The set, costumes and makeup are artfully stylized to create a magical version of jungle life as we are transported into the family of gorillas who adopt the orphan infant Tarzan and raise him as one of their own. There are 40 people in the wonderful ape ensemble. Kudos to costume designers Garrett Bradley, Lisa Bradley and Alissa Britten — and Garrett praises the many, many volunteers needed to create so many of the delightful ape costumes.
Twyla Birdsong glows with warmth and devotion as adoptive mother Kala, soaring on the popular “You’ll Be In My Heart” song. Troy Seyfert is strong and fatherly as Kerchak. Kaleb Kimerer adds that Disney-sidekick sass and humor as young Tarzan’s mentor/friend Terk. Young Tarzan is the talented Evan Worden who morphs into grown Tarzan, the engaging, golden voiced Jake Przybyla, charming both Jane and the audience.
Mary Maurer brings a soulful curiosity to the role of Jane, arrived from a different world, the first person Tarzan sees who looks like him. She arrives in Africa with her benevolent father (Mike Windnagle) and his evil assistant/guide (Connor Kelly, whose villainy was praised by boos at the curtain call.)
All have beautiful singing voices, well supported by Musical Director Jillian Boots and her 14 piece orchestra.
This show is a dance riot and fun for the whole family, but also touches on serious issues of family, identity and tribalism.
It continues though March 3 — and is close to selling out. Make your reservations today!
