Adapted by Dennis Kelly with music/lyrics by Tim Minchin from Roald Dahl’s children’s book, the musical introduces us to the remarkably bright but terribly unfortunate Matilda Wormwood, born to the Worst Parents Ever, zestfully played by Megan Meyer (well remembered Owosso’s excellent Sally Bowles in Cabaret) and Owosso favorite Mike Windnagle who turned his usual charm upside down to play the abusive, car-salesman con-man counterpart to his self-absorbed wife.
Mary Maurer brought a loving warmth along with her stellar singing to Miss Honey, Matilda’s benevolent but downtrodden teacher, who proved, along with the supportive librarian Mrs. Phelps (AnnaMaria Horn) that not ALL adults are evil. (Isaac Orr brought extra sparkle and slinky dance moves to “Rudolpho” mom’s dance partner.)
Alexis Bruner played Matilda with spunk and power. This talented 12-year-old from Millington, MI, already has 13 shows under her belt and is obviously talented, dedicated and passionate about musical theatre - with a great singing voice and a convincing British accent.
Not having read the book (I had similar problems with the professional Wharton Center touring version) I found the show tricky to understand with some of the “Britishisms” and the complex lyrics — particularly Matilda’s three “Story” songs she tells to the librarian, which turn out to be relevant in the complex but satisfying ending. If you have not read the book or seen the show before, it might help to preview the plot on Wikipedia (which I did after the fact and learned a few things I did not catch in performance.)
The show is beautifully done, but somewhat dark and complicated, and two hours and 40 minutes long — so I would not recommend it for young children. Maybe 8 or 9 year olds and up?
Matilda continues through September 15 and is likely to sell out. Make your reservations!
