by Meghan Kennedy
Directed by Tony Caselli
January 28 - February 28

Following the death of her husband after his struggle with the grim realities of dementia, Rose locks herself in her bedroom for the better part of a year, leaving her daughter Emma to care for her through the closed door. When the church sends a pastor to help coax Rose out of her room, he soon finds that Rose is not the only one using barriers to hide her true feelings. This compelling drama is bittersweet, poignant, and touchingly funny.

Featuring David Daoust, Brenda Lane, Aaron T. Moore, and Emily Sutton-Smith.

1/22-23 The Studio presents original Fairy Tale Spoof AFTER EVER AFTER by PK Van Voorhees

1/11/2016

January 22 and 23 at The Hannah Community Center:

We’ve all read the storybooks and most fairy tales end with “they lived happily ever after”. But what actually happens in Ever After?  And what if you get tired of all the “happy happy” and want some delicious drama? The East Lansing Dance and Theatre Company, the performing division of The Studio Performing Arts Center, will premiere “AFTER EVER AFTER, or Four Beautiful Princesses, a bunch of sidekicks and one Evil Villain, a ballet in one act” at the Hannah Community Center Albert White Theatre, 819 Abbot Rd., East Lansing Friday, January 22 at 7pm and Saturday, January 23 at 2pm.

This fun new show, conceived, directed and choreographed by East Lansing Dance and Theatre Company Artistic Director P.K. Van Voorhees, imagines what happens when a bored villain (Cruella De Vil, played by MSU student Marissa Beatty) gets tired of being in “Ever After” with nothing to do. Enter Belle from Beauty and The Beast (East Lansing High School student Kaleel Van Voorhees), Cinderella (homeschooled student Emily McWethy), Snow White (homeschooled student Mikaela McWethy) and Mulan (East Lansing High School student Kathryn Knox) with their bevy of sidekicks.  Cruella employs her Henchmen and the adventures begin!

Other members of the cast (aged 6-20) include:
DeWitt student Elsa Rusthoven ; East Lansing students Annie McIlhagga and Mosey Rojewski; Grand Ledge students Alaina Humphrey and Reyna Estrada; Holt student Mimi Parkerson; Okemos students Alice Ribeiro, Alyssa Forsyth, Fiona Magyar, Lottie-Brooke Mims, Miki Perdikakis and Sarah Flink; Resurrection student Gabriella Torgeson; and St. Martha’s student Christen Chappelle.

The show is approximately one hour, encompasses ballet and physical theatre and is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased ahead of time by calling 517-336-4088 or purchased at the theatre door 30 minutes prior to show time.

1/15-24 - Owosso Community Players present The Boys Next Door

1/6/2016

Play opens in celebration of The Arc Shiawassee’s 60th anniversary milestone on Jan. 15

OWOSSO, Mich.–– Owosso Community Players will present The Boys Next Door this January. Audiences can head to the Lebowsky Center Jan. 15 – 17 and Jan. 22 – 24 to be filled with laughter and compassion as characters experience every triumph and tear life throws at them.

This funny yet touching story focuses on the lives of four men with disabilities, Arnold Wiggins, Norman Bulansky, Barry Klemper and Lucien P. Smith, who live under the watchful eye of Jack Palmer, a despairing social worker.  The play, taking place over a two-month period, consists of brief vignettes and provides a humorous commentary on each of the men’s lives, with a few surprising turns.

Long-time OCP veterans Jerry Ciarlino, Michael Windnagle, Spencer Perrenoud and Artis White star as Arnold, Norman, Barry and Lucien. Quentin Brainerd rounds out the leading cast as Jack Palmer.

“This show speaks to me on a very personal level, as both of my handsome nephews and beautiful niece have autism,” says Windnagle. “We have never seen them as anything but blessings. That kind of love exists everywhere if we simply take the time to visit The Boys Next Door.”

Linda Keenan and Anna Owens both play a hand in the direction of the show.

“Being a part of the cast has definitely been an eye-opener and holds a special meaning for me,” explains Ciarlino. “I work as a school counselor with children of different abilities. This play has given me the ability to look through their eyes and see the certain struggles they experience every day.”

The Boys Next Door is presented in celebration of the 60th anniversary of The Arc Shiawassee County, a nonprofit that advocates and assists people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“The individuals I work with every day are the most accepting, generous individuals I know,” says Lynn Grubb, executive director of The Arc. “I’m hoping that The Boys Next Door will bring more awareness about individuals with disabilities in our community and create a greater degree of acceptance.”

Director Anna Owens and the cast spent time with members of The Arc at their annual Christmas party on Dec. 14 to get a better sense of their upcoming roles.

“Our hope with The Boys Next Door is to create awareness of the joys and blessing that people with disabilities can add to our lives,” says Keenan. “The show is highly entertaining, extremely funny and incredibly poignant.”

The Boys Next Door runs Jan. 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 17 and 24 at 3 p.m. at the Lebowsky Center in Owosso. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13.50 for seniors and students and $7.50 for children 13 and under. Tickets are available by calling 989.723.4003 or online at www.owossoplayers.com/tickets. The Boys Next Door is generously sponsored by Welcome Home Assisted Living.

1/11 - IXION reading of “Secrets” new scripts

1/6/2016

We've been waiting so long, but finally, next Monday, we can tell you our secrets!

Ok, actually we'll be reading eight of the plays submitted for "Secrets".

Every year Ixion puts out a call for short plays around a particular theme with the intent of performing a select group of those plays in the final slot of our production season. Last September we received over 100 submissions inspired by the theme, Secrets. After a selection process, made extremely difficult by so many great submissions, we've chosen eight for further development.

That's where you come in.

We will be holding two staged readings to explore these eight scripts and seek audience feedback. With your and the director's input, we will pass the comments on to the writers and prepare these scripts for full performance in May.

The first reading is Monday, January 11th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Capital Area District Library auditorium, 401 S. Capitol, Lansing, MI. The readings are free to attend and we look forward to hearing your comments and reactions.

Featured scripts are:
  • "An Understanding Wife" by David Berger-- How understanding can a wife be when asked to consider another woman's love for her husband?
  • "Aunt Rosa" by Ron Frankel--Jealousy and mistaken identities threaten lives at a fortune teller's shop.
  • "Blind Date" by Ron Frankel--Is love blind?
  • "Honestly" by Steven Korbar--If nothing is at risk, how honest can a relationship be?
  • "Pumps" by Brett Hursey--A woman struggles to break free of her high heels' control.
  • "Reunion" by David MacGregor--Class reunions always offer a little revelation.
  • "Riding Lessons" by Brett Hursey--What happens when your invisible friend is not so invisible anymore?
  • "Small Talk" by David MacGregor--Is it a crisis when your significant other can't carry on the small talk needed to advance your career?

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Arthur Miller's birth, Riverwalk Theater brings his classic Tony Award winning play, All My Sons, to the stage (January 7-10 and 14-17). Based on true events, All My Sons examines an all-American family that harbors an explosive secret and the sometimes rising cost of living the American dream when discoveries of secret romances, betrayals, and the loss of a loved one threaten to unravel their lives.
Joe Keller (Michael Hays), a successful businessman, lives comfortably with his wife, Kate (Eve Davidson), and son, Chris (Jeff Magnuson), in a suburban American neighborhood.  They have only one sadness in their lives – the loss of their other son, Larry, who went missing in  HYPERLINK "http://www.shmoop.com/wwii/" \t "_blank" World War II.  After three years, Kate still clings to the hope that her son is alive. Chris would like her to give up that hope because he wants to marry Ann Deever (Meghan Eldred), an old neighbor and Larry's former fiancée.  But when Joe places the family prosperity above the lives of others, there are consequences for all.

Award winning director Bob Robinson has assembled a solid cast that also includes:  Joe Dickson, Charles Sartorius, Sarah Hauck, Mark Polzin, Sally Hecksel and Steven Wulfekuhler.
Dates:  January 7-10 and 14-17, 2016.
Times: Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.
Ticket Prices: Bargain Thursdays $10 and $8 for seniors.  $15 regular price, $12 for seniors
