Do you know a 14-18-year-old who dreams of being on Broadway? Wharton Center is proud to welcome Paul Canaan and his non-profit arts organization, Take It From The Top, back to the Pasant Theatre on January 19, 2019, for a special collaboration with ANASTASIA, and we invite students to be a part.

The collaboration is a day-long immersion in Broadway production! In the morning, associate choreographer for ANASTASIA on Broadway, Adam Cates, with the help of some touring cast members* will work alongside students in master class sessions structured to improve singing, dancing, and acting skills and utilizing material straight from ANASTASIA. In the afternoon, students will watch this top-notch touring Broadway production and engage in a talkback session with the cast to discover what it is like to be a professional actor on a major national tour.

To maintain an atmosphere of direct mentoring with the professionals, class enrollment will be limited to 60 students, ranging from 14-18 years old. Registration for this extraordinary educational experience will go live at www.whartoncenter.com/tiftt on November 27 and will close January 3, 2019. Please contact Kelly Stuible-Clark for further information at [email protected] or 517-884-3166.

Wild Party comes to Peppermint

_____________________

Peppermint Creek Regional Premiere
The Wild Party

with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa
Directed by Ben Cassidy, music direction by John Dale Smith, choreography by Karyn Perry

Based on Joseph Moncure March's 1928 narrative poem of the same name, this darkly brilliant musical features one of the most exciting, pulse-racing scores ever written.

Lovers Queenie and Burrs decide to throw the party-to-end-all-parties in their Manhattan apartment. After the colorful arrival of a slew of guests living life on the edge, Queenie's wandering eyes land on a striking man named Black. As the decadence is reaching a climax, so is Burrs' jealousy, which erupts and sends him into a violent rage. Gun in hand and inhibitions abandoned, Burrs turns on Queenie and Black. The gun gets fired, but who's been shot?

A steamy prohibition tale, steamrolling and roaring its way across the stage, Andrew Lippa's Wild Party was an Off-Broadway gem that garnered an array of industry accolades, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards. Rated "R" for language and adult situations.

MSU Improv Show new every performance!

Freshman Showcase 2018 Improv

Join our wonderful new MSU freshman class as they take audience suggestions to improvise a new show every time. For each performance the characters, setting, dialogue, music and lyrics are all made up on the spot. The performers will be improvising short-form scenes, songs, and games in the style of the hit TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” The twist - our improvisers won’t be competing against each other for points, they will be working together as an ensemble to make their audiences laugh their faces off.

The full cast of 29 performers have been divided into smaller groups performing different shows so everyone gets ample stage time. No group performs together more than once, and every show will be completely different from the rest. Essentially, every performance is the opening and closing night (or afternoon) of that show, so you should probably plan to attend all of them.

Freshman Showcase runs from November 29 to December 2 at the MSU Auditorium’s Studio 60 Theatre. Tickets are available here:https://www.whartoncenter.com/events/detail/dot-freshman-showcase-2018

First time ever: a Greater Lansing Ubiquitous Theatre experiment!

Since NOISES OFF s a true “theatre-people” show, I am hosting a:

GLUT PRESHOW POTLUCK for NOISES OFF
7pm Friday, November 30 (show starts at 8)
Riverwalk Theatre

BRING: - finger foods - hors d’oeuvres, fruit, cheese & crackers, cookies, nuts, snacks...
and/or Fruit Juice and/or Pop (lemon lime/gingerale...?) for the Mystery Punch.
MAKE RESERVATIONS!
Note that there are 944 of you on the GLUT list! And there are only 247 seats at Riverwalk Theatre!
Reserve your seat by phoning 517-482-5700 - or making reservations online at https://www.riverwalktheatre.com/box-office.html

This is a great opportunity to socialize and snack with our fellow theatre people before (and during the two intermissions!) at Michael Hays’s wild and wacky production of this beloved backstage farce — a comedy about putting on a comedy which devolves into a festival of mishaps.

See you there!

SPECIAL EVENT!! 7 pm Saturday at Riverwalk’s Black Box stage
(Sorry, I got the time wrong on the November Ripples page-1 calendar, but I got it right on the page-2 article.)

SEVEN pm Saturday, November 17 - one night only
Staged Reading of
PARTY LINES by Cary Pepper  Directed by Bob Robinson

Did you enjoy "Party Favors" at this year's Renegade Festival? That was only a part of the story! Those same talented actors are back to let us know how it all turned out.

Independent candidate Malcolm Wilkes is trailing the incumbent by only 80%. No one’s ever done this well before. This fact brings a major party’s representative to Malcolm’s sparse headquarters with an offer of “help.” But Malcolm has sworn never to take party support. What does he do now?
For one night only —and at no cost— come see the full length play Party Lines, performed as a staged reading. Featuring Cassie Little, Chris Goeckel, Erin Barger, and Greg Pratt. Free of charge, though donations are welcomed at the door.

MEN IN BOATS floats into MSU’s Studio 60

In May 1869, ten skilled yet misfit adventurers set off to chart the Green and Colorado Rivers on the first official government-sponsored expedition of the Grand Canyon. Men on Boats (re)imagines the exploits of Major John Wesley Powell and his crew, offering a very contemporary perspective on the history of male conquest and westward expansion.

Taking her inspiration from Powell’s actual journals, playwright Jaclyn Backhaus throws gender, historical and theatrical expectations overboard. Performed with a wink by a racially and gender diverse cast, the play takes audiences on a raucous ride down the rapids to remind us that how we represent the past impacts how we will be inspired to make history in the future.

SEXUAL POLITICS - Arena Theatre

11/11-12 - The MSU Department of Theatre is proud to present a unique and timely experience with THE SEXUAL POLITICS SERIES, under Artistic Direction from Alexis Black and Assistant Direction from Philip Effiong. This performance of published and ensemble-created works explores how theatre, as an art form, has illuminated, illustrated and even misrepresented issues of discrimination, empowerment and abuse on several levels. Altogether moving, thought-provoking and sometimes humorous, the exploration of these complex issues is brought to the Arena Theatre on November 11th and 12th.

A major focus of the performance will subsequently be on strengthening community and communication, with interactive post-show discussions led by Professors Black and Effiong alongside campus community leaders with experience in supporting and advocating for safety and survivors. Audience members should note that in order to address these topics in a meaningful way, the show will cover subject matter that includes stalking, gender-based violence, non-consent, homophobia, and more. With an understanding that these depictions may trigger unwanted reactions, safe space facilitators will be available throughout the show for assistance.

Run time is approximately 80 minutes, followed by a post-show discussion of 20-30 minutes.
