Blue Light Postpones Matilda

Blue Light Players - Matilda Update

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way all of us are going about our lives. We are trying to adjust to the “new normal” brought about by the need to limit the spread of disease through social distancing. We must all help to “flatten the curve” and that includes making hard decisions about activities we have looked forward to for months. It is with heavy, but hopeful hearts, that we announce the postponement of the Blue Light Players’ 2020 production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical. With Michigan’s stay-at-home order extended through April 30, we are unable to perform Matilda as scheduled (April 23-26). It is not possible to provide the rescheduled dates for the production, as schools will be closed through the end of the academic year, and possibly all summer long for public events and performances like ours.
We want our cast, crew, and audience members to be safe, and postponing the show is the best way to do that. Those who had already purchased tickets to Matilda: The Musical have received a refund. We know that many people are struggling financially right now, and we wanted to return our patrons’ money in a timely manner. Rest assured that we do plan to reschedule our production, and we hope our patrons will purchase tickets at that time. We continue to rehearse online and we are providing no-cost educational opportunities to our cast members during this time of uncertainty. We hope to share some of our rehearsals and class projects with our audiences! Please continue to watch for us online.
We appreciate everyone’s support and regret that we had to make this decision. It was not made lightly. We are an organization that strives to give back to the community. With the coronavirus pandemic, our mission to support the families of law enforcement officers injured or killed in the line of duty has expanded to include officers who lose their lives to COVID-19. It is with great sadness that we announce we have already lost one Michigan officer in the line of duty due to COVID-19. Detroit Police Captain Jonathan Parnell’s End of Watch occurred on March 24, 2020.
Postponing our production means we will incur significant additional expenses and potential lost revenue. However, the board of directors has decided to personally cover those expenses so that the show may go on and the Blue Light Players may continue to give back to their community. We pride ourselves on being a community theater that exists to give back to the community. If you have questions about our organization, please visit our website at: www.bluelightplayers.com or send us an email at: bluelightplayers@gmail.com We cannot exist without the support of our patrons and the community in which we reside. Thank you for your continued patronage and we look forward to seeing you in a seat at an upcoming show at a time which is safer for everyone involved.

Peppermint concert/fundraiser until 4/25

YES - the Peppermint “Never Too Far From Home” concert was a heart-warming musical treat Saturday night — and still viewable (and donate-able) through April 25. Charming concert emcee and Peppermint Artistic Director Chad Badgero reports:

All of us at Peppermint Creek Theatre are still buzzing after the "Never Too Far From Home" musical fundraiser that brought PCTC alums together virtually for a musical concert to benefit the important and amazing work that Seam's Fabric in Lansing is doing for our community.  In just one month, Seam's has crafted over 12,000 masks to benefit organizations all across Lansing.  This is a list of some of the agencies who have benefitted from the cloth masks and hospital gowns Seam's and their volunteers are creating:

o   assisted living facilities
o   rehab clinics (including Origami Rehab)
o   Lansing Police Department
o   home healthcare providers
o   Community mental health
o   homeless shelters
o   the tri-county office on aging
o   various non-profits such as the Davies Project which transports immune compromised patients to their chemo therapy appointments
o   Allen Neighborhood center who plans to pass them out to people who come to their “Bread Basket food distribution
o   Sparrow and to McLaren Hospitals staff

So we can't THANK YOU enough for tuning in to our concert this past weekend and especially for donating! We had over 200 people watch the concert on Saturday, and of those viewers, 135 donated to raise a total of $6,030 to support Seam's! Wow! YOU made that happen and we are completed bowled over by your generosity.

We're continuing to collect donations through this Saturday April 25, so if you know someone that wants to contribute, please send them to our website: http://www.peppermintcreek.org/musical-fundraiser.html. And the video of the concert is still live on our Facebook page, so feel free to relive some of your favorite songs from the evening. https://www.facebook.com/peppermintcreek/videos/227076211715535/ We can't wait to present Seam's with a check that shows them just how much their work is appreciated!
At Peppermint Creek, our mission is to address current issues in our society while entertaining, and we are proud to have used this musical concert to address the current issue of COVID-19. We have never felt more proud of the work we do and the community we serve.  We hope you feel the same.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Chad

Bringing Theatre to Children - apply before Saturday!

My name is Emily Clark, and I am an MSU graduate and a Lansing arts and theatre regular. I wanted to reach out to you about a theatreopportunity for kidsthat I am working on:

An Afternoon of One Acts Workshop presented by OnLive Theatre.

OnLive Theatre is a partnership that I formed with two other MSU Theatre students, Taylor McPhail and Isabella Stenz, to bring theatre to children during times where our circumstances make it harder than ever to rehearse and perform. I was hoping that you could pass it along to the Greater Lansing Ubiquitous Theatre email list so that we can get more kids involved in performing and theatre throughout Michigan's stay-at-home order.

You can learn more about this workshop and about our most recent completed project, a 2-week online theatre workshop, on our website, which can be found here: https://onlivetheatre.wixsite.com/website. We have gotten great reviews from the parents and children involved, with many participants excitedly returning for this upcoming workshop. We have space for 22 more children ages 8+ across three one acts, and we are closing the application this Saturday, April 18th at 5:00pm.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you so much, and I appreciate your help! mailto:clark.emily.julia@gmail.com

Sincerely,
Emily Clark

(btw, this is NOT Emily English Clark, whom many of your know from local community theatre — tho I think she’d make a great teacher, too!)

More Theatres Coping with Covid

From Riverwalk Theatre:

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news we’re sure you knew would be coming: the Board of Directors has elected to cancel the remainder of our 31st season. You may already be aware that our friends at All-of-Us Express Children’s Theatre have cancelled their production The Fantastic Mr. Foxscheduled for our Rotary Main Stage this month. Because pre-production of Doubt: A Parablewas well underway before the impact of COVID-19, we have decided to postpone it until next season with the original cast and production team; it will replace Admissions. We will not be reschedulingA Hotel on Marvin Gardens,orShrek the Musicaland we will not be able to host our young artisan workshop this summer. Our hearts are broken for the many people who have already put in so much work on these productions.

We are fiercely hoping our upcoming season will not be impacted so far as to warrant the cancellation of productions. Therefore,in lieu of refunding the cost of individual tickets from your season package, we’ve extended the use for any remaining tickets this season for a similar show next season. When you choose to continue your seasonal subscription for Season 32, you can still use these remaining Season 31 tickets for friends and family. Example: Save your coupon for Shrek the Musicaland when you use your Season 32 ticket coupon to see Sweeney Todd, your second coupon can be used for a guest.

While we will be able to recover some of the money spent on production rights; we are still looking at aprojected loss of $14,300 in ticket sales. We use this revenue to pay our employees, light our lights, and insure our facility among many other things. As you may be aware,a necessary plumbing excavation and repair bill that could total $40,000 is adding to our expenses. We’re cutting back operational costs at every opportunity, but some expenses simply cannot be paused despite our inability to do business as usual.

Unwavering support from patrons, donors, members, and volunteers keep Riverwalk Theatre thriving in the best of times. However, these are not those times. If you truly find value in what we do,please consider adding your support as we continue to navigate through these challenging times. You can help by sharing how you've found a home with us, and why you continue to support us by renewing your membership, purchasing season ticket packages, and bringing your friends with you to our performances. If you're in a position to do so, please consider increasing your membership level and purchasing gift certificates for friends when we return....and we will return, with a little help from our friends.

From LCC

So sorry for those who have prepared auditions, but for a variety of reasons LCC has decided not to do a Musical in the fall. So auditions are cancelled. We will as always have many performance opportunities next year, and look forward to seeing you all as soon as possible.

Since LCC Summer classes will all be virtual, LCC has decided to cancel its “Summer Under the Stars” outdoor shows.

We got this from local Theatre Supporter (and Thespie mediator/article writer; YES, I think there will eventually be Thespie recognition of as much of the season as got onstage) MIKE HUGHES -  about an online way to sign a petition to include sexual orientation and gender identity in civil rights act:

Mike says: "There’s an important ballot petition that has been sidelined for a month by the coronavirus shutdown. Now things have been adjusted to allow people to sign it online.
The petition amends the 1976 civil rights act to include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. It’s extremely important to the LGBT community and to all the rest of us who want a fair and just society.
“You can read the full details, prior to signing it, when you go online. PLEASE do, if you’re a registered voter in Michigan and if you haven’t already sighed it. Go to
https://www.fairandequalmichigan.com/sign
“If you still prefer a paper petition, I’ll send you one. (To sign that, you’ll need a second registered voter to sign as the circulator.) Or call me to talk about it.
Thanks,
Mike Hughes

PS -- NOTE, when I clicked the link, it said "resource not
found" but it WAS the right site. If I clicked the title/header, it took me to the correct form to fill out for the petition.

Seams Fabric store has answered the call for cloth masks needed during the COVID-19 pandemic for the greater Lansing community by helping to coordinate the creation and distribution of donated supplies to volunteers in the Mid-Michigan area. As the supply of medical grade masks became scarce and the recommendation for everyone to wear a mask in public became a reality, an army of textile artists and sewers mobilized to produce hundreds and hundreds of masks. As of April 7, Seams Fabric volunteers have sewn 11,121 masks. Masks are being distributed to first responders, health care workers, hospital visitors, post office workers, food bank volunteers, essential workers, assisted living facilities, home healthcare workers and others throughout the greater Lansing area.

Heading up the local effort is Jessy Gregg, owner of Seams Fabric in East Lansing. Jessy has gathered, purchased and distributed cotton fabric, elastic, thread, bias tape, shoe laces, fabric cutters and buttons to the volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours constructing masks. As requests come in, the masks are packaged and delivered to the requesting organization. All at no charge!

Ixion, Lebowsky & MSU Theatres Respond to Covid 19

Ixion Theatre Ensemble:

It is with a heavy heart that Ixion's board of directors announces that the remainder of our 2019-20 season has been cancelled.

We look forward to resuming for the 2020-21 season. Watch for the season announcement.

Lebowsky Center in Owosso:

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has tested the very foundations of our faith, our economy, and even our community. The Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts knows that now is a very stressful time for many members of our community, and we are looking ahead to identify ways that our community can come back together to regain a sense of togetherness and normalcy – but only when it is smart and safe to do so.

Our Board and Staff have been working diligently to restructure our current season.  To that end, we are looking at alternative performance dates for Face to Face – Elton John/Billy Joel Tribute and Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. However, we do not want to release new performance dates until it is prudent to do so.  We have also made the difficult decision to cancel The Producers.  The Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts relies on more than 300 volunteers to run our performances; and we want to make sure that everyone in our community is willing and available, when the time is right, to come together to produce the caliber of show we are known for.

Even so, our patrons have the opportunity to request a refund without any questions asked; but you also have the opportunity to donate your tickets back as a tax deductible donation. As it stands now, Lebowsky Center could lose nearly $70,000 in ticket sales.
3 WAYS YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOW

1. KEEP YOUR TICKETS or DONATE THEM

We have been processing refunds since mid March.  This is our largest source of concern at this time. Please, consider keeping your tickets to rescheduled shows or donating your tickets back.  We intend to honor all current ticket holders with new dates to the shows they have chosen.
To donate the value of your tickets, you do not need to do anything. After the date of the performance has passed, we will process non-refunded tickets as donations.
If you would still like a refund, we ask that you complete the following form, and we will follow-up with you as soon as we are able. The current demand on the Box Office is overwhelming. Click here to request an account credit or refund

2. DON’T WAIT TO RENEW
In April and May, we rely on memberships and season Flex Pass sales to cover facility operating costs during the summer months. This year, it is more crucial than ever to have that support as early as possible.

Join or Renew you Membership
We promise an incredible 2020-2021 season, but we urge current season ticket holders to renew their Flex Passes as soon as our new season is announced.  Please don’t wait. Watch for more details coming soon.

3. DONATE WHAT YOU CAN
We know everyone is facing the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation, but every little bit helps.  Please consider a direct donation to The Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts today to support our mission.

The recently passed stimulus bill allows for a one-time, above-the-line deduction for cash contributions of up to $300 made to certain qualifying charities. All taxpayers would be eligible to take the deduction, even people who use the standard deduction. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year. The new deduction would not apply to noncash gifts or to gifts contributed to donor-advised funds.

MSU’s Summer Circle Theatre Season Postponed Until 2021, Online Activities Offered This Summer

The Michigan State University Department of Theatre’s 2020 Summer Circle Theatre (SCT) season has been postponed. The entire season will move to June 2021, but the Department of Theatre will offer some online activities for all to enjoy remotely this summer. This decision comes as a result of the announcement made by MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., to continue virtual-only courses for the summer session in response to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic.

Since 1960, the MSU Department of Theatre has heralded the unofficial start of summer with its Summer Circle Theatre program, which presents free, accessible theatre using the talents of MSU students and faculty, professional artists, and community members. Department of Theatre Chairperson Kirk Domer, SCT Artistic Director Rob Roznowski and the SCT Artistic Associates shared the news on April 3 with the undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty slated to work on the 60th season.

The decision to move the entire season to summer 2021, however, brings with it some positive news. Directors, actors, shop employees, stage managers, all will be offered the same roles next year if their schedules permit, including all graduating seniors and graduate students. Designers will complete their design process remotely this year and all designs for sets, costumes, props, light, and sound will be built or implemented in 2021. When complete, design renderings will be posted to each show’s webpage.

For stalwart fans of the annual festival, now in its 60th year, there still will be opportunities to enjoy some summer theatre fun, albeit remotely. The cast of “6”will record a reading of the script to be viewed from home. This kid-friendly show is a brand new, original script written by MSU Theatre students Brandon Drap, Taylor McPhail, and Mary Claire Zauel and MSU Head of Acting and Directing Rob Roznowski. In this body-switching comedy, which was written to celebrate Summer Circle Theatre’s 60th birthday, 6-year-old Georgina and her 66-year-old grandfather George become unexpected best friends.

The SCT Kids Camp  https://theatre.msu.edu/sct-kids/ a free summer camp for 1st through 6th grade students, also will release camp curriculum and activities developed by Director Ann Folino White for families to experience from home. The summer camp faculty and staff have been encouraged to create a video of a game or activity for families to access from the Summer Circle Theatre website. Audiences are encouraged to follow the Department of Theatre’s Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MI.State.Theatre/, Instagram https://www.instagram.com/msu_theatre/  or Twitter https://twitter.com/MI_StateTheatre feeds to receive alerts of all the SCT videos as they become available. In continuing with the 60-year tradition, all content will be free and open to the public.

See you at the circle!

This stuck-at-home time is perfect for exploring Matt Ottinger's amazing database of local theatre. “Search” your own name and/or your favorite shows to remember who WAS that guy who played such and such…

Lots of fun and memories and fuel for the belief that we WILL be back on stage, live, in front of live audiences before too long.

Kudos to Matt not only for his cherished videos, but also for caring enough about local theatre to maintain this database. Contact him if you have some old/rare local theatre programs he may not have documented or if you have additions/corrections to the info compiled.
