This is an intimate look at whether/when to move grandma to “the nursing home” or the “retirement village” or whatever is next, when home is no longer a “safe house.” It also examines how that house has represented safety to her granddaughter.
The play is largely a character study brought to sparkling life by the incomparable Karen Sheridan as grandmother, Hannah. We loved her in Williamston's Silent Sky, Chapatti and as an amazing Sarah Bernhardt in Memoir. Though her characters are very different, they share a remarkable note of sincerity and charm and the pulse of her characters’ inner-life.
The other two actors have also proved their talents previously at Williamston Theatre. Dani Cochrane has an earnest, natural quality as the granddaughter, Bridget, retreating to her grandmother’s safe house during an unsafe time in her own life. Another Williamston standby, Tobin Hissong, uncle Mathius, successfully balances the conflicted role of history-holder, caregiver, and frustrated but loving son faced with a stubborn mother who refuses to leave her home.
New-to-Williamston Director Cassandra Freeman led this cast of three into our hearts. There is a nice balance of humor and wit served along side the pathos and difficult choices and challenges. The show is a celebration of life and family.
