Tim sings at Lugnuts Thursday

5/29/2018

5/31 -Thursday, Tim Beam sings at Lugnuts Stadium

Tim reports:
One of My Bucket List Items is to sing the National Anthem to a Large Audience at a Sporting Event. And on this Day, I have been selected to accomplish this task at Oldsmobile/Cooley Law Stadium for the Home Game for the Lansing Lug Nuts. Being a Veteran, and a Traditionist I am honored to have been selected on The Real Day, rather than the convenience day. And I hope many of You will decide to show support for Our Local Farm Major League Team.

Some of You may wonder what Theatre and Base Ball have in common? And it's that We both support Lansing. Also, I am far from being the first Riverwalk Theatre Member to have been given this honor. So Please show up of You can.

On a personal note. Even though at this time, results are coming back really good on My Battle with Cancer, I plan to attend a Board Meeting to officially resign and offer to hand the reins of "Theatre Firearms Coordinator" over to My Son, William Timothy Beam. I will still assist Him as long as I can. We still have guns for Stage for any Play Project that needs them.

I hope Everyone has a wonderful Safe Memorial Day Weekend,

Lugnuts Ticket Office Phone Number is: 517-485-4500
May 31, Thursday - Game Time is 7:00 PM
Tickets range from $8 to $15 and can be purchased online.

Hurst/Olds needs characters

5/28/2018

The Hurst/Olds Club of Americais celebrating the 50th anniversary of the introduction of these cars by holding their 34th National Meet in Lansing, the hometown of Oldsmobile. A Hurst/Olds is an ultimate muscle car built by Oldsmobile in 10 select years from 1968-1988. The event is July 19-21, 2018.
The evening of Friday the 20th we will be at the R. E. Olds Museum for a "Night at the Museum." As in the movie.....after dark things will come alive in this case it will be characters. We are planning to have people representing the decades of Oldsmobile production as well as Mr. & Mrs. Olds. As an example there will be a flapper for the 20s-30s era; GI Joe and Rosie the Riveter for the 40s; Fonzie and a teeny bopper for the 50s, etc. This event will raise money for the museum by admissions and donations.

The reason we are contacting you is for help!We are looking for an actor and actress to portray 2 people that were instrumental in the advertising of these cars, Doc Watson and Linda Vaughn. Both of these people were very outgoing and "people persons!". Linda was a Marilyn Monroe type both in looks and sex-appeal (blond bombshells).
Each of our characters will have informational cards, similar to baseball trading cards, to hand out to visitors and will also be keeping an eye on the cars during the event from 6 pm -9 pm. We will also provide each character a few "key" phrases or information about the era they represent, in case questions are asked. Mostly it is just a meet and greet kind of thing.

At 6 pm we will provide pizza for the characters, before the arrival of the guests, and allow them time to get dressed. We expect to open the museum at 7 pm. Since this is a fundraiser for the museum we are hoping for volunteers. If that isn't possible, we could arrange for payment.

If you have any additional questions, I would be happy to talk with you.

Over the Ledge Theatre announces its SUMMER SEASON

July 5-8 & 12-15
THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES A musical comedy with a book by Roger Bean. Directed by Kelly Stuible-Clark. This smashing off-Broadway hit sends us to the 1958 Springfield High prom, where we meet The Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Watch the highs and lows the girls experience from prom night to their reunion on stage 10 years later. Including classic hits from the 50s and 60s like “It’s My Party,” “Goodnight Sweetheart,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” “For a certain generation – and all fanciers of the girl-group sound – this is an utter charm bomb.” New York Times

Aug. 2-5 & 9-12
NORMA & WANDAby Jeff Daniels. Directed by Adam Carlson. Two very different sisters get themselves into an outrageous pickle with an old high school boyfriend, a chaotic church social and a secret family recipe for Christmas sausage. “Norma and Wanda is wacky and farcical, with plenty of physical comedy and hilarious one-liners, but lurking behind the seemingly silly façade lies a universal truth you won’t expect.” Ann Arbor Observer

Sept. 6-9 & 13-16
DANCING AT LUGHNASA,by Brian Friel. Directed by Mary Job. Winner of Tony, Olivier and Drama Circle Critics’ awards for best play, DANCING AT LUGHNASA is the memory of 7 year old Michael Evans, told from the perspective of the adult Michael, about his mother and four aunts in the late summer of 1936 when three remarkable events occurred: his uncle Jack, a missionary priest, returned home after 25 years, he met his father, and, wonders of wonders, the Mundy sisters got a wireless radio! The adult Michael watches as his mother and aunts' search for and find the potential for love--only to lose it as the hardships of life and the limitations of small village mores contain them. A “ravishing memory play” that “carries its characters and audience aloft” The New York Times

Over the Ledge performs at the Ledges Playhouse in Fitzgerald Park.137 FItzgerald Park Drive Grand Ledge, MI 48837

Downeaster Needs Actor

5/26/2018

The Downeaster is in desperate need of a 20s male for the role of Danny in Ring Around Rosalie, a 1930s farce!

This funny, fast-paced farce begins in 1933, at the end of Prohibition. Benito “Benny” Bellarosa, a New York gangster, is attempting to make good on his promise to become a respectable business man. His rebellious daughter Rosalie leads her father to believe that she is “in the family way,” hoping he will allow her to leave the house and marry her boyfriend. Unfortunately Rosalie’s lover disappears and Benny is left with more suitors (and daughters) than he can handle. Mistaken identities abound as Benny contends with his frantic wife, bumbling henchmen and an ambitious accountant. With the bankers arriving any moment, Benny is desperate to find a suitable husband and get a ring around Rosalie! Written by Whitney Ryan Garrity.

We perform the last two weekends of June, with rehearsals 7-10pm Sunday-Thursday at The Downeaster Theatre, 1120 North Pennsylvania Ave. Lansing.

June GLUT Calendar & Summer Circle

5/23/2018

There is a LOT going on in June - not the least of which is MSU SUMMER CIRCLE (MSUSC) which is a wonderful outdoor free theatre program WELL WORTH REVISITING for those who may have written it off due to bad sound and bumpy terrain and too many mosquitoes. The new-ish courtyard location between the MSU Auditorium building and the Kresge Art Center is much more accessible for walking and hearing (mikes and sound system). And It’s even more wonderful this year, because hubby Mark and I are the community guest actors (a.k.a. the old people) he in Amour and I in Significant Other. Check out the website that explains the many “extras” such as the EnVie French restaurant deal, beach dance party, and more! Pack up your lawn chairs and join us!  More info at http://www.theatre.msu.edu/sct

Ixion Seeks Diverse Scripts

5/20/2018

At Ixion Ensemble, we have had a bit of volatility in selecting our opening show slot for the 2018-2019 season. Our first choice was slow-rolling the rights. So we went with Plan "B".

Now, there is nothing wrong with Plan "B", except we sacrificed gender diversity in choosing it. While no show can check all the boxes (nor should a script be chosen solely on those merits) we think we can be a bit better. And we are asking you to help us.

We are taking script suggestions through June 15.

The scripts should feature no more than four actors — at least one of which should be a role open to women over the age of 40.
Bonus points if the script is written by a woman and/or offers well-rounded roles for a diversity of actors.
Bonus bonus points if it has a science fiction theme.
(Please Note: Much like "Whose Line Is It Anyway" the points are a conceit and not a true scoring system.)

The show slot and director are still set. (Directed by O.G. Ueberroth; Performances September 8, 9, 15 & 16)
We are simply looking to the broad expertise of artists in the area to help us come up with a better answer.

We look forward to your suggestions.

Seeking Production Team for Noises Off

5/20/2018

Michael Hays, as director of the upcoming, hopefully-hilarious Riverwalk Theatre presentation of "Noises Off", is seeking to create a strong production team for the event. ALL positions are open at this time (see list below). Please do not eliminate yourself based on your inexperience, age, or any other factor; I find great reward in mentoring inexperienced personnel. Everyone is welcome to contact me regarding any position in which they are interested, at my email address: mailto:stage1actor@yahoo.com.

Just to give an overall idea of the timeframe, auditions will be held September 30, and October 1; opening night is November 29, and closing night (matinee) is December 9. Schedule conflicts in regards to Thanksgiving will not necessarily eliminate anyone. My hope is to have at least two production meetings before auditions take place.

The following positions are open:
--Assistant Director
--Stage Manager (and Assistant Stage Manager)
--Set Designer (and several Set Builders) NOTE: Riverwalk's "team" is requesting a set design no later than September 15; of course, earlier is better.)
--Lighting Designer (and at least one Light Board Operator)
--Sound Designer (and at least one Sound Controller)
--Costumer (who may also seek Costume Assistants)
--Properties Mistress/Master (who may also seek Properties Assistants)
--"Fight"/Movement Choreographer
--Hair Designer
--Dialect Coach
--Stage Crew
--Additional personnel, as needed
--(did I forget anything? Lol)

This production hopes to be one of the most side-splitting shows in recent Riverwalk history, maybe even the Lansing community, at large. I further hope to create a true "family" of individuals all seeking that same vision. Please think about being a part of the "Noises Off" family!!

EAST LANSING, MI.— The best of Michigan’s high school theatre students are coming together Sunday, May 20, at Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall for the 7th Annual Sutton Foster Ovation Awards. The award is a celebration of outstanding achievement and recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performances for both a male and female lead in a high school musical theatre production. It also honors the commitment of Michigan teachers and schools to excellence in performing arts education.

Forty-six high school thespians from across the state will compete on the Wharton Center stage for the coveted Sutton Foster Ovation Award. Of these select performers, one male and one female will be presented an Ovation Award by a prestigious panel including Broadway judges, and will go on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City on an all-expenses-paid trip this June. The winners will also each receive a scholarship to Wharton Center’s summer Broadway workshop, Take It From The Top, as well as $1,000 in cash.

Last year’s male winner, Antonio Cipriano, is making a name for himself in theatre.  He was recently cast in the Broadway-bound company of the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill.  Cipriano has also recorded an album, Never Gonna Be The Same. After the 2017 Ovation Awards, Cipriano said his goal was “to be a performer”; something he continues to accomplish since winning the award.

The May 20 event will include a selection of Broadway tunes and dances performed by the students, culminating in the final awards ceremony. Parking will be free in the ramp adjacent to Wharton Center.

This year’s participating schools include:

 Armada High School
Big Rapids High School
Brighton High School
Clarkston High School
Coopersville High School
Dewitt High School
Grand Rapids Christian High School

Oh Behave!

“Kinder Kids. Kinder World”
Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to welcome the NYC duo of Leah Gerstel and Megan MacKenzie Lawrence for our final show of the season, Oh, Behave with the Mannerhausens, an original musical crafted to teach young children the basics of kindness and good manners.

Zany British sisters Eddy & Kit Mannerhausen use family pearls of wisdom to teach kindness, social skills and manners in a hilarious one-of-a-kind way. Their interactive performance is filled with original songs and games that promote social awareness and celebrate kindness in everyday scenarios. Perfect for ages 5-10 and guaranteed fun for the whole family! Give your child the gift of "Manners for Life", and set them up for lasting success. As Eddy and Kit would say, “Kinder Kids. Kinder World”.

Peppermint Creek Co-Artistic Director, Chad Swan-Badgero, said, "Peppermint Creek has been searching for years for a show that was appropriate for young kids, but was still in line with our mission to address current issues through the theatre. At a time in our country’s history when it seems kindness is the LAST thing people think about when they interact with each other, Oh, Behave is the perfect show for us to bring to our community, especially young children.  And PCTC has developed a strong relationship with Leah Gerstel, co-creator of the show, who has been seen on our stage in Ordinary Days (2011) and Falsettos (2017).  We are so pleased to bring a show she helped create to Lansing audiences!”

There are only TWO performances of "Oh, Behave with the Mannerhausens" this weekend at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.  So order your tickets now!
