Paid Dinner Theatre by Postseason Productions

1/30/2025

Calling all Lansing-Area Actors,

Postseasons Productions, a Michigan-based theater company, has an exciting PAID audition announcement for actors in the Lansing area.

The show is called The Dinner Detective, and it is an interactive murder mystery dinner show.

My name is Michelle Drake and I am the location manager for our new Lansing location. I am tasked with building up the cast, so I’m reaching out to theaters in the East Lansing and Greater  Lansing areas who might be interested in sharing this opportunity with their cast members.

Dinner Detective is different from your standard dinner theater show in that several actors are planted among the audience. It’s as if they, too, are just enjoying a night out on the town and
couldn’t possibly be involved with the tomfoolery in front of them. Upon entry, everyone in the audience makes up a “code name” to go by for the duration of the performance. Once the
murder takes place, two detectives lock down the dining room to solve the mystery. The real  audience helps the detectives figure out who among them is the killer, who isn’t being truthful
(i.e. an actor), and who is an innocent audience member. If played well, an actor may not be  suspected of being part of the show at all.

We are searching for actors who enjoy improv, physical comedy, and diverting suspicion. The  show is scripted, but improv experience is desirable. Some characters are boisterous and
cartoonish - obviously part of the show - while others are meant to blend into the audience and  avoid suspicion. We have four different murder mystery shows that we rotate through depending  on the season, and cast members are encouraged to learn multiple roles to accommodate for  availability.

To get involved, request more information mailto:[email protected] and someone from our production team will be in touch!

Cast of Characters:  (12 Women, 8 Men)
Note: Ages are not mandatory to be a character. All characters are open to any actor that can realistically play to the age listed.

Elizabeth Bennet: Age 20, the story’s protagonist. Known as Lizzy to her family, she is very bright & lively, quick-witted with a mischievous sense of humor. The second-born daughter with some first-born qualities, she takes no nonsense from anyone and is often embarrassed by her family’s silliness. Confident in who she is with no added pretense.Mr. Darcy: Late 20s, is so grand that no one dares to call him by his Christian name. Enormously rich, he owns a grand mansion (Pemberley) and a large chunk of Derbyshire County. Clever, proud, and reserved, but somewhere inside there beats a loving heart.Jane Bennet: Age 23, the eldest Bennet sister. Beautiful, gentle, affectionate, and reserved. Tends to think the best of everyone. Very much the perfect golden child. Best friends with her sister Elizabeth.Mary Bennet: Age 18, serious, socially awkward and unaware, bookish. Thinks her younger sisters are ridiculous. Hobbies are playing piano and reading books of sermons. Takes great pride in her moral pursuits.

Kitty Bennet: Age 17, the 4th born but very much under her younger sister Lydia’s influence. Excitable, giddy, emotional, and easily led. Still figuring out who she is.Lydia Bennet: Age 15, the youngest Bennet sister, high spirited, sexually precocious, one of those girls who just want to have fun. She is gossipy, immature, and self-absorbed. Can be very thoughtless, but doesn’t have a bad bone in her body. Her sisters find her very spoiled and even her father admits she scares him sometimes.

Mr. Bennet: Early 50s, Clever and dryly witty. He finds his wife and younger daughters silly and doesn’t hide that Elizabeth is his favorite. He acts largely unbothered by the chaos around him and seems to always be holding coffee and a newspaper.Mrs. Bennet: 40s-50s, was probably a Lydia in her youth. She still has a romantic heart and large emotional swings, but now all her energies are devoted to securing advantageous marriages for her beloved daughters. She is a bit overdramatic about most things.

Mr. Charles Bingley: Age 25, a rich gentleman. Warm, friendly, and eager to see the good in everyone. He falls in love quickly with Jane Bennet. Best friend to Darcy although no one can fathom why. Wears his big heart on his sleeve.
George Wickham: In his late 20s, a handsome, flirtatious member of the militia. A childhood friend (and now foe) of Mr. Darcy. Appears sincere, but in modern terms, is a womanizer and gold digger.

Miss Caroline Bingley: In 20s, Mr. Bingley’s sister. Snobbish and judgmental, but desperate for Mr. Darcy’s approval. Takes great pride in her wealthy status, and has a distaste for the lower classes.

Mrs. Louisa Hurst: In late 20s, Mr. Bingley’s married sister but we never see her husband in the show. She is very much her sister Caroline’s wingwoman in all her judgmental pursuits. Prides herself on piano proficiency.

Lady Catherine De Bourgh: In her 60s-70s, a wealthy aristocratic widow, aunt to Mr. Darcy. Domineering, unpleasant, extremely stubborn, and unmoving in decisions. Her way is the only right way.

Mr. Collins: 30ish, a rather dim-witted yet utterly sincere clergyman who has an unjustifiably high opinion of himself. Greatly in awe of Lady Catherine to whom he owes his living.

Georgiana Darcy: Age 17, Mr. Darcy’s much-loved sister. Looks up to her older brother greatly. Exceedingly sweet and full of genuine soft sunshine.Mr. Gardiner: Late 50s, Mr. Bennet’s brother. Kind, sensible, and practical

Mrs. Gardiner: In 40s, affectionate aunt to Elizabeth

Denny: In his 20s, good-natured officer, a friend of Wickham

Cast of Characters (General casting notes: Any race acceptable for any role. Ages playable, not literal. Other specific character notes below. Jack and Algy are similar in age; found to be brothers at play’s end, but that is unknown thoughout):

John (Jack) / “Ernest” - Worthing, J.P.:  “Jack” is Algernon’s friend, Gwendolen’s suitor, and Cecily’s guardian. He has invented a brother named Ernest, whose identity he assumes while in the city. Age: plays 25-35 years old.

Algernon “Algy” Moncrieff: Jack’s friend, Lady Bracknell’s nephew, Gwendolen’s cousin, and love interest to Cecily. Ostentatiously cynical and constantly hungry. At play’s end, the mystery of Jack’s parentage reveals that Jack and Algy are actually brothers. Age: similar to Jack, plays 25-35 years old.

Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D.: Canon Chasuble is the rather foolish, pedantic Rector attracted to Miss Prism. Age: 50+.

Merriman: The servant at Jack’s country manor house in Hertfordshire. Age variable adult.

Lane: Manservant to Algy. Very dry, though funny. Age variable adult.

Lady Bracknell: Algernon’s aunt. She opposes Jack’s marriage to her daughter Gwendolen. Overall, she is realistic, hard-nosed, and an upholder of convention—though not entirely conventional herself. Female-identifying, but can be played by either a female actor or by a male actor in drag. Age 50+, matronly.

Hon. Gwendolen Fairfax: Algy’s cousin, Lady Bracknell’s daughter, with whom Jack—as
Earnest—is in love and to whom he proposes marriage. Age: plays 25-35.

Cecily Cardew: Jack’s pretty, young ward, whom Algy woos but who remains
determined to marry a man named Earnest. Not quite as naive as she
may appear, Cecily keeps a diary, which “is simply a very young girl’s
record of her own thoughts and impressions and consequently
meant for publication.” Tutored by Miss Prism, Cecily often fails to
attend to her studies. Age: plays as late teens.

Miss Prism, Governess: Cecily’s absent-minded governess who is wooed by Chasuble. Age: 50+.
