12/5 - Friends of Theatre Event Celebrating New Summer Circle Site

11/27/2013

All proceeds will support the new Summer Circle, which will be on the courtyard between Kresge and Fairchild. We have a lot to raise to get it going for 2014 -- but with your help we can do it! Please feel free to use all or part -- and thanks so much for any help you can give us.

Glass artist Craig Mitchell Smith will demonstrate his skills in art glass and support the Michigan State University Friends of Theatre in a special fundraising event held at Mitchell’s Meridian Mall studio. “A Magical Evening with Craig Mitchell Smith” will take place Thursday, December 5, from 7-9:30 p.m.
Smith will create a unique piece of glass that evening in his demonstration that will be raffled off during the event. In addition, the artist will donate 10 percent of sales to the Friends of Theatre.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Friends’ commitment to raise $100,000 for the new performance space for Summer Circle Theatre, a free summer festival held each June on the MSU campus. The new stage will be located on the courtyard between Fairchild Theatre and Kresge Art Center, near Summer Circle’s original Red Cedar location.

Event tickets are $30 each and advance reservations are required by Tuesday, December 3. Reservations can be made by calling (517) 355-6691. For additional information, email odelldio@msu.edu. Credit cards are accepted.

About Craig Mitchell Smith

Artist Craig Mitchell Smith is a Lansing, Michigan native. Strongly influenced by nature in his work, he has been keenly aware of nature from his childhood, with his first painting depicting a lily. While engaged in a career in theatre design, he owned a flower store and worked in such areas as wedding planning and interior design. He returned to Lansing, continuing his work in set design. After taking a class in fused glass, he realized the process came easily to him and that he could “paint with glass.”

After renovating his Frank Lloyd Wright-style home, he was contacted by HGTV. His glass work was featured on television and he began his career as a glass artist in earnest. His work has been seen throughout Lansing in venues that include Michigan State University and Cooley Law School Gardens, as well as Dow Gardens, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, Disney Epcot Center, Orlando International Airport and more.

TORI SAVES CHRISTMAS

11/23/2013

12/6-7 Fun and Entertainment for a Good Cause! (Choose to attend the "wild side" and/or the "family side" of this 24-hour event.)

TORI SAVES CHRISTMAS in memory of a life cut short, this event will raise donations to purchase gifts for foster kids at Christmas. We are once again partnering with Child and Family Charities to make the holidays a little bit brighter for children in foster care in our community.

Tori Saves Christmas is a 24 hour marathon of performances from 9pm Friday December 6 until 8pm Saturday December 7 at
The Avenue Cafe
2021 E Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI

Entertainment will feature improv, independent film, short plays, story telling, karaoke, trivia and more. Not your cup of tea, just wait thirty minutes and something completely different is likely to happen. We currently have a dozen musical acts, films from this year's Capital City Film Festival, Improvisation by professional actors and local favorites, Rico Bruce Wade & Aral Gribble and a whole lot more.

We open Friday the 6th with improv by both professional actors and the Laingsburg Drama Club. Then we go into a musical set followed by local stand up artists until 2 a.m. After that we get really wild with a Drag Pageant featuring regional performers.

The first half of the event is titled Dark Hearts Big Hearts as the language could be a bit more risque. But then from 7 am on the event is targeted for kids and familiies starting with storytelling, kids songs and a little bit about Beatrix Potter in the morning. Then music through the lunch hour and on to karaoke for kids throughout the afternoon.

Then we challenge people's minds with a bit of trivia, dive into more music and then we are in the home stretch and anything goes.

Okemos High School presents the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life”

11/23/2013

Performances December 5, 6, & 7 at 7:30 pm and December 8 at 2:30 pm
Okemos High School Theater, 2800 Jolly Road in Okemos

Tickets are available online at www.okemosdrama.net or at the door ($5 Students and Senior Citizens, $10 Adults).

In our American culture “It's a Wonderful Life” has become almost as familiar as Dickens' “A Christmas Carol.” Okemos High School presents “It’s A Wonderful Life”, a play based on the film by John Capra and adapted by James W. Rogers.  The story is a natural for a stage adaptation: the saga of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been quashed by family obligation and civic duty, whose guardian angel has to descent on Christmas Eve to save him from despair and to remind him by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born that his has been, after all, a wonderful life. With 60 Okemos High School students in the cast and crew, the show is directed by Mr. Chad DeKatch with Technical Director Mr. Brian Ugorowski.

A day of music, memories and play for Barb Milstein

11/19/2013

For those who knew our dear, departed, longtime theatre supporter, Barb Milstein:
11/24 - Join us for a day of music, memories and play!  NOVEMBER 24 1-3PM to celebrate and recall our mother, BARB  MILSTEIN and her enormous lust for life!
-----join us in person, or in thought---

Please accept this invite first and foremostly as a THANK YOU for being a part of our Mother's life, for surely her friends, community, relatives and family kept her laughing, engaged, included and taken care of every day of her life. What with the recent memorial for our father- alongside this busy holiday season, we more than understand and appreciate it may not be possible for you to attend  our November 24 "tea-party".

Indeed, even the short notice is perhaps as my mother would have wanted it, so as to make it more of a "feisty autumn gathering of good friends for a bit of music and lite refreshment" rather than a traditional large memorial. So, if you are able to attend, fantastic, please see details below, and if not, please do have a warm  memory of her on Sunday- from where ever you are.

Most of all however, we want to  thank you again for being a part of her life and ours.

With gratitude and the hopes for your own days  to be as full of sensation, beauty and life-as hers was-
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Rachel York will perform an extraordinary night of dancing, singing and comedy.

This Drama Desk award winner can do it all! Her debut solo album, Let’s Fall in Love, has been an enormous success since its release in 2005 and was named one of the Top Ten Vocal CDs of the year by Talkin’ Broadway.
