James Goldman's Lion in Winter is one of those classic plays everyone should see -- and here's a fine production, as always, at Williamston Theatre. As the description says, "This classic tale of deception, manipulation and world dominance will draw you into its irresistible web, and might not let you go without a fight." And fight they do - in this historically based fiction of family power struggles in 1183. John Manfredi and Sandra Birch are formidable contenders as King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Both have powerful voices and presences and are worthy opponents in their love/hate relationship. They seem to play chess with their contrasting, conniving, competing sons: Andrew Buck as Richard, Andrew Head as Geoffrey and Michael Barbour as John. Sweet and pretty "pawn" Katie Maggard played the mistress of the king - and sweet and pretty in his own way, but with power to wield, Blaine Mizer as King Phillip of France was another player in the brothers' power struggle.
Emotions ran high, and moments were enhanced by dramatic music that also seemed to fit the period. (Sound Design by Michelle Raymond.) The set was a simple row of arches with drapes, that served the action well, and extended across the entire back wall, giving a sense of the size of a true castle. (Scenic Design, Megan Wilkerson) Kudos to Director John Lepard, meshing this fine cast of MSU acting students with their parental professionals.
