This “whodunit” has a wide range of audience appeal for young adults to seniors. As a murder is being investigated, beautiful Josefa is the obvious suspect but the bumbling Inspector Paul Sevigne drives everyone around him mad by seeing her as plainly innocent. Produced on Broadway in 1961, the script was revamped for the 1964 film to accommodate Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau.
PAUL SEVIGNE, Magistrate – A man in his mid-30’s who is new to his position, thinks himself as knowledgeable and assured in all his statements and beliefs. But to the candid observer, he is seen as clumsy and bumbling.
MORESTAN, Clerk – He is near the same age as Sevigne but his looks make him seem significantly older. He is not particularly enthused about working with Sevigne, as he suffers either physically or mentally from the majority of Sevigne’s mishaps. Somewhat hardened and cynical, he shows little excitement with his job and almost always keeps the same discomfited expression on his face.
LABLANCHE – is Sevigne’s immediate supervisor. A loud man (40s to 60s) who is a part of the system and knows not to make waves. He is connected to the Chief Prosecutor. He views this as an open and closed case and finds Sevigne both annoying and incompetent.
ANTOINETTE SEVIGNE – Sevigne’s wife (late 20’s to early 30’s). She is youthful and somewhat naïve. She is obviously still in the first romantic stage of marriage. Flirtatious but assertive. Often catches Morestan’s eye.
JOSEFA LANTENAY – A young woman (mid-20’s) who is sensual, bawdy and very aware of who she is and how she affects men. She and Sevigne are attracted to each other and quite frequently get caught in awkward moments.
MADAME BEAUREVERS – A very beautiful chic woman (late 30’s to 40’s) who carries the situation with an air of great gaiety. She is a real charmer.
BENJAMIN BEAUREVERS – A man (mid 40’s to 50’s) who is supremely elegant, quite handsome, very sure of himself. He makes no effort to conform to any surroundings that are foreign to him. He’s arrogant and well-spoken.
GUARD – An elderly gentleman who knows his way around.
