Starlight Dinner Theatre: THE GARAGE SALE

2/28/2015

3/13-14-15 - And now for something well, not comPLETEly different, but a much smaller helping of funny and heart warming — served with a delicious dessert-only buffet at Starlight Dinner Theatre: THE GARAGE SALE has only two characters. I wrote this script, and am thrilled to see its “revival” 19 years after its first staging (with Linda Granger and Ron McNeill as doll and bear.) Now Linda directs the talented Angela Dill and Kris Klaver as they romp through this comedy of love and fear and loss and risk — literally and figuratively getting out of their box.
This is ONLY ONE WEEKEND, so I hope you won’t miss it — and don’t forget to pick up some treasures at the accompanying garage-sale fundraiser.
This production is rated PG - please inquire for further details if the PG rating is a concern. For further information email [email protected], call 517.243.6040 or go to the web site: StarlightDinnerTheatre. com.Facebook: www.facebook.com/StarlightDinnerTheatre

Here’s some sad news for those of us who worked with Bernie White, as we knew her, who worked with many theatre groups in the Lansing area.

Berna Dean “Bernie” Adams, 67, died in her beloved Petoskey on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015.
Bernie was born in Petoskey on April 7, 1947, to Malcolm B. and Lovina M. (Bauman) Adams. She graduated from Petoskey High School in 1965 and worked for a time at the Bell Telephone Company here.
As young people often do, Bernie moved away from her hometown, down to the Lansing area, where she married Roger White in 1973 (divorced, 1996). She lived in Mid-Michigan for more than 30 years, being a mom to her son, RJ, working at schools, and tirelessly volunteering for numerous community theater groups and the local PBS station.
After a brief period in Colorado, Bernie then moved back to Petoskey and was able to spend her last years surrounded by the friends and family that she loved so much.
Bernie is survived by brothers and sisters, Eltha (Richard) Florenski of Gaylord, Malcolm (Patricia) Adams Jr., Donna (John) Page, Mary (Randy) Handwerk and Susie Emmons, all of Petoskey, Dianna (David) Springett of South Haven and Duane Adams of Harbor Springs; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews; countless friends; and her son, RJ (Laura) White of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
A remembrance ceremony and scattering of Bernie’s ashes will take place in May at Greenwood Cemetery.

2/27-3/8 Little Dog Laughed Satire Comes To Riverwalk Black Box

2/26/2015

The Little Dog Laughed follows the adventures of Mitchell Green (Blake Bowen), a movie star who could hit big if it weren't for one teensy-weensy problem. His brash agent, Diane, (Deb Keller) can't seem to keep him ‘in the closet’. Trying to help him navigate Hollywood's choppy waters, the devilish Diane is doing all she can to keep Mitchell away from the cute rent boy Alex (Michael Boxleitner) who's caught his eye and the rent boy's girlfriend (Cassie Little).  Wait! The rent boy has a girlfriend?  Pour these characters and story line over ice and you’ve served up a shot glass of witty banner and risqué humor.

Directed by Michael Hays, The Little Dog Laughed is a show with strong language, and mature and sexual themes that may contain material not suitable for people under sixteen-years-old.  This show is a black box production.

February 27- March 1 and March 6-8, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.
$12 ($10 for seniors 55+ or students)482-5700www.riverwalktheare.com

Okemos, MI – February 23, 2015. The folly of the 21st century collides with the madness of Wonderland on March 13 – 22 at Happendance Studios in this rockin’ new musical adaptation that remains fairly faithful to Lewis Carroll’s original tale.

With all of the characters you know and love including the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts, this musical imagines a present-day Alice encountering the Wonderland so many of us treasure with a texting, tweeting, Googling Alice of the modern digital era.

This new adaptation features a contemporary score by the late beloved composer Bill Francouer (known for the children’s musical Oz!) and lyricist Scott DeTurk.

Show times on Fridays are at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and children 12 and under. Happendance Studios is located at 3448 Hagadorn Road in Okemos. Please enter  from the east side of the building.

Eaton Rapids, MI – February 23, 2015. Mid Michigan Family Theater is putting on a delightful new production of Kenneth Grahame’s popular The Wind in the Willows. The show runs on March 6 and 7 at the Eaton Rapids High School Auditorium.

Mr. Toad of Toad Hall is an eccentric but likable chap who frequently gets into "crazes."  His latest involves motorcars, which he unfortunately smashes up as fast as he gets them. This gets Mr. Toad into a lot of trouble.

Though his dear friends Badger, Rat and Mole do their best to help, Mr. Toad ends up in prison. Come see the hilarity that ensues in this enchanting show as the unforgettable Mr. Toad tries to find his way back home.

This simple stage production has an extremely flexible cast and many wonderful, small roles.

Show time is 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children 17 and under. A six ticket family package is $20.

3/25 - MUMMENSCHANZ

Part of the Doctors Company Variety Series at Wharton Center

Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.
Cobb Great Hall
Tickets:       From $40.00 ● plus applicable fees
Ticket Office: whartoncenter.com
517.432.2000 or 1.800.WHARTON

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The lines between art and physical space will be blurred as MUMMENSCHANZ takes the Wharton Center stage as part of their 40th anniversary tour. MUMMENSCHANZ comes to Wharton Center on Wednesday, March 25th, as part of the Doctors Company Variety Series at Wharton Center. Tickets to see MUMMENCHANZ are available at the official source to purchase Wharton Center tickets online, whartoncenter.com, at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office, and by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

The myth of MUMMENSCHANZ with its multi-faceted performance art pieces has traveled the world for over forty years and continues to shock audiences on an international scale. Whether it’s faces appearing in oversized paper, a transformative pile of shapes, taffy faces being stretched into new emotions, or using rolls of paper to display feeling, MUMMENSCHANZ has created an entirely new form of performance art that delights and surprises with each new act.

Hailing from Switzerland and founded in 1972, this mask theatre troupe has popularized the art of combining slight choreography and over-the-top, prop-focused productions. Their desire to find a suitable alternative to the classic mime, pantomime, and dance fueled the creation of this imaginative troupe, and their experimental work has created some of the most profound and sincere reactions in global audiences.

“MUMMENSCHANZ is far more than a name,” says MUMMENSCHANZ creator Hans Jorg Tobler…and the production proves just that. Their stories of silence become heightened through inventive and stunning visuals, and they use props such as color tubing and neon wires to portray humanity and the human experience in a tangible, physical way. Satisfy your cultural craving, and don’t miss out on this exceptional performance piece that will leave audiences stunned and hungry for more.

The Garage Sale coming to Starlight

2/21/2015

3/13-15 - Here’s the first of some probably-excessive promotion of my favorite old script, written over 20 years ago (and, oddly, more meaningful to me now, that it was when written) being revived at Starlight Dinner theatre for ONE WEEKEND ONLY March 13-14-15.
Lansing State Journal's review of the original production of "The Garage Sale" in 1996:
"Garage Sale is a remarkable mini-gem. It's just about perfect in everything - its writing, direction, performances and length...The action takes place on one table of a garage sale...Tuxedo Teddy has a lofty price tag and immaculate condition. He has spent most of his life on a shelf, encased in his original box. Rag Baby has lived big and shows it. She's a tattered mess, with great memories. These two manage to bond - quite literally, thanks to Zussman's clever ending. You could sum up the show in a cliche: It is better to have loved and lost (an arm, some stuffing, etc.) than to never have loved at all. Still, Garage Sale is more. It has moments of great heart and humor.” (Mike Hughes)
Make plans to see this heart-warming one-act production written by Jane Shipley Zussman at Starlight Dinner Theatre - on a Starlight "Lite" night - Dessert Buffet only - March 13, 14 & 15. We are making it real by holding our own garage sale in the dining area and inviting audience members to donate to the garage sale with slightly used items (no clothing please). Join us on March 13, 14 or 15 and watch Tuxedo Teddy (Chris Klaver) and Rag Baby (Angela Dill) come to life. This production is directed by Linda Granger and is rated PG - please inquire for further details if the PG rating is a concern.
