Harvey Cast/Crew Mourns Eve Davidson

4/25/2022

Little did we know when longtime theatre stalwart Eve Davidson was cast as Veta Louise in Starlight’s Harvey, that she wouldn’t be alive on opening night.

After experiencing some disorientation symptoms a couple weeks into rehearsals, Eve was replaced by me (the original Mrs. Chumley; A.D. Sue Chmurynsky took over my role.) Not long after, Eve was diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal brain tumor. She was at Sparrow waiting for a hospice bed to open up, under her “no feeding tube; no breathing tube” advance directive, when she experienced a “choking episode and her heart stopped” early Saturday morning.

There is no service planned at this time, but both Riverwalk and Starlight, where Eve performed often, would welcome donations in Eve's memory, that would be printed in their programs. www.starlightdinnertheatre.com , http://www.riverwalktheatre.com

So the cast/crew is carrying on, coping with our loss as well as the usual tech week chaos and coping with the new Grand Ledge High School stage.

So cross your fingers and say a prayer for our departed star, Eve — and hope to see you at Harvey, this weekend and next — details below:

Starlight Dinner Theatre brings ‘Harvey’, the Pulitzer Prize winning play about an invisible rabbit and his impact on human sanity, to the stage at Grand Ledge High School (April 29-30 and May 1 & 6-7).

The story centers on amiable but often quirky Elwood P. Dowd (Chris Klaver) who is driving his sister and niece crazy by introducing everyone he meets to his pal, ‘Harvey’, a six-foot rabbit that can be seen only by Elwood.  His sister, Veta (Jane Zussman), decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle May (Laura Croff) and friends from further embarrassment. Problems arise, however, when she explains to the doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see ‘Harvey’ as well.  That's when the real comedy begins.

‘Harvey’ premiered on Broadway November 1, 1944, and closed on January 15, 1949, after 1,775 performances, making it the fifth longest-running Broadway show at that point. The following year, ‘Harvey’ became a highly successful and Oscar-nominated Hollywood film that starred James Stewart. 'Harvey' is a production that Starlight Dinner Theatre founder, Linda Granger, has long-wanted to bring to the stage.

"I've wanted to include this show in one of our seasons but was never able to make it happen until now. It's a classic comedy that's as funny today as it was 70 years ago -- that tells you about the universal appeal it still has on audiences”, said Granger -- who is also the show's producer.

Director David Oswald has put together a talented cast of performers that also includes Bob Robinson, Mark Polzin, Stephanie Spagnuolo, Greg Pratt, Mark Zussman, Susan Chmurynsky Leonore Helder, and Gary Mitchell.

MSU Swashbuckling True Spy Story

MSU Department of Theatre Opens Swashbuckling True Story of French Spy

The Michigan State University Department of Theatre concludes its successful 2021-2022 season with Monsieur d’Éon is a Woman, a biting political comedy and sexy, swashbuckling romp that tells the true story of Charles d’Éon de Beaumont, an 18th century soldier, spy, and diplomat for the French courts of Louis XV and XVI. The production runs April 21–24 in the Pasant Theatre at Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Masks are optional but encouraged for audience members.

Charles d’Éon de Beaumont was a member of the King’s secret society, the elite Dragoons, a Freemason, and reputedly one of the best swordsmen in France. d’Éon lived 49 years
as a man and 33 as a woman and the mystery of d’Éon’s gender was the subject of great debate (and wagers) in London and Paris. Ever the expert at espionage, d’Éon kept the mystery alive, and it persists today. With guest appearances by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, King George III, the Marquis de Sade, and Madame de Pompadour, this play presents the heroic and tragic story of a complex and fascinating person.
“d’Éon herself is a historical example of the modern-day phenomenon of public figures being bombarded with questions regarding their dating lives and sexuality,” says student dramaturg and second-year Arts and Humanities major Abby Grantham. “This play offers a timely examination of our own judgment and questioning of others' gender identities and sexualities while also examining the political climate that still exists today.”
The opening night performance will include a post-show discussion on the evolution of the women warrior in early modern French literature with Valentina Denzel, Associate Professor
of French Literature in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University.

We saw this 60’s concert at the Grand Ledge Opera House and it is FAB, man! If you’re a 60’s cool cat relic like me, get yourself to Portland (not that far, and a charming old theatre building) and have some retro fun with this show!

Singers on the Grand presents "Yesterday: The 60s In Song” at the Portland Community Theater (231 Maple St. in Portland, MI) on Saturday April 23 at 7:00 pm. The 12 singers and 7 band members will take you on a musical journey through your favorite songs of the decade.

Coming off two sold-out shows in Grand Ledge, the group is excited to bring to Portland iconic 1960s music like songs from The Beatles, Motown, The Fifth Dimension, Sonny & Cher, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas and the Papas, and many other favorite performers. Includes full ensemble performances, solos, duets, and small group numbers. This high-energy show is filled with colorful costumes and other reminders of what made the 1960s memorable.

This will be the ensemble’s last performance of their 2021-2022 season and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Portland Civic Player’s marquee renovation project.

Tickets are $12, general admission seating. Tickets available online at https://portlandcivicplayers.com, or at the door.
