It may sound like “a downer” but the fascinating variety and intensity of characters is also entertaining and beautiful — even funny at times. All the theatrical surroundings are top notch as well. The impressive set feels ancient and foreign, including art and ruin, and an actual river; kudos to scenic designer Jennifer Maiseloff. Lighting (Becca Bedell) and sound (John Lepard) enhance and complete the experience. Karen Kangas-Preston’s costumes allow for quick transition from veiled to unveiled characters.
