Yay - once again here’s a “virtual” show that I can “review” to keep my Quarantine brain working. Kudos to The Curtainless Theatre for coming up with something new and live in their Zoom reading of Aeschylus’s Prometheus Bound which aired tonight on Facebook Live.
As regular readers will expect, my noted aversion to Shakespeare and other “antiquated language” plays has not been cured by quarantine. I know many are thrilled by the poetic classiness of such language but… (sigh)…I’m not that smart. There is a lot of suffering inflicted by capricious and vengeful gods; I did understand that much.
Adding to my confusion was distraction by the typed comments streaming by in real time. It was a little like having audience members talking in my ear. (I probably could have turned that off, but it was also interesting and part of the “live” experience.)
Still, there was much to like about this piece. It was short (just over an hour) and channeled some real acting into the limiting Zoom-square format, with touches of costuming/hair/makeup/sound effects/music dressing it up. I especially liked Robert Mueller’s expressive face, Ellie Wiese’s hair changes and convincing insect aversions — along with the sonorous gravitas of Kameron Going as Prometheus. Director Dale Wayne Williams put this together with the tech help of the capable Cody Skalmowski. Tim Edinger, Chris Didur, Monica Holland, and Joe Clark rounded out the cast.
