West Side Story, Downtown, Outdoors

Starlight Theatre brings WEST SIDE STORY to the streets of Lansing
In partnership with Downtown Lansing Incorporated, and with the support of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, administered by Arts Council of Lansing, Inc. Starlight Theatre brings the ground-breaking musical 'West Side Story' to the streets of downtown Lansing on June 24-26.

Set in New York City, 'West Side Story' follows the Jets — a mostly American street gang led by Riff (Dale Wayne Williams) — in their racist-fueled hatred against the Sharks — a Puerto Rican gang led by Bernardo (J.J. Sanchez). They plan to fight in a bid to take control of the neighborhood, but their feud is complicated when Tony (Alexander Cousins), a former member of the Jets and Maria (Kayal Muthuraman) Bernardo’s sister, meet and fall in love. But while the two young people are discovering romance, tension builds between their friends and family that leads toward tragedy. The hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist without violence. Under that deep contempt, a climactic rumble is unavoidable.

West Side Story opened on Broadway in 1957 (with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) and ran for 732 performances.  It won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.  A 1961 film version won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.  It was recently revived into a more modernized 2021 Steven-Spielberg-directed movie.

This production is produced by Susan DeRosa and directed by Linda Granger, who has assembled a cast of veterans and newcomers to the Lansing stage (*cast listed below).  Other lead cast members include: Tianna Leon (Anita), Hannah Roman (Anybodys), Jose Onofre (Chino), David Sincox (Doc), Bobby McCleery (Krupke), Rick Wendorf (Lt. Schrank), Bob Murrell (Gladhand) and Rachel Mender (Somewhere Soloist).  Jeff English is the music director and Lori Arendsen is the choreographer.

*Jets:  Sage Chick, Edward Heldt, Miles Nowlin, Thomas Rivet, Seth Enos, Elizabeth Rodeck, Seth Chester, Katrina Granger, Helen Fortin, Kali Langschwager
*Sharks: Nicole Buchmann, Maribeth Robinson, Carlos Lenz, Sophia Lucero, Rachel Lucero, Emilio Pido, Katherine Dike, Marina Threadgould, Cuauhtemoc Vargas, Tim Edinger.

Traditionally a dinner theatre, Starlight is not providing dinner in this outdoor venue, but is hoping theatergoers will patronize restaurants near the performance area that have offered to stay open until show time at 8:30. Check Starlight’s website for additional information on restaurants that will be open.

Dates: June 24-26, 2022  Monday, June 27th is a Rain Date
Times:  8:30 pm for all 3 performances
Location:  Wolverine Parking Lot, 316 S. Grand Ave, Lansing

Rotten 2nd Weekend Postponed

Something Rotten Has Been Postponed for this Weekend

Lebowsky Center regrets to announce the postponement of Something Rotten for the remaining three performances, June 16 - 18. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of artists, staff, volunteers and patrons, they are taking this necessary to keep everyone safe after several positive test results from members of the cast.

They have RESCHEDULED these three performances for July 8 - 10.

Those who have already purchased tickets have received an email with details on a newly assigned performance date — and other options if they cannot attend for one of the rescheduled performances.

Jane says: This is a super-fantastic production; make reservations ASAP. I’m told the online ticket sales for July 8-10 performances should be online Monday.

MSU Summer Circle is Back

6/9/2022

MSU Summer Circle is back!

After a two-year hiatus, Summer Circle Theatre (SCT) at Michigan State University is back for its 60th anniversary celebration of FREE outdoor theatre for mid-Michigan audiences and a free week-long theatre camp for kids. This season will include four full productions and runs from June 9 through June 26.

The season opens on June 9 with the classic musical, Pippin, by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. In this “acoustic” production, the storytelling is the “magic to do” in Stephen Schwartz’s masterpiece about a prince searching for his purpose. Directed by Rob Roznowski, with music direction by Dave Wendelberger, this show is appropriate for all ages. Performances are June 9, 10, and 11 at 8 p.m. and June 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Distracted by Lisa Loomer is the second show of the summer. In this funny and poignant play, 9-year-old Jesse’s mama is in search of answers as to why her high-energy, creative kid is unable to concentrate at school. Directed by Ryan Welsh, this show is appropriate for ages 13 and up for profanity and adult themes. Performances are June 16, 17, and 18 at 8 p.m. and June 19 at 6:30 p.m.
The evening of June 17 kicks off the four performances of the SCT 2022 Late Night production of White Rabbit Red Rabbit. An actor will be given the script at the time of the performance with no rehearsal and no preparation, as Iranian playwright, Nassim Soleimanpour, examines his status as a censored writer. This show has adult themes. Performances are June 17, 18, 24, and 25 at 10 p.m.

SCT 2022 closes its run with the comedy The Play That Goes Wrong by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. This 1920s whodunit has accident-prone thespians battling against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call. Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, it is guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter. Directed by Brad Willcuts, this show is appropriate for all ages. Performances are June 23, 24, and 25 at 8 p.m. and June 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The SCT Kids Camp also will return this summer with support from a City of East Lansing Cultural Arts Grant. Using the theme of “Together with Friends” campers will perform stories, scenes, and songs that focus on how differences enhance friendships, culminating with a performance on Friday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. This week-long, free kids camp is dedicated to increasing access to theatre arts education for 1st – 6th graders, particularly those who identify as financially or otherwise disadvantaged.
As the Department of Theatre’s longest running and largest outreach endeavor, Summer Circle Theatre performances are free and open to the public. It is a professional theatre that pays its company by depending on the generosity of individual and corporate donors, in addition to some university funding. Community members and businesses can help keep Summer Circle Theatre free for everyone by visiting theatre.msu.edu/donate to give.

This 60-year community tradition continues in 2022 thanks to the generous financial contributions of Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, the Rotary Club of East Lansing, Hude Legal Services PLLC, the Michigan State University College of Arts & Letters, and individual donors.
The Summer Circle Courtyard has a tiered, amphitheater-style seating area, but patrons are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for personal comfort. Free parking is available just across the street from the Auditorium building. Audiences can bring their own picnic or visit our concessions stand. In the event of rain, performances will be moved to the Auditorium.

For complete and up-to-date event details, visit the Sumer Circle Theatre web page.

For Dick Hill and Susie Breck fans

6/2/2022

Dick Hill and Susie Breck fans can listen to Tom Heideman’s Belter Radio show, including a tribute to Dick, honoring his local theatre history and his hospice experience including songs from the original musical, BOOMERS, sung by Dick and Susie at:

https://www.mixcloud.com/tom-heideman/tunes-with-tom-on-belter-radio-tuesday-may-31-2022/?utm_source=notification&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=notification_new_upload&utm_content=html

This Dick Hill tribute radio show is one of a weekly series by Tom, usually on Saturdays. You can “search” for "Tunes with Tom on Belter Radio” at Mixcloud.com to listen to past shows by Tom, with gracious co-host Mary Koenigsknecht. He has cool taste in a variety of music, (and some great  “originals” too!)

Dick and Susie fans are also reminded of the open house this Saturday, noon to 4, to see his ART-filled home, though he won’t be present, too taxing to be “social” for that length of time.
