Bud, Not Buddy brings author for talkback

3/30/2018

BUD, NOT BUDDY’ Performance to Benefit Literacy Program

Based on the Newberry Award winning book by Christopher Paul Curtis and adapted by Reginald Andre Jackson, Bud, Not Buddy is the story of Bud Caldwell (KaVares Luckett-Brown), a ten-year-old orphan growing up in Flint, Michigan. Bud flees the orphanage and foster homes and begins a journey across Michigan to find his father.

His only clues were left to him by his mother - a bag of stones, a special blanket, a childhood photograph of his mom, and fliers for an African-American jazz band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression.  With warmth and humor, and Bud’s “Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar out of Yourself”, Bud, Not Buddy will delight the whole family.

Veteran stage director Tom Ferris has assembled a young, talented cast of children and adults including: Guy Thomas, Jervon Milam, Nyla Crawford, Ralph Sims, Eric Jones, Amani Wheeler, James McCurtis III, Bryan Sanders, Kemar Williams, Julian VanDyke, Eric Smith, Janell Hall, Ellison Hall, Roshawndra Thomas, Drew Dungey, Chance Boyd, Danny Ferris, Lee Purdy, and Kamara Kahil.

*There will be a special April 20 fundraising performance to benefit Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), a leading voice for children’s literacy.  Author Christopher Paul Curtis will attend and will present a talkback after the performance. Tickets $20 for all ages for this show only.

3/29-31 - Mid Michigan Family Theatre presents
Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry adapted by Eric Coble
Thursday, March 29 - Saturday, March 31, 2018
Promptly at 7:00 p.n.

Mid Michigan Family Theatre
2/42 Community Center
2630 Bennett Road

About the show:
In an apocalyptic future where children are kept like animals and human life is cheap, young Kira learns the ugly truth about the powers controlling her world. A gifted weaver, her talent catches the attention of the Council of Guardians. Under their custody, Kira is made to mend and embellish the ceremonial Singer's Robe—a garment that tells the history of the world. But the longer she works, the more she learns about the horrifying secrets that keep her community hostage. Can she use her knowledge and art to reshape the future?

Based on Lois Lowry's companion piece to The Giver, Gathering Blue tells a suspenseful tale of the power of creativity to fight brutality.

Tickets available at the door each night.
$7.00 for adults; $5.00 for seniors and children

Lily Note

3/22/2018

This is not really a “review” since Jan Lockwood was kind enough to write one last weekend (find it under “reviews” at http://www.greaterlansingtheatre.net) but I am pleased to report Mark and I DID see Lily the Felon’s Daughter at Riverwalk - and found it the most fun show of these recent FULL weekends of more serious/challenging shows. Lily is a charming, sappy tale of lofty values and dastardly deeds, with some cute silliness thrown in.  (The intermission “demolition/yard-sale” set change is worth lingering for.) Director Sue Chmurynsky and her cast (and crew!) obviously had a good time, as did the audience.

Attendees of the second P.S.S.T. gathering enjoyed cheering and booing and hissing at the Lily cast's stylized antics. By the way, all those age 55+ are invited to the next Preshow Senior Second Thursday reception at 6pm before Bud, Not Buddy on April 26.

Lily continues at 8pm Fri/Sat and 2pm Sunday.

Movin' On Up

3/30-31 - Lansing Community College Performing Arts
An LCC theatre alumni production
Movin’ On Up

    By Jeremy Kehoe
    Directed by Heath Sartorius
8 p.m. March 30
2 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 31

Black Box Theatre
422 North Washington Square
Gannon Building 1422 - (enter at small door on south end of the building facing Grand Ave.)

Why would the Watchman (Jesse Frawley) who wears a watch that won’t work sit silent sentry in a graveyard and wordlessly wait, and wait, and wait? And what about Lewis (Michael Boxleitner), who shatters the serenity after stumbling from a slumber at the soles of the Watchman’s feet? Where does he think he’s heading? Nowhere fast, if the Watchman has his way. And then there’s Joan (Nicole Yabs) with the bandaged hands. What drew her to this dark corner of the universe? And, why does she keep insisting she knows everybody? It’s so annoying. Why won’t any of them move on? What in the world are they all waiting for?
This absurd, dark comedy made its debut at the 2016 New York International Fringe Festival.
