Paul Slade Smith’s wacky, witty script presents a questionable stakeout of earnest but “challenged” cops trying to catch an embezzling mayor on videotape — and let the twists and turns begin. The fun script and the remarkable stage choreography of doors and beds and clothing and blankets kept the audience laughing throughout. Kudos to director Jeff Magnuson (with some help from “intimacy director,” better known for dance choreography, Amanda Tollstam.) There is disrobing and bouts of “intimacy," but thanks to cartoonish but careful direction and strategic costuming (Kris Maier and friends) it’s only about a PG and should not offend most.
It was refreshing to see four new-to-Riverwalk actors onstage. Steve Neal was charmingly frantic as our first inept cop, with his feisty/fearful partner Rachel Daugherty - particularly amusing in her tied-up maneuvering. Leigh Christopher was the coy but passionate accountant, prone to taking off her clothes. And Derek James Elstro offered an entertaining mix of bravado and panic as “Agent Frank.”
Familiar faces kept the silliness rolling: Doak Bloss was adorably oblivious (?) as Mayor Meekly, and Gini Larson was a hoot as his mousy (?) wife, Mary. Jesse Frawley brought the whole melee into overdrive as the Scottish Mafia hit man, complete with kilt and bagpipes.
The laughs continue through February 16. Tickets and info at http://www.riverwalktheatre.com.
