This witty, wacky, whodunit seems to channel a little Victor Borge with hilarious and impressive "piano-crabatics.” The multi-talented actors, Mark Schenfisch and Andrea Wollenberg, are able to fully inhabit this two-person tour de force—AND be their own orchestra. The dual piano playing is impressive — and Andrea’s deft, distinct transformations into a vast array of “suspects” are a wonder. (I especially loved the one-woman trio of kids.)
I found myself wondering if this ever could make its way to community theatre and be done with a separate accompanist. Perhaps… but that would subtract a wow-factor that elevates this production to the next level.
Both these actors have played these roles before, with other theatres. I’m sure each brought insights and bits from previous productions and mixed them with director Rob Roznowski’s imaginative staging and choreography — occasionally breaking the fourth wall to great effect. The set (Bartley Bauer) is appropriately askew with off-kilter bookshelves that hide fun props (Michelle Raymond.) Costume/props assist in Ms. Wollenberg’s lightning transformations. The show is a little over an hour and a half of joy and laughter and entertainment. Make your reservations NOW; Murder for Two was almost sold out tonight and certainly deserves to be sold out for the rest of the run - through December 23. Tickets at http://www.williamstontheatre.org - 517-655-7469.
