Songs, dances, and laughs abound in the unlikeliest of settings as the Cold War and space race paranoia threaten the good folks at the fictional Milwaukee Space Center in 1955, where the staff is all abuzz at the arrival of rocket scientist Trenton Corbett. The budding romance of Trenton and Mary—the daughter of Space Center commander Major Malone—is jeopardized when a flying saucer lands in Milwaukee. The craft is piloted by Zombina, a buxom alien aviatrix bent on procuring he-specimens to re-populate her planet. Can Mary uphold her lady-like demeanor while using her facile intelligence to save Milwaukee from a Red Menace and a flying saucer invasion? Can plucky delivery boy Billy ever get secretary Charlene to notice his tap-dancing charms?? Can the stalwart men of Milwaukee survive brainwashing by a musical menace from another world who gives new meaning to "stratospheric" soprano??? Taking its cue from pulp movies popular at the time, ZOMBIES FROM THE BEYOND brings the 1950s nostalgically and hilariously to life with a tuneful, toe-tapping score. Character Descriptions: TRENTON CORBETT (20-40; baritone) Dashing leading man. Trenton is the new scientist at the Space Center. RICK JONES (20-40; baritone) A military man, who is actually a Russian spy (complete with a fake accent). Leading lady and all-around genius, she is the perfect 1950's woman and has her eye on Trenton. CHARLENE "CHARLIE" OSMANSKI (20-40) The quirky, comedic secretary who is looking for a man. ZOMBINA (any age; high soprano) The villainous alien who arrives in Milwaukee bent on domination of all men. Editor's note: This is the same director,Garrett Bradley, who did a FABULOUS job with Into the Woods last season. And Urinetown is a wonderful entertaining thought provoking musical. These auditions may be worth the drive...?! As I imagine the show will be, as well. Auditions for the Owosso Community Players’ September production of the 2002 Tony-Award-Winning musical Urinetown The Musical will take place at 7 p.m. on June 25 and 26 at the Vineyard Church, 208 West Main Street in Owosso.
Director Garrett Bradley asks that all who audition come with a prepared song, preferably one from musical theater. Performers will also be asked to read scenes and learn a movement combination. There are many roles available for men and women, ages 16 and up. Vocal director is Chris Sprink. Urinetown is “a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!” Terry Teachout of The Washington Post said Urinetown is “A joyously cynical musical about musicals, whose barbed, knowing wit made me laugh so long and hard that my cheeks were sore all the way home.” The Village Voice called the musical, “Sly and funny,” and famed theater critic Rex Reed reported in The New York Observer, “What kind of musical is this? A fresh, unique, original, impudent, colorful, exciting, irreverent, surprising and wonderful musical, that’s all!!” Production dates are September 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, & 15 at the Studio Theater. Toad of Toad Hall is an eccentric but likable chap given to "crazes." His latest craze involves motorcars. Unfortunately, he smashes them up as fast as he gets them. He even steals one for a wild ride over the countryside. Naturally, this gets him into a great deal of trouble. His dear friends Badger, Rat and Mole do their best to help, but their efforts aren’t enough, and Toad ends up in prison... after an uproarious courtroom scene. His imprisonment couldn’t please his enemies, the weasels, more. They quickly take over Toad Hall and trash the place. Meanwhile, the jailer’s daughter, Polly, thinks Toad is an exceptional fellow and helps him escape dressed as a washerwoman! On his way back home, he has a wild adventure with a barge owner who is horrified to discover the washerwoman is actually a toad. When Toad finally meets up with his friends again, they devise a clever scheme to recapture Toad Hall from the weasels in another wild scene. This enchanting adaptation has been written specifically for simple production, with an extremely flexible cast and many wonderful, small roles. Once you meet mad Mr. Toad, you and your audience will never forget him. For actors under 18, production fees are $45.00 resident; $50.00 non-resident. Adults pay no fee.
