Peppermint Creek Theatre Company Presents The Best We Could (a family tragedy) by Emily Feldman
A Tender, Funny, and Haunting Look at How We Carry Each Other Through Life’s Unexpected Turns

Chad Swan-Badgero, Artistic Director, 517-927-3016, [email protected]
Emily Clark, Director, 517-930-4736; [email protected]

Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to announce its production of The Best We Could (a family tragedy) by acclaimed playwright Emily Feldman, running November 7 – 9 and 13 – 16, 2025. Directed by Emily Clark, this deeply poignant and quietly humorous play follows a father-daughter road trip across the country that becomes a journey into family histories, long-silenced truths, and the complicated ways we love one another.

Both intimate and expansive, The Best We Could (a family tragedy) explores the stories families tell—and the ones they bury. When Ella agrees to accompany her father, Lou, on a cross-country drive, the two find themselves confronting time, memory, and the inevitable gaps between who we are to ourselves and who we are to the people closest to us. With the help of a narrator who guides, observes, interrupts, and questions, the play layers narrative and reflection into a theatrical experience that is both surprising and deeply human.

“This play is extraordinary in the way it illuminates tenderness, imperfection, humor, and heartbreak through such simple and recognizable moments,” says PCTC Artistic Director Chad Swan-Badgero. “It asks us to look honestly at the people we love—and at ourselves—and to sit with the ache of wanting to do better, even when we can’t always find the words.”
Peppermint Creek Theatre Company selected The Best We Could (a family tragedy) for its 22nd season, “Based on a True Story,” for the authentic and relatable way it portrays family dynamics. Audiences are likely to see themselves, their parents, and the people they have been to one another reflected on stage with startling clarity and care. The production embodies Peppermint Creek’s mission to present thought-provoking theatre that encourages dialogue and connection through shared experience.

Director Emily Clark echoes this sentiment. “The title of this play suggests that we’re about to sit down to watch something super sad and, well, tragic. This is so far from the truth. There are moments of joy, laughter, love, friendships, and some sadness, Isn’t that what life is? And aren’t we all just doing the best we can?  I hope people walk away from this talking to each other a little more, checking in on each other a little more, and loving each other a little more.”

Peppermint Creek’s production stars local performers Shannon Bowen, David Dunkel, Sarah Hayner, Jeff Magnuson and Amy Rickett.
