Williamston Theatre’s latest offering is a hilarious and heartfelt nostalgia trip exploring and exposing a 1973-era Catholic family. Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help by Katie Forgette is directed by Karen Sheridan, and features some of Williamston’s favorite talents.
This is a “memory play” engagingly narrated and inhabited by Sophia Psiakis (last seen in Be Here Now). She paints herself as an “unreliable narrator” and her stepping in and out of the action and allowing/preventing characters to present monologues — adds to the fun in a simultaneously realistic and surrealistic recounting.
Sandra Birch is a wonderfully quirky and brash Aunt Terri, living with the family due to an “incident” of her own. Faith Green is the only newcomer, inhabiting the naive movie buff kid sister. Emily Sutton-Smith is perfect as the overworked, overemotional mother, and John Lepard is a multifaceted delight as bossy Dad, intimidating Father Lovett and righteous Church Lady Betty.
Any adult/older teen audience member could enjoy this show, but those of us “of a certain age” who remember the early 70’s will have an extra appreciation for the mores of the time, the movie references — and the perfect kitchen set, decorated in the classic avocado and harvest gold, complete with perfect period accessories, right down to the green stamps magneted to the frig - and that linoleum pattern that I’m pretty sure was in my first house. The plot revolves around an accidentally tape-recorded facts-of-life lecture from older to younger sister - and the anticipated wrath of both biological and clerical “Fathers.” The full house at this matinee was delighted and intrigued.
