Family Musical directed by Brian Farnham
Auditions: Sun. & Mon. Oct. 28 & 29, 7 pm
youth role auditions: Sat., Oct. 27, 2-5 pm for youth roles (18 under).
We encourage youth to audition Saturday but they won’t be turned away from Sunday/Monday auditions.

Show Dates: Jan. 24-27 & Jan. 31- Feb. 3, 2019

Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book, this musical comedy follows the Potts family and their fantasmagorical flying car on a journey of self-discovery and intrigue.

Caractacus Potts: male, 30s to 40s.Brilliant but eccentric inventor, loving father, good-guy hero type. Strong acting, singing (baritone), and dancing.

Truly Scrumptious: female, 20s to 30s. Lovely, strong-willed heiress to the Scrumptious candy fortune. Ahead of her time – feisty, but loving. Strong acting/singing (soprano), some dancing.

Grandpa Potts: male, 50s to 60s. Caractacus’ father – eccentric, not quite as brilliant - lovable Brit. Character acting, singing (baritone), some dancing.

Jeremy Potts: male, 8-15. Caractacus’ son. Genuine and sincere, loves and believes in his father above all. Strong acting and singing (baritone or tenor).

Jemima Potts: female, 9-16. Caractacus’ daughter. Cares deeply about looking after her brother and father. Strong acting/singing (alto/soprano).

Baron Bomburst: male, any age 18+. The nefarious ruler of Vulgaria. A truly petulant little man, he both hates and loves his domineering wife. Strong character acting, some singing (baritone) and dancing.

Baroness Bomburst: female, any age 18+. The power behind the throne of Vulgaria. Dotes on her childish husband, ironically, as she hates children above all. Strong character acting, singing (alto), and dancing.

Boris and Goran: male or female, any age 18+. Two bumbling Vulgarian spies tasked with obtaining Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the Bomburst dynasty. The comic relief of the show. Strong character acting, some singing (baritone/alto), and some dancing.

The Childcatcher: male or female, any age 18+. The evil, creepy, and fiendish right hand of the Baroness Bomburst. Enforcer of Vulgaria’s no-child policies. Strong character acting - likely double-cast in the ensemble.

The Toymaker: male or female, 18+. The put-upon royal toymaker helps foment the rebellion against the Bomburst regime. Acting, singing (alto/baritone), and some dancing – likely double-cast in the ensemble.

Adult/Kids ensemble: 8-10 adults and 5 kids (8-17 years) to play multiple characters - will be very active, and need strong skills in acting singing and dancing

Be prepared to learn a dance combination and to perform a short reading from the script. Please bring a complete list of all conflicts from November 2018 through February 3, 2019 including weekends and holidays. Prepare an audition piece, 16-32 measures. Bring the sheet music. NO a capella singing allowed.

The Downeaster Theatre (TDT) will be holding open auditions for its upcoming fall productions of “Dog Sees God” for youth and college students and “We Live Here” for adults Nov. 1-4.

About “Dog Sees God”: The Peanut's characters are all grown up! When CB's dog dies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group's bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.Written by Burt V. Royal and directed by Kathryn Willis.

About “We Live Here”: Allie Bateman's wedding is Sunday. When Dinah, her precocious younger sister, returns to their parents' home for the festivities, she brings more than anyone expected: a new boyfriend, whose hidden history resurrects passions and painful memories for the whole family. Over one emotionally charged weekend, the Batemans find they must acknowledge and accept loss to gain hope for regeneration. Written by Zoe Kazan and directed by Jordan Climie.

Youth and college students ages 13-23 can audition for a part in “Dog Sees God”, and adults ages 18 and up for a part in “We Live Here” on Thurs., Nov. 1, Fri., Nov. 2, and Sun. Nov. 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm or Sat., Nov. 3 from 10 am-noon at The Downeaster Theatre, 1120 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Lansing, MI. Those auditioning need only to attend one of the audition sessions. Those interested can also sign up to volunteer backstage for this production (i.e. makeup, costumes, box office, etc.). For those youth preparing to audition, TDT will be hosting an auditionworkshop on Thurs., Nov. 1 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for $5.

“Both these plays are so moving in how they handle love and loss,” said Executive Artistic Director, Kathryn Willis.

Community members are encouraged to mark their calendars for the “Dog Sees God” production, which will be performing at The Downeaster Theatre Feb. 14-17. and the “We Live Here” production, which will be performing Mar. 21-31. Learn more at http://www.thedowneastertheatre.com

Two Paid Acting Opportunities

TRIAL PRACTICE ACTING GIG Fall 2018!
Use your acting and improvisational skills, have fun, help students and get paid at the same time!
RE: Dixon v. Providential Life Insurance Company
RIVERWALK THEATRE is once again looking for actors who are interested in playing the defendant and witnesses in mock trials for the MSU College of Law Trial Practice Institute.  If you are interested in an unusual acting gig where you will be taking case materials, building a character consistent with those materials and playing that character in the highly improvisational environment of a civil court case, this gig is for you!  There is a stipend for the work, the amount of which varies depending on the role and the number of trials in which you participate.

The current mock trial case arises out of a dispute over whether the death of Judge John J. Dixon’s, caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, was the result of an accident or was intentional. Plaintiff Mary Dixon, Judge Dixon’s widow, filed for payout of the life insurance policy issued by Providential (defendant) after the Sheriff Altair Khouri and Medical Examiner Dr. Celli investigated the incident and concluded that the gunshot was accidental. Providential refused to pay the death benefit based on information that caused them to conclude that Judge Dixon intentionally shot himself nine days after taking out the policy and had obtained the policy by fraud and deceit.

There are two Trial Practice I classes this Fall. Each class will be organized into two trials, for a total of 4 trials.  In order to cast the mock trials, Riverwalk is seeking actors to play the various roles. Actors, except for those playing Mary Dixon and Robert Wilson, need to be available and prepared to testify in all four trials, which occur over two days. Mary Dixon and Robert Wilson need to be available for two trials, one each day.

Actors would need to be available on ALL of the following dates:
•            Saturday, October 27, 10- 11 am  – Actor orientation meeting with Mock Trial Professors
•            Saturday, November 3, 10 am – 2 pm -  Witness interviews
•            Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2, 8:30am-3pm – Trials
The Witnesses, their approximate ages, and a brief explanation of their roles in the trial are listed below. Except as noted, the actors may be male or female.

WITNESSES NEEDED:
For the Plaintiff-
Mary Dixon (Plaintiff) Mid 50’s-60’s – 2 female actors needed (Judge Dixon’s Widow) – Married 24 years to Judge  Dixon
Sheriff Altair Khouri (45-60’s)- male actor (Sheriff of Darrow County) – Investigated the incident and concluded that the shooting occurred while Judge Dixon was cleaning his gun and was accidental. Sheriff was a friend and hunting partner of the Judge.
Dr. Emery Celli (50’s – 60’s) (Medical Examiner of Darrow County) – Investigated the scene of the incident, conducted an autopsy and concluded that the shooting was accidental. Was a friend and family physician of Judge Dixon.
Anna Martin – (female actor – 40’s -50’s) (Mary Dixon’s sister) - Mary lived with the Dixons for a brief period. She also hunted with Judge Dixon

For the Defense –
Robert L. Wilson  -(45 – 60’s) 2 actors needed -(General Manager for the Defendant Providential Insurance) - Denied the claim based on the insurance company’s investigation which concluded that the death was suicide. Since the death occurred within the two year exclusion time period, the death benefit was denied and the premium paid was returned.
Morgan Crowe – (40’s-60’s) Stockbroker who invested money for Judge Dixon. He was a friend of both Judge Dixon and Robert Wilson.
Carter Berman  (late 30’s – 50’s) (Chief of the Audit and Investigative Division of the Office of the Attorney General of Nita) – Investigated a shortfall in fines and fees submitted to the state by Judge Dixon’s court. The investigation ultimately resulted in the conviction of Judge Dixon’s Court Clerk of embezzlement.
Dr. Allister Upchurch (40’s – 60’s) (Psychiatrist) – At the request of Providential, Dr. Allister rendered an opinion that the death was a suicide. He based this on materials provided by Providential.

If you are interested in playing any of these witnesses or obtaining further information, please contact TOM FERRIS at [email protected], by FRIDAY, October 19.   Please include a photo (If you have not participated previously) , your acting age range, contact information (email, phone and home address) and any information you believe might be helpful to us, including the role(s) in which you are interested.
