The show is too dark, complex and philosophical for preschoolers, but there were a few (understandably, brothers and sisters of cast members) whose squirming and remarks did not improve the understandability of young actors still learning to project and articulate. It was sometimes difficult to follow the story. If you haven’t read the book, it’s not a bad idea to check out the Wikipedia summary before seeing the show.
Both of the leads were young (11) for their roles as 14 year olds - but did an admirable job as the boys we’re all rooting for, played by Luis López-Rodriguez and Caitlin Curry, who added boyish sass and rebellion to her/his role.
James Sharp shouldered the demanding role of “old” (54?!) father, Mr. Holloway, with sincere, clear delivery — and Miss Foley (Sophia Tardino) had fun with her character. The highlight, however, was the sinister Mr. Dark, played with relish and power by Elliott Hoagland - a villain we loved to hate.
