10/10 - THE DOWNEASTER THEATRE - “THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER” READING

The Downeaster Theatre will bring “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” to its own stage, 1120 N Pennsylvania Ave, Lansing, MI 48906, for one night only, Wednesday, October 10, at 7pm.

Ten years after interviewing for and writing The Laramie Project, five members of the Tectonic Theatre Project return to Laramie, Wyoming, to try to understand the long-term effects of Matthew Shepard’s murder. They found a town wrestling with its legacy and its place in history.

“We opened our first season with The Laramie Project, so this production brings our first year full circle and celebrates Matthew Shephard’s life near the 20th anniversary of his death,” said director Kathryn Willis.

This event is free to the public, with a $5 donation suggested. Visit http://www.thedowneastertheatre.comfor more information.

Washing Machine Needed

COSTUME SHOP NEEDS WASHING MACHINE

We just had a service call regarding our non-functioning washer, which has resulted in the following: Our current washer is basically dead. We would like to put out a call for a possible donation to replace it. Because of the type of washing we do here at the Costume Shop, there are criteria:  It needs to be Heavy Duty, Large Capacity – and an old school model: all mechanical controls, not the newer electronic systems that automate everything.  (this is per discussion with our repair guy)

Any “Friends of The Costume Shop” out there – with a working washer they are looking part ways with –  that both fits these criteria and they’re willing to donate to a worthy cause? We have the ability to transport.

im̆ áGen 2018 - One Good Day

im̆ áGen 2018 ONE GOOD DAY
Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23, 2018

    • Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

    • Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Pasant Theatre

$18.50 for general public plus applicable fees $13.50 for students plus applicable fees whartoncenter.com
517.432.2000 or 1.800.WHARTON

A staged concert of One Good Day,a new musical by Rona Siddiqui and Liz Suggs, is coming to Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre September 22-23, 2018 as part of the ĭmáGen collaboration between MSU College of Arts & Letters Department of Theatre and Wharton Center Institute for Arts & Creativity. One Good Day is a feel-good show celebrating romantic comedies and finding hope. Tickets are available at the official source to purchase Wharton Center tickets online, whartoncenter.com, at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

Each year since 2014, ĭmáGen selects a new musical to be presented under the guidance of a Broadway-caliber director showcasing Broadway stars. These veteran professionals are matched with local high school students and MSU Musical Theatre and Dance students as part of the Musical Theatre Immersion Program at MSU.

"I'm not sure of a better collaboration project out there,” says Brad Willcuts, MSU Department of Theatre Assistant Professor and director of the ĭmáGen program. “Broadway actors, directors and writers are constantly saying how special and exciting our program is. I think we are the best in the country for what we can provide to the creative team and the students."

Lansing Catholic High School student Rachael Dec participated in the ĭmáGen program the last few years and says, “It’s a great learning experience! I really enjoy getting to work with the college students and the equity actors. They inspire me to work harder and strive to do better!“

MSU Department of Theatre graduate Ryan Duda credits the ĭmáGen program for pushing him as an actor. “It was also the most respected I’ve felt in the rehearsal room. The creative team's communication was clear and effective, and they never missed an opportunity to make a moment educational. This successful balance of creating a professional atmosphere that could coexist with an educational one led me to learn more about myself and my craft than I had ever done in one rehearsal process.”

One Good Day, taking a cue from beloved ‘90s rom-com movies like Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail and more, follows popular NYC therapist Janey Hanks through 24 hours to test the theory of whether - like in the movies - your whole life can change in a day. It’s a hilarious, feel-good show, that embraces hope and asks whether or not we expect too much or too little out of life and love. But, mostly, it's a show about the everlasting virtue of hope.

The creative team behind One Good Day is almost entirely composed of women, including a female composer, a female writer and a female director, who will be staying after each performance to conduct an exclusive after-chat about the process of creating the show.

Several visiting artists are part of One Good Day, including: director, Kate Wetherhead (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Legally Blonde/Broadway); musical director, Brad Gardner (Mean Girls, The Addams family/Broadway); actor, Jessica Fontana (Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella/Broadway; Once Upon a Mattress/Off-Broadway); actor, Blake Whyte (Wicked, Mamma Mia!/Broadway); and stage manager, Nan Luchini. For a complete listing of the One Good Day team, visit http://theatre.msu.edu/people/guest-artists-series/

One Good Day is the recipient of the ASCAP Mary Rodgers/Lorenz Hart Award. It was named "one of the best new musicals of 2014" by the Festival of New American Musicals and was selected for the ASCAP/DreamWorks Musical Theatre Workshop with Stephen Schwartz in LA. The musical was also featured at the 2017 Page to Stage Songwriter Showcase in London. It can be spotted next at the 29th Annual National Association for Musical Theatre Festival in NYC at New World Stages.

Ryan Scott Oliver, the composer and writer of last year’s ĭmáGen project, We Foxes, says, “ĭmáGen highlights MSU's connectivity to the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. MSU is beginning to be the best in the country for what it gives new musical writers!"

ĭmáGen is a partnership between MSU Department of Theatre and Wharton Center with additional support from University Outreach and Engagement.

Ixion's Fears & Phobias was a well received cluster of new playlets exploring anxieties, dreads and obsessive compulsive fandom, which left us laughing and considering. Now as we leave our fears in the rear view mirror we look towards hope.

Calling all writers!

We are seeking short plays around the theme "Hope". Whether it's finding it, losing it or maintaining it, we want to see your stories. Whatever hope (or lack thereof) means to you, we look forward to any genre of its exploration.

We
will select up to eight scripts for further development, including staged readings and possibly full production in May of 2019. The full production will be directed by Danica O'Neill
Guidelines for your Hope Submission(s) are:
- No more than 4 actors
-Simple or abstracted setting
-No more than 12 pages
-Submissions must include only first initial and last name of author. No bios are to be included.
-Multiple submissions are allowed
-Digital submissions only to ixionensemble@gmail.com
-Deadline is 5 p.m September 30, 2018.

Peppermint Creek Theatre presents Play Book #1: Marjorie Prime
by Jordan Harrison
Directed by Bob Robinson

ONE TIME ONLY
Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 7 p.m.

It’s the age of artificial intelligence, and 85-year-old Marjorie — a jumble of disparate, fading memories — has a handsome new companion who’s programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? In this richly spare, wondrous new play, Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits — if any — of what technology can replace.

Featuring Jeff Boerger, Emily Clark, Jan Lockwood, Adam Woolsey and Jim Coyer
Light Design by Ted Daniel. Sound Design by Leon Green.

Lasts about 90 minutes and there will be a brief talk back.

Miller Performing Arts Center
6025 Curry Ln, Lansing, MI 48911

All staged readings in our Play Book series are brought to you for FREE!
