Mock Trial Acting Gig

1/23/2020

TRIAL PRACTICE ACTING GIG SPRING 2020!
Use your acting and improvisational skills, have fun, help students
and get paid at the same time!

RIVERWALK THEATRE and the MSU College of Law are looking for actors who are interested in playing the defendant, and witnesses in mock civil trials for the MSU College of Law Trial Practice Institute.  There are 4 trials, all using the same case study over 2 days. We are looking for a total of 10 actors --2 actors to play the defendant and 7 other actors to play the witnesses for both parties in all 4 trials.   There is a small stipend for the gig depending on the role and the number of trials in which you testify.

This semester’s case is a criminal case - State v. Baker. Summary: Sarah Baker, the daughter of a billionaire international arms dealer, has been charged with the first-degree murder of her husband, Kelly Baker, a well-known Nita City television news anchor at station KNTA-TV. On September 7, 2012, Sarah Baker shot her husband Kelly Baker in the kitchen of their large estate known as Ashgate Farm near Warrenton, Nita. Kelly Baker was found lying facedown on the floor. In her statement to the sheriff’s investigator, Sarah Baker said her husband had accused her of having a romantic relationship with Bradley McCormick, the chief deputy district attorney of Darrow County. She said that on the morning of September 7 she was in the kitchen just after 8:00 a.m. when her husband entered the kitchen and brandished a semiautomatic pistol and said that he was going to kill her for being unfaithful. She was able to convince him to put the gun on the table. Sarah Baker then said that she grabbed the gun to protect herself, and as soon as she did, Kelly Baker then grabbed a kitchen knife, screamed obscenities, and advanced toward her, threatening to kill her. She said he slashed her left arm with the knife. As he came after her, she fired to protect herself, shooting him four times. The State contends that Sarah Baker intended to divorce Kelly Baker and to cut him out of her will, and Kelly Baker told her he would bring legal action to seek a large portion of her estate. For that reason, the State claims, Sarah Baker decided to kill Kelly Baker and then attempted to cover up her crime by slashing her own left arm and planting a knife in Kelly Baker’s hand.

Help Ixion Theatre Geek Out

1/8/2020

You may have noticed that some of our shows are a bit geeky. You may have also noted that we've been such geeks that we've taken a show down to a gaming convention twice before. Well, we'd like to do that again. So, we've launched an Indiegogo campaign to take another show on the road in 2020.

This time instead of taking the geek battle to dragons or into space, we're facing the most fearsome battle of all, high school. We would like to take Qui Nguyen's Begets: Fall of a High School Ronin to GenCon in the summer. And to ensure that the effort doesn't deplete our resources for our regular seasons we have launched the campaign.

If you're curious, follow the link below to learn more.

Ixion Mission:
To build and strengthen community through storytelling. Become a gathering place for artists and community members to explore and celebrate the human experience.

GLORIA coming to Peppermint Creek

“GLORIA”
Peppermint Creek Theatre produces the Midwest premiere of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist

Lansing, MI – Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to announce the two-week run of the brutally funny new play, Gloria, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, which was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize.

Gloria is a funny, trenchant, and powerful play that follows an ambitious group of editorial assistants at a notorious Manhattan magazine, each of whom hopes for a starry life of letters and a book deal before they turn thirty. But when an ordinary humdrum workday becomes anything but, the stakes for who will get to tell their own story become higher than ever.

A finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, the New York Times called Gloria "[A] whip-smart satire of fear and loathing…GLORIA is to the New York publishing business what David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow is to the Hollywood film industry.” And the New York Post raved, “All you need to know is that the bitingly funny and fierce GLORIA is one of [2016’s] best shows. What playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins says about American society, the media and how we package celebrity and tragedy is as spot-on as it is depressing.” Gloria is a rare example of a contemporary play that keeps audiences constantly guessing where it’s headed and is not to be easily forgotten.

Peppermint Creek Guest Director, Ben Cassidy, speaks about what drew him to this new play, “Before I could even figure out what Gloria was about, the sharp dialogue hooked me. I had never read a script so modern, relevant, and FUNNY! When you finally realize what’s happening, the show takes an intense turn and pushes these already aggressive characters to another level.”

Cassidy continued, “With a script plush with topical conversations like the clashing of generations, race insensitivity, and how tragedy is presented in media – there is no doubt audiences will leave Gloria wanting to talk more about it.”

The production will take place at Peppermint Creek’s performance venue at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave, Lansing MI 48933. The show will run Thursday, January 16 - Sunday, January 19, and Thursday, January 23 – Sunday, January 26, 2020. Show times are (week one) Thursday and Friday at 8pm, Saturday and Sunday at 2pm; (week two) Thursday - Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets can be ordered online at www.peppermintcreek.org, and are $15 general admission, and $10 for students/seniors 65+/military.

This production is generously underwritten by Foster Swift Collins and Smith Law Firm, Sam & Mary Austin, and Karen and Jerry Jennings.
