Wilson Center Productions - St. Johns

Introducing Wilson Center Productions

Wilson Center Productions is mid-Michigan’s newest community theater company.  We plan to present one major production each year – one that’s a little off the wall – and then produce/sponsor some all-age events along the way!

We have a wonderful historic auditorium at our disposal, the Wilson Center Auditorium in downtown St. Johns.  It was built in 1928 – we’ve raised over $100,000 to renovate the space – it looks beautiful, has great acoustics and sightlines.

For our first production we have chosen “Jesus Christ Superstar” with performance dates April 4, 5 & 6.    Auditions will take place on Feb. 7 & 8 with rehearsals starting on Feb. 18.  We have 2 excellent directors lined up and are ready to go.  We are committed to quality performances.

We are reaching out for actors to auditions and others who would like to be involved in the various production aspects of the show.   St. Johns is easily a half-hour drive from East Lansing – less from Lansing…  we are also putting together a creative schedule – which will include some music rehearsals in the Lansing area if necessary.  Also, carpooling with friends would work well for traveling north.

Audition Signup Site:        http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/70A054EAEA92AA4F49-jesus

We wanted to take the time to introduce our new company to everyone…  we hope that you check us out and get involved in our efforts to add to the excellent theater scene in mid-Michigan!  Please visit our Wilson Center Auditorium Facebook Page and Web Site.

Fowlerville Theatre seeks Lion & Glinda

Fowlerville Community Theatre (NOT the joint Riverwalk/All-of-us Express production) regretfully needs to re-cast the roles of the Cowardly Lion and Glinda in their  Fowlerville production of The Wizard of Oz. The original actors have a work commitment in which they will be moving to Bulgaria for a few months this spring and summer. We know how sad they are to have to turn these roles down, and we wish them the best of luck in this endeavor, and hope to see them on our FCT stage soon!

We will be holding auditions for the Cowardly Lion and Glinda roles on Tuesday, January 29th, from 6:30-9pm, at the Fowlerville Senior Center. If you or anyone you know might be interested in auditioning and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Becky Frank, Assistant Director, via phone, text or email, at 248-761-6432 or mailto:rebeccamariefrank@gmail.com . The roles are open to anyone currently in the cast as well as to the public.
These roles will be cast on Tuesday evening after auditions and the actors cast in these roles will have to “jump in with both feet,” as rehearsals have already begun for this production, so they must be ready to begin rehearsals on Wednesday evening. These roles will require a major time commitment. Show dates are May 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Please contact Becky Frank with any questions or concerns. 248-761-6432 or  mailto:rebeccamariefrank@gmail.com.

Aided by Bob, a scrappy dog, and a young human, Ivan sets out to become the great silverback and protector he was always meant to be.

Spencer Smith Returns for Every Brilliant Thing at PCTC

1/15/2019

1/31-2/12 - PEPPERMINT CREEK THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES OPENING OF “Every Brilliant Thing” the “funniest play you’ll ever see about depression” the new comedy/drama, by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe.

A one-man play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. You’re six years old. Mom’s in the hospital. Dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for. 1. Ice cream. 2. Kung Fu movies. 3. Burning things. 4. Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. 5. Construction cranes. 6. Me. You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own.

Every Brilliant Thing was a collaboration between playwright Duncan Macmillan (Lungs, and People, Places, and Things) and Jonny Donahoe, drawing on his experience as a stand-up comedian. Macmillan gushes, “Jonny found ways to tell the story and use the audience that I couldn’t have conceived of. By its nature, the play is different every night and thus new and exciting for the audience and the performer”. This text was published after two years of devising, several trial performances around the UK, runs in Edinburgh and London, and a four-month run at the Barrow Street Theatre in NYC, and was recently the subject of an HBO documentary. It has been filtered through Donahoe’s interactions with hundreds of audiences.

British newspaper The Guardian hailed the show “[A] heart-wrenching, hilarious play…One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression—and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop”! Peppermint Creek Artistic Director, and director of this production, Chad Swan-Badgero, reflects on how the play seemed to be waiting to come to PCTC at JUST this moment, “The way this script invites the audience in to the story is both organic and truly moving. It’s hard to believe that one play can pack so many lessons and questions about life in a fast-paced 90 minutes! And with its focus on depression and the anxiety that many Americans are feeling today, it seems as though this play was written specifically for OUR theatre and OUR mission statement to address current issues.”

Swan-Badgero is also thrilled to be welcoming Los Angeles based actor, and Okemos native, Spencer Smith to the PCTC stage. “One-person productions are both a luxury and tenuous experience as a director. You’re working really closely, and in a very deep, personal way with this person, not to mention the entire production rests on their shoulders. So you’ve really got to have a trust and belief in that person. Spencer and I have a long history both as friends and in the theatre, and I consider him one of the very best performers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I sent him the script almost on a whim because he now lives and works in LA. So you can imagine my joy when he agreed to come back to Michigan and PCTC to work on this show! I am certain audiences will instantly connect and believe him on stage, and find themselves better for their time in the theatre with this story”.

The production will take place at Peppermint Creek’s performance venue, the Miller Performing Arts Center, 6025 Curry Lane, Lansing MI 48911. The show will run Thursday, January 31 – Sunday, February 3, and Thursday, February 7 – Sunday, February 10, 2019. Show times are Thursday – Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets can be ordered online at www.peppermintcreek.org, and are $15 general admission, and $10 for students/seniors 65+.

This production of Every Brilliant Thing is directed by PCTC’s Artistic Director, Chad Swan-Badgero, and stars Los Angeles based artist, and Okemos native, Spencer Smith. This production is generously underwritten by Foster Swift Collins and Smith Law Firm, Sam & Mary Austin, and Frank & Katharine Dennis.

Alan Labovitz Celebration

1/10/2019

1/26 - (RSVP 1/20) Many of you have worked with Alan Labovitz over his many years in local theatre. The theatre community was a huge part of his life. Alan passed away November 30 after several years living with Alzheimer’s disease. While his passing was not unexpected, it still was sooner than expected, and very painful for the family.

Alan’s sons, Gabriel and Saul, and wife, Judy, are hosting a celebration of his life January 26 (which  would have been his 83rd birthday) 5-8 pm Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe, 1601 West Lake Lansing Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823

Judy invites all who knew Alan (with significant others) join this celebration. They are planning pizza, pasta, salads, beer, wine, soda.

Judy would appreciate knowing by January 20-21 how many folks might attend,  to be sure to have the right sized room and plenty of food. Please RSVP to Judy mailto:jslpotz40@gmail.com

Contributions in Alan's honor may be sent to Potter Park Zoo, Greater Lansing Food Bank, Alzheimer's Association, Sparrow Hospice, or the organization of one's choice. Donations to Riverwalk Theatre in Alan’s memory will be listed in programs for one year.
