A Very Williamston Christmas

Thanks to Guest Reviewer Heath Sartorius!

A Very Williamston Christmas just completed its opening weekend at Williamston Theatre and is the best way to guarantee laughter for yourself the rest of 2024 until it finishes its run on Dec. 29th

The hilarious script won Wilde and Thespie awards for best new script when it was done by the theater two years ago, I unfortunately missed that production, which is why I was so glad to get a chance to see this production on its second go round. (I've been informed that even if you saw the first production you will still find some updated or altered jokes in this production which keep it fresh!)

Writer Robert Hawlmark has crafted a funny and incredibly well paced script that offers great delight to any resident of Ingham County and especially Williamston. This play, which lampoons many a made for T.V. holiday movie, incorporates some great inside jokes for the Mid-Michigan area, obviously Robert Hawlmark was able to do some great research on the Williamston area which was extra surprising after learning he and director John Lepard have never even been in the same room at the same time!

John Lepard orchestrates this comedy with a small but highly engaged cast and many great tongue in cheek moments that blur the fourth wall and engage the audience as much as the actors, who maintain the high energy throughout

Dani Cochrane leads this production as "Feliz Navi" (don't get ahead of it.) She and co-star Nick Yocum (George) bring both a charisma and chemistry that makes them immediately likable while still maintaining stock characters of a Hallmark movie and the comedic timing of a comedy such as this.

Actors Emily Sutton-Smith and Patrick Loos have their work cut out for them playing the remaining seven characters, which the show is gleeful self-aware of. Quick changes and plot points that would require them to be onstage with, well... themselves, add to the charm and stakes of the show. So an extra kudos goes to Stefanie Din, Aaron Delnay, B Beetham, and Adam Kruger for helping these quick, crazy, character shifts and technical moments that the audience might not even realize are happening throughout.

The rest of the designers:
Sonja Marquis- Sound Design
Shannon T. Schweitzer- Lighting Design
Michelle Raymond- Props and Set Design
Karen Kangas-Preston- Costume Design
Bartley H. Bauer- Set Design
Alison Dobbins- Projections Designer (whose projections add to jokes during scene changes, including a product placement that gets an applause break.)

All deserve a shout out for helping Williamston Theatre put everyone in a more Christmas Spirit than even Silver Bells could!

A Very Williamston Christmas continues Thursdays at 2p
Fridays at 7:30p
Saturdays and 2p and 7:30p
And Sundays at 2p
From now until Dec. 29th with a Conversation Sunday on Dec. 15th's production

Sherlock Holmes and the Great Royal Goose Chase

It was great to be back in the Starlight Dinner Theatre ORIGINAL experience at the candlelit cafetorium of Waverly East Intermediate. The cherry chicken, au gratin potatoes, roll and cheesecake were tasty — provided by James Avenue Catering and Bakery of Williamston — and served by Starlight volunteers.

Starlight volunteers stepped up in many ways, under the indomitable leadership of Linda Granger, to set up and serve the meal. Producer/Founder Linda bought the previous round tables (which the school had replaced with bench-attached tables) and set them up with folding chairs. Thanks from the audience for the luxury of leaning back and enjoying the show!

Sherlock Holmes and the Great Royal Goose Chase is a silly musical farce with a lot of purple hearts and grains of salt attached. Not only did they have only three days to rehearse onstage but they recently lost an actor, so Director Mike Stewart had to step in, book in hand, and still delivered a formidable and funny Inspector Lestrade. Jim Lorenz’s panel-turning set provided a variety of locales — and the logistics of turning them was mostly covered by the fine five-piece orchestra. Music Director Ellen Hoard and Choreographer Caitlin Christenson also performed onstage.

Edward Heldt brought us an energetic and agile Sherlock Holmes, literally and figuratively one step ahead of everyone else, singing and dancing and solving the case — which is too silly to outline here; lots of devious characters and goose/golden egg chasing.

Paul Levandowski was a befuddled Dr. Watson with great old-fashioned facial hair. I particularly enjoyed his “who’s on first” style interchange with Sherlock. Jacqueline Lutz and Caitlin Christenson played twisted sisters who are not what they seem. Matt Lorenz brought the Hershey Kiss into the plot. The Ensemble, Laura Johnson, Ellen Hoard, Cheryl Sheridan, Ruth Howard and Dan Templin played a wide variety of roles aided by Linda Granger’s many costumes (with costume help from the cast).

This musical has been called “immersive” but I would call it “accented” with gentle dabs of audience participation, nothing to scare you away. Volunteers are identified ahead of the show and instructed by the elegantly attired “Captain Cameron” Dan Templin, with a prop and a line or two to deliver. It all adds to the fun.

Sherlock continues November 16 & 23-24

Honk!

Midway Theater Company has another youth-show hit: Honk! the musical of the Ugly Duckling story is on stage this weekend at Dwight Rich School for the Arts. A well choreographed crowd of 38 mostly-teen talents fluff their feathers (figuratively) and flock together in song and dance in this heartwarming tale of being “different” and finding your way to forgiveness and belonging.

The costumes are not animal-representational as ducks/swans/geese/cat… assorted animals, but sort of “color coded” people-clothes to suggest these groups/species. When “Ugly” pops out of his unusually large egg, his mostly brown motley outfit does not match the yellow/orange spectrum of his siblings — and the taunting begins with the song “Look at Him.”

Ugly is well played by Damir Morris, a bright spot in several previous Midway shows who shines in his first lead role with a strong voice and endearing style. Other standouts include Ziah Groot as an engaging Bullfrog (he previously stole our hearts in Finding Nemo and is a regular in Midway shows) and Anastasia Agapidis as Ida the mother duck who accepts her “different” son for who he is — and has a beautiful singing voice. Chase Kimmey is Drake, the ditsy dad duck who has fun moments and Kate Schutte is the dangerously friendly cat.

Christy Duffy is producer, Chase Buher directs, Sarah Grace Groot choreographs, and music director Sean Duffy leads a lively four piece band.

Note that Midway is producing a young-youth production of 101 Dalmations for younger actors 8-12 years old. January 6- February 22. All who register will get a role. More info at the website below.

Three more performances of HONK!  Friday at 7 and Saturday at 2 & 7
Dwight Rich School for the Arts
2600 Hampden Dr, Lansing, MI 48911

Disney's “Descendants”

Thanks to guest reviewer Ellen Hoard:

For their fall musical, The Portland Civic Players brilliantly chose to present Disney’s Descendants. It was a marvelous chance to showcase a big cast of area high school and college-aged actors.

Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s Descendants is a musical jam-packed with comedy, adventure, Disney characters, and hit songs from the films! When four troublemaking teenaged children of infamous villains are sent to attend prep school alongside the kids of beloved Disney heroes, they have a difficult choice to make: should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good?

The show was fun for all ages, and the audience left with smiles on their faces. The young leads, Emberlyn Dilley as Mal and Cooper Wittenbach as Prince Ben, sang with strong voices and delivered tight performances. The other young leads, Jazlyn Morales (Evie), Emerson Dibean (Jay), and Sam Thelen (Carlos) complimented them with solid singing and acting.
Audrey, portrayed by Madison Clelland, dressed all in pink, and Chad, depicted by Simon White with his biceps always in view, were cute as the mean girl and stud of a bully. Additional featured young actors included Jay Bell as adorably nerdy Doug, Claire Reynolds as the timid Royal Page, Claire Jandernoa (Jane), Haven Miller (Fairy Godmother), and Sarah Jandernoa (Coach). It was fun to watch these young actors, along with the adolescent ensemble featuring Natalie Bengel, Peyton Heron, Rachel Jandernoa, Maddy Sharp, and Rana Tekinel, do the heavy lifting of choreography and ensemble singing.

Kelly Sandula-Gruner was devilishly fun as the evil Maleficent. Other adult actors included Emily Perry (Cruella), Lydia Bowling (Evil Queen Grimhilde), Dan Braker (King Beast), Amber Miller (Queen Belle), Leon Miller (Museum Guard), Alex Port (Jafar), Aaron Swan (Maurice), and Candace Dilley (Snow White).

Directed by Erin Hoard, the play used a simple set design with projected images that quickly transitioned the different settings.Assistant director was Antonius Watkins. The music directors were Jessica Cymbal and Alex Port. The cast gave a beautiful and moving, a cappella performance of Go the Distance.
