Askew, Askance, A Squirrel

2/25/2017

3/18 - 26 - Ixion is pleased to present the world premier of two one act plays by Lisa Konoplisky.

SAL-9000 and Nebraska Rapture will make their debut in the show titled Askew Askance A Squirrel!: An Evening in Lisa Konoplisky's World.  Performances are March 18, 19, 25 & 26 in The Robin Theatre 1105 S. Washington Ave. Lansing, MI. Performances are at 8 pm on Saturdays and 7 pm on Sundays. Tickets are $15 at the door or via eventbrite.com. For more information call 517.775.4246 or email ixionensemble@gmail.com.

Nebraska Rapture is directed by Sadonna Croff  and features: Jamie Schnepp, Monica Tanner, Danica O'Neill and Nick Lemmer.

Billie Lou Riddle is worried about Toby, her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that looks remarkably like a guy made to look like a dog. She wants to make sure there is someone to take care of him after she is gone. Emily Marks assumes that Billie's planning a trip, but quickly learns that Billie is planning a longer departure "as foretold". Emily is a perfect candidate to care for the pooch, because she and he won't be going anywhere after the rapture.

SAL-9000 is directed by Nicole Clyne, who is making her Ixion directing debut, and features: Monica Tanner, Nick Lemmer, Angharad McGauhey and Tracey Dolinar.

Jill is uncertain about her new gift, the SAL-9000. She isn't sure she can trust a sentient washer/dryer, all purpose service machine. But Jill has been hurt and in spite of the SAL-9000 lacking a delicate cycle, finds herself becoming emotionally attached.

"I can't wait to see what the directors and cast do with these fun scripts," says jeff croff, Ixion Artistic Director. "Not only does this continue our season of all new works, it allows us to work with another old friend. I first worked with Lisa when we did another one act play she wrote called White Elephant. Her off-kilter and unique thoughts which range from a six foot tall lesbian, gun-toting parrot to a sentient washing machine always make me laugh."

Lisa Konoplisky is a Wisconsin-based writer, playwright and screenwriter. Her work has been performed across the the country. She will be attending the performance on March 25 and will participate in a talk back that evening immediately after the show.

Oliver! presented by Blue Light Players

2/18/2017

2/24-3/4 - The Blue Light Players are proud to announce their upcoming production of the musical Oliver! This family-friendly classic is a musical based on the Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist. The musical originated on stage in London’s West End in 1960, and was quickly followed by a long-standing run on Broadway. In 1968, Oliver was made into a very popular movie musical. Since the original production in 1960, there have been numerous revival productions and National tours. Audience members are sure to recognize Oliver’s well known songs, such as: “Where is Love”, “Food, Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself”, and “Reviewing the Situation”.

The Blue Light Players production of Oliver, features a cast of 30 adults and youth from the greater Lansing area. The title role of Oliver, is being played by Waverly High School Freshman, Samantha Stanton. In preparation for this role, Samantha recently cut off 12 inches of her hair, and preserved it for donation. The rest of the cast is comprised of both Lansing stage veterans and newcomers. Some familiar names may be: Mike Stewart (Fagin), Philip Franke (Artful Dodger), Suzanne MacLaren (Widow Corney) and James Geer (Bumble). The cast also includes 12 youth members, who attend schools in Waverly, Grand Ledge, Holt, Ovid, and Lansing. The production is directed by Helen Hart and Dan Southwell, with music direction by Mary Rodeck, and lighting design by Mike Stewart. Of course, we would be no where without our Stage Manager, Jenna Erbele, and our House/Lighting Manager, Justin Brewer.
Performances of Oliver will take place on February 24-25 and March 3-4 at 7pm in the Albert A. White auditorium in East Lansing. Tickets may be purchased online at: http://www.bluelightplayers.com/oliver.html or by calling our box office at: 517-490-4567. Questions may also be directed to our email address at: bluelightplayers@gmail.com
All seating is reserved, and advanced purchase is recommended. However, tickets will also be available at the door. So, we hope you will be “reviewing the situation” and be in the audience on one of our 4 performance nights. We know you will “consider yourself at home” if you decide to join us for an evening of family-friendly entertainment, performed by your friends and neighbors from the greater Lansing community.

NOTE: The director has informed me that HATE MAIL starts at 8pm, despite the "7-10 pm" on the UrbanBeat website. (That is probably the entire time the place is rented for...?) So don't be TOO early for this exciting new show by Generations Theatre at UrbanBeat (in Old Town, across from the Creole.)
Hate Mail only runs about an hour and a half, and starts at 8pm tomorrow, Saturday, and also next Friday/Saturday the 24th and 25th.

Among the Darkest Shadows

2/17/2017

I did not send this out before, because I try to draw the line at "dance" and stick to "theatre." I already feel like I'm bombarding you all with "too much" (hence the GLUT, as an acronym and as an actuality.) But of course, dance and theatre overlap. ANYway, theatre aficionado Karen Grannemann sent the following high recommendation not to miss the ONE MORE SHOW of Among the Darkest Shadows on Sunday at 1pm.

"After attending last night's performance of Among the Darkest Shadows, I am compelled to send this note strongly recommending that you make every effort to witness this incredible work of art. I must confess that I was a little wary as to how a topic like human trafficking could be handled through dance, but it is the most beautiful, sensitive, and moving work I have ever seen, on a topic that receives far too little coverage. My husband and I were blown away. If you have no plans for Sunday afternoon, I urge you to consider going. It will make you even more proud of Wharton and its visionary leadership in the arts. Kudos to Bert Goldstein and the entire Wharton team." - Karen Grannemann

INLET DANCE THEATRE presents Among The Darkest Shadows

Tickets from $19.50

Wharton Center has commissioned a new dance and theatre piece with INLET DANCE THEATRE of Cleveland and playwright José Cruz González. Part of Wharton Center’s Dance Series, this exciting new work will debut on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. and will be performed again on Sunday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pasant Theatre. Tickets are available at the official source to purchase Wharton Center tickets online, whartoncenter.com, at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800- WHARTON.

INLET DANCE THEATRE is one of the country’s most exciting professional contemporary dance companies. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, this company utilizes the art form of dance to bring about personal development in the lives of individuals through training and mentoring, and to speak creatively about life and the issues we all face.

Among the Darkest Shadows tells the poignant stories of Lodi, a young victim of labor trafficking, and Pinta, a victim of sex trafficking. Written by California-based playwright José Cruz González, this powerful new story follows Lodi and Pinta’s harrowing journey through contemporary enslavement and their struggle to be free. The story is told largely through innovative dance portraying the magical realism of Mr. González’s writing, featuring his signature style of larger-than-life characters, bold visuals, poetic images, and striking symbolism. You will not want to miss this incredible new work.

There will be an Insight Preview and After Chat at each performance. The Insight Previews will be held at 6:45 p.m. for the Thursday performance and 12:15 p.m. for the Sunday performance, in the Jackson Lounge; After Chats will take place in the theatre immediately after each performance.

2/17-26 - Theatre2Film3:
Stay With Me

Story byMark Colson and CJ Valle

Writers Stuart Heinlein, CJ Valle, Katherine Schooler, Mykayla Smith,
Bethany Heinlein, Amy Wagenaar, Jeff Wray, Mark Colson

EAST LANSING, February 6, 2017 – Michigan State University embarks on its 3rd Initiative of Theatre2Film in this production of Stay With Me, which runs Friday February 17-26. All performances will be held in the Fairchild Theatre at the MSU Auditorium, ticket information can be found below.

Four years ago, Mark Colson, Assistant Professor of Media Acting, proposed the idea of writing an original work for the stage and then shooting it as a feature film. The focus of the project would hinge on MSU students as writers, editors, producers, actors, musicians, stage crew, film crew, location scouts, etc. etc. etc. You get the picture: hundreds of students from across campus are working together to create and explore the application and transition of an art form. Colson made multiple connections between the colleges of Arts and Letters, Communication Arts and Sciences, and Music, which expanded Theatre2Film far beyond just the Department of Theatre and into a University project. Now producing its 3rd project, performances of Stay With Me will begin on the stage of the Fairchild, and then go into film production to create a fully-produced feature film version that will appear at the Traverse City Film Festival in July 2017. (by the way, the 4th script for Theatre2Film is already underway and plans to be produced this Fall)

Stay With Me begins as a drama surrounding family and the struggles of farm-life, then quickly descends into a classic psychological thriller using modern day depictions of a vanishing and dilapidated America.  It explores broken dreams, the disintegration of the American family, and the loss of tradition.  The story acts as a psychological exploration of what happens to people when they cling too closely to the past, and of the emotional cost involved in breaking free from the established boundaries of family and heritage.  As the story escalates, the characters are drawn into a manufactured reality, and the intense delusion that accompanies it, when the mind is pushed to its furthest, ‘go-no-more’ extreme.

Directed by John Lepard (Guest Artist from Williamston Theatre)

Performances held in the Fairchild Theatre at MSU Auditorium Building.
