Shirley Lauro’s script is a challenging tapestry of interwoven stories of five nurses and a country western singer and their experiences before/during/after the Vietnam war. Director Diane Cooke and her six strong actresses weave it well, playing not only their “main character” but numerous other roles in others’ stories as their portraits unfold, offering an involving look into the experience of war.
Two new faces to Riverwalk are Brie Roper and Caila Conklin both brought strong characterizations, and Caila added the bonus of a beautiful voice and guitar playing. I was impressed to see “backstage gal” Kelly Jo Garland tackle and tame a major role, when her only previous experience had been playing the silly “Miggot” in The Emperor’s New Clothes. Jessa Bye, likewise, was a wonderful surprise, coming back to the stage with sincerity after (I believe) acting in only one previous show. Anasti Her and Ann Glenn Carlson were also moving and affecting. Tyler Frease was the all-purpose “American Male” slipping in and out of roles as varied as a near-death soldier and a benevolent father, and many more, each distinctive.
Shannon Bowen’s sound design songs brought back memories of my Vietnam-era youth, dramatic sounds and lighting (Cody Skalmowski) set off some scary scenes, and Matt Ottinger’s projections of the Vietnam Memorial wall were effective amplifications of the simple, malleable set (Tom Ferris).
