LCC 10-Minute Play Festival

7/24/2025

Sometimes confusing but always refreshing — New Scripts — short and sweet, written by LCC students and staff, graced the Dart Auditorium stage — since the “under the stars” outdoor venue was cursed, first by heat and then by thunderstorms.

Director Paige Dunckel led an adaptable cast through four contrasting student-written scripts.

Please Silence Your Cellphones by Natalie Kowalsky portrayed a sentiment we actors can understand when the show is repeatedly interrupted by cell phone rings. And the “M” word that must not be spoken… Some of the hysteria was so vocally revved up, I couldn’t make out the words, but the sentiment was clear!

All These Buckeyes by Joshua Thompson-Linton cast a new perspective on immigration as the duly elected Bingus Schtunk (Debbie Lundeen) railed through her anti-Ohio-ian pontifications, countered by the not-to-be-oppressed Gibble (Caroline Abaalkhail).

In the Closet by Stephanie Morales set up Selene (Mykyla Julian) in a confrontation with her perhaps-alter-ego Sol (Lydia Castillos) who happens to be a skeleton — and no one wants a skeleton in their closet.

Bonded Souls by Sierra Barris posited an after-life dream that flipped perceptions for Max (Denise Huguez) and Danni (Mya Johnson-Wade).

After intermission the LONG/short a cappella musical Fred Side Story filled the whole second act. It was written by staff, Fred Englegau, and directed by Chelle Peterson. This campy send-up of the classic play/movie you have already guessed — was filled with fantasy and magic, freezing the other players intermittently as the hopeful Fred (Brett Vue) burst into melodies you know — with his own words — pursuing the winsome girl with the similarly problematic name: Mildred. (Lydia Castillos) Joining in with their own twisted West Side Songs were a chorus of Debbie Lundeen, Caroline Abaalkhail, Sean Smith, Denise Huguez, Callie Marrison, Mikyla Julian and Mya Johnson Wade.

The Ten Minute Play Festival continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7 — in the LCC outdoor amphitheater behind Dart Auditorium, weather permitting. Free of Charge; bring you folding chair if the weather is good.

If you like this format, MORE Short Script Fun is promised with the Emerging Playwrights Festival at Riverwalk Theatre, one night only, Saturday August 2, 7pm, free of charge, donations welcome) featuring short scripts written by area high school students.)

The Sound of Music - Evolve

7/19/2025

Evolve Theatrics is celebrating their 20th Anniversary with a grand production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music — and you’d better get those tickets online asap because tonight’s full-house/standing ovation crowd will be telling their friends.
Director Helen Hart has assembled a remarkable cast of great singers to inhabit these roles. The music is impressive, utilizing a lush pre-recorded soundtrack. Music Director Josiah Scott has presided over excellent choruses of nuns and children. The choral work is wonderful.

Delta Presbyterian Church has been a supportive ally in allowing their sanctuary to grow a platform stage with two mountain-mural flats off to each side, painted by Lynn Davis. The elevated stage bumps the church venue up a notch toward actual-theatre sight lines. Set design by Bob Hill enabled quick set changes, but this is still a long show: three hours and ten minutes (which includes a 15 minute intermission.)

Josie Isbell was a wonderful Maria, embodying the childlike effervescence of the “troublesome” would-be nun and growing into the devoted stepmother/wife — with an outstanding voice. Another stellar voice was Dr. Melanie Walker as the Mother Abbess, also making her Evolve debut. She is a classically trained soprano and voice teacher and gives her all to her soaring anthems. Marty Snitgen tackled the difficult role of Captain Georg von Trapp evolving out of his gruff beginnings. Caitlin Christianson was appropriately gushing and garish as the Georg’s would-be wife, Elsa Schrader. Mike Stewart played the charmingly compromising Max Detweiler with natural aplomb. Philip Andrew Connor “jumped in on late notice” into the role of Rolf to woo the winsome Liesl (Carlyanna Smith) making her debut with Evolve.

Evolve’s The Sound of Music continues July 19, 20 and 25, 26 at 7:30 pm (3pm Sunday the 20th only)
at Delta Presbyterian church 6100 W Michigan Ave Lansing, MI  48917 just east of Creyts Road.

All Seats are reserved and may be purchased at:

Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help

7/6/2025

Williamston Theatre’s latest offering is a hilarious and heartfelt nostalgia trip exploring and exposing a 1973-era Catholic family. Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help by Katie Forgette is directed by Karen Sheridan, and features some of Williamston’s favorite talents.

This is a “memory play” engagingly narrated and inhabited by Sophia Psiakis (last seen in Be Here Now). She paints herself as an “unreliable narrator” and her stepping in and out of the action  and allowing/preventing characters to present monologues — adds to the fun in a simultaneously realistic and surrealistic recounting.

Sandra Birch is a wonderfully quirky and brash Aunt Terri, living with the family due to an “incident” of her own. Faith Green is the only newcomer, inhabiting the naive movie buff kid sister. Emily Sutton-Smith is perfect as the overworked, overemotional mother, and John Lepard is a multifaceted delight as bossy Dad, intimidating Father Lovett and righteous Church Lady Betty.

Any adult/older teen audience member could enjoy this show, but those of us “of a certain age” who remember the early 70’s will have an extra appreciation for the mores of the time, the movie references — and the perfect kitchen set, decorated in the classic avocado and harvest gold, complete with perfect period accessories, right down to the green stamps magneted to the frig - and that linoleum pattern that I’m pretty sure was in my first house. (Set Sam Transleau; props/set dressing Michelle Raymond.)

The plot revolves around an accidentally tape-recorded facts-of-life lecture from older to younger sister - and the anticipated wrath of both biological and clerical “Fathers.” The full house at this matinee was delighted and intrigued. Make your reservation soon; Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help continues through August 3. http://www.williamstontheatre.org.

Note also that Williamston is hosting a Comedy in Billtown event Tuesday, July 15 at 7:30 - An evening of stand-up comedy! Hosted by Louis D. Michael. Featuring: Nicole Melnyk, Donte Lillard, Adam Degi, and Sohrab Forouzesh. All tickets $20, seating is reserved.
