4/22- 5/1 - Owosso Community Players present Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite

4/16/2016

Classic comedy opens at the Lebowsky Center on April 22

OWOSSO, Mich.–– Owosso Community Players will present Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite this spring at the Lebowsky Center April 22 – 24 and April 29 – May 1. Audiences are bound to laugh during this portrait of three couples successively occupying Suite 719 at the Plaza Hotel.

Written by Tony Award winner Neil Simon, this wonderfully funny and classic comedy features a not-so-happy husband and wife, a man and his high school sweetheart, and a couple of worried parents sorting through their relationship issues.  Audiences will find comfort in the sense that the three distinctly different scenarios portrayed by these talented actors have been played out in their own lives.

“In each uncomfortable moment, the embrace of comedy makes the awkward seem reasonable,” says director Michael Windnagle. “On the surface, you'll be entertained—but with a little digging and attention, you'll leave with ammunition for a discussion that is bound to take place soon.”

No matter the type of theatergoer, all audiences are sure to enjoy Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite.

Simon is widely known as one of America’s most popular playwrights, with many of his plays exposing human weaknesses and making audiences laugh at themselves simultaneously. He has received more combined Oscar and Tony nominations than any other writer.

Plaza Suite is one of many Neil Simon shows OCP has performed over the years, along with Barefoot in the Park, Brighton Beach Memoirs and The Odd Couple.

“Obviously Neil Simon is brilliant, but what makes his shows so outstanding is the way they have you laughing all the way up to the poignant tears that are sure to come,” says Windnagle.

This show is full of strong leads with nearly all OCP veterans, save for a few newcomers. Cast members include Lyn Freeman as Karen, Artis White as Sam, Kelly Oginsky as both Jean and Mimsey, Quentin Brainerd as Jesse, Casey Voss as Murial, Timothy Ruwart as Roy, Connie Curran-Oesterle as Norma, and more.

Plaza Suite runs April 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m., and April 24 and May 1 at 3 p.m. at the Lebowsky Center in Owosso. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13.50 for seniors and students and $7.50 for children 13 and under. Tickets are available by calling 989.723.4003 or online atwww.owossoplayers.com/tickets. Plaza Suite is generously sponsored by Comstock Inn and Conference Center.

Arts or Crafts AND Gaps in the Fossil Record

OOPS - I’m a little late on this note from Janet Colson:

4/15-16-17 - I know highlighting High School shows isn't typical, but neither is Holt High School's spring play "Arts or Crafts" which runs this Friday and Saturday (April 15 and 16th) at 7:00 and Sunday the 17th at 2:00. This play was written by MSU's Rob Roznowski and a version of it was previously workshopped/performed at MSU. Arts or Crafts at Holt High School is directed by Seth Burk, and includes additional material by the cast.
5780 W Holt Rd, Holt, MI 48842

Also, even though it's a bit of a drive, The Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea Michigan is now showing the World Premiere of "Gaps in the Fossil Record" by Matt Letscher, which I have no doubt will be field-trip worthy. Some of our GLUT and Ripples Community may recognize "Gaps" from the staged reading at Riverwalk Theatre. The play is directed by Guy Sanville and features local actor Mark Colson in a leading role. With previews of the play this week and opening night Friday 22nd, the show runs through May 28th.

VOTE FOR RIVERWALK… or any other theatre of your choice!

I have my prejudices, being on the board, and wanting to continue my trade ad in the sym[hony program that brags about Riverwalk being a Top of the Town winner for seven years in a row — and I AM proud that Riverwalk balances quality with accessibility and sustainability in live community theatre. Yay Riverwalk!  Here’s the info/website:

We invite you, our readers and viewers, to let us know about your favorite people, places and businesses in Greater Lansing.
Like previous years, the contest is broken up into two rounds. In the first round, which runs from now until April 12, you can write in your own choices or choose people/places/businesses that have already been submitted. We started the contest this year by automatically adding the Top Five from the 2015 contest.

On May 4, we whittle the list down to the top five in each category, and those five will battle it out in a Final Five runoff contest until May 17. Nominees keep their votes from the first round. Winners are announced in the June 1 issue of City Pulse!

There are seven main categories and 123 subcategories. You must vote in at least 15 subcategories to have your votes count. You may spread your 15 votes through multiple main categories.

Winning a Top of the Town award is a major bragging right for locals, so be sure to support your top picks through both rounds.

“YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU’ COMES TO STARLIGHT THEATRE

4/12/2016

‘You Can't Take It With You’ is a whimsical Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway play that was transformed into an Academy Award winning film, and now it comes to Lansing’s Starlight Dinner Theatre (April 22 – May 1). This is the story of the zany and carefree Sycamore household, presided over by Grandpa Vanderhof (Ed Baker), other household characters include:  Penny Sycamore (Linda Granger), Grandpa's daughter and husband Paul (Jim Thorp), who makes firecrackers in his basement with the help of permanent houseguest Mr. DePinna (Tracey Dolinar); their daughter, Essie (Angela Dill), who imagines that she's a ballerina and her teacher, Kolenkhov (Leo Poroshin), and Essie's husband, Ed (Greg Pratt), who'd rather play a xylophone than work.  The one normal member of the household is Alice Sycamore (Rachel Mender), who is in love with wealthy Tony Kirby (Jeff Kennedy).

Naturally, when Tony’s stuffy and aristocratic parents (Dan Templin and Charlotte Ruppert) come to the Sycamores' for dinner, the event is a disaster, capped with the arrest of everyone in the household.  This production is highlighted with one madcap scene after another.  But in the end, after some careful self-examination and soul searching, everyone comes to the conclusion that you, indeed, ‘Can’t Take It With You’.

This iconic stage play is directed by Diana Lett.  The cast also includes: Susan DeRosa, Gail Dean, Dale Williams, Diane Kennedy, Steve Lett, Mike Ross and Gary Mitchell.

Dates:  April 22-23 and 29-30, and May 1, 2016.
Times: Fridays and Saturdays (dinner at 6:30 and show at 7:30), Sundays (dessert at 1:30 p.m. and show at 2 p.m).
Ticket Prices: $36 regular price, $33 for seniors/students, $15/$14 show only
Location: Waverly East Intermediate School 3131 W. Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48917

Funeral Guest event MOVED

4/10/2016

If any of you are planning to see THE FUNERAL GUEST movie at the Capital Film Fest tonight at 7pm, THE LOCATION HAS BEEN MOVED from Old Town’s Temple Club to the LANSING PUBLIC MEDIA CENTER 2500 South Washington, south of Mt. Hope, on the west side of the street.

We got this message from “Eventbrite” that sells the online tickets. (We had bought two, to make sure we got in, if it was sold out. I’m guessing they sold too many of those online tickets, and have moved to a bigger venue?) You may have read Mike Hughes’ articles in the State Journal about the Eyde family involvement in this film, AND my hubby Mark, Alan Labowitz and the late, great Addiann Hinds have bit parts, so…no WONder it’s popular!

Assuming $5 tickets will still be available at the door; see you there!
