I’ll admit I don’t quite “get” the roller derby scene and am perhaps not the best evaluator if For the Love Of or the Roller Derby Play at MSU’s arena theatre. It is certainly a high energy, woman-powered script by Gina Femia. Alexis Black’s cast of 12 strong women brought a lot of energy to the production which was well received by the audience, with fan whoops and whistles. Though not “real” roller skating, the roller derby matches or “jams” were well choreographed, I guess by the director, as no separate choreographer was listed.
There are some great projections (Mona Jahani) and dramatic lighting (Lillian Meyers) and the script empowers the LGBTQ community, with a lot of “adult language” and team spirit.
For the Love Of (or the roller derby play) continues through 11 - 20 - 8pm Fri; 2pm & 7:30pm Sun; 7:30pm Tue-Thu; - with no Saturday shows due to football - Arena Theatre, lower level of the MSU Auditorium. Tickets on the Farm Lane end of the building.
