The Downeaster Theatre will be holding open AUDITIONS for its upcoming summer production of “Ring Around Rosalie” April 12-14.

This fast-paced farce begins in 1933, at the end of Prohibition. Benito “Benny” Bellarosa, a New York gangster, is attempting to make good on his promise to become a respectable businessman, while his rebellious daughter Rosalie concocts a plan – she leads Benny to believe that she is “in the family way,” hoping he will allow her to leave the house and marry her boyfriend. Unfortunately, Rosalie’s lover disappears and Benny is left with more suitors (and daughters) than he can handle. With the bankers arriving any moment, Benny is desperate to find a suitable husband and get a ring around Rosalie! Written by Whitney Ryan Garrity.

Nora: Irish maid, 20s
Bella: Benny’s wife, 40s
Benny: 40s
Spats: Benny’s right hand, 30s

Danny: CPA, 20s
Rosalie: Benny’s daughter, 20s

DANCING AT LUGHNASA
By Brian Friel
Directed by Mary Job

Performances– Sept. 6-9 and 13-16 at Ledges Playhouse in Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge
Rehearsals begin July 22 (TBA read-throughs in May/June.)

Set in Ireland in the late summer of 1936, in the fictional town of Ballybeg, DANCING AT LUGHNASA is a memory play told from the perspective of the adult Michael Evans, about his mother and four aunts. Kate, the eldest, is a schoolteacher; Agnes and Rose knit gloves and help keep house with Maggie and Christine (Michael's mother), who have no income at all. Their older brother, Jack, a Catholic missionary priest who has worked Ugandan leper colony for the last 25 years, has also recently returned home, suffering from malaria. Meanwhile Michael's father, Gerry, charming and completely unreliable, pops in and out, keeping Christina on tenterhooks.  Lughnasa won a Tony Award  for Best Play, the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play in 1991 and 1992.
“A bewitching evocation of the past. … Intoxicating nostalgia and the sorrow of unvarnished reality go hand in hand.”

AVAILABLE ROLES: The roles of Michael, Kate, Maggie and Father Jack have been precast and will be played by Joe Dickson, Gini Larson, Shannon Bowen and Doak Bloss respectively.
AGNES – (35) The 3rd Mundy sister, she ekes out a living doing hand knitting piecework along with her younger sister, Rose. Protective of Rose, secretly in love with Gerry Evans.
ROSE – (32) Lively, frank and naive, Rose is what would have been described in the 1930’s as “simple”. She is sheltered by Agnes.
CHRISTINE – (26) The youngest of the Mundy sisters and the unwed mother of Michael. Torn between her attraction for Gerry and her knowledge of his unreliability.  Stern with Michael.
GERRY EVANS – (33) Michael’s father. Charming, likeable and completely unreliable.
