517-243-6040 Okay, okay...this isn’t “theatre” but a remarkable friend of ours who’s far outlived usual expectations living with ALS is in need of a one-day-a-week overnight caregiver. (see http://healingwithdrcraig.com/) He is an inspiring guy, and this could be a good fit for one of you or someone you know. (Jane)
Please consider sharing… Dear Friends, Please let me know if you know anyone who might enjoy this one-day-a-week overnight (10:30pm-7:30am) caregiver position. My current Wednesday and Thursday overnight worker needs to cut back to one night/week, so the new worker may choose whether their position will be Wednesday overnight or Thursday overnight. Brief description of the position: · I will be in bed when worker arrives. They assist me with some tasks to prepare for bedtime. When I go to sleep, the worker will be able to sleep on a sofa bed in my living room and will wake-up a few times during the night when I call for assistance through a monitor. Tasks at that time include holding a urinal for me, helping me drink water and rolling over. · Absolutely required: reliability, honesty, kindness and patience. Caregiver experience is NOT required, just the four attributes mentioned. · Job location: Haslett, Michigan · I am able to pay $8:00/hour. · Many workers have told me that the experience of working with me has touched their lives in very positive ways. · Please email drcraigoster@comcast.net for more information. Peace and gratitude, Craig Craig Oster, PhD 20-year survivor of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) & Co-founder/Scientist/Advocate at THE HEALERS campaign |
