Three MSU shows coming in under the radar

3/29/2019

I was recently made aware of three productions at MSU that had escaped my previous GLUT Radar, and/or the notice ofmy “Theatre Leaders” email list who proofread the calendar each month. There are probably more “in the know” who should be on my Leaders list. Feel free to add yourself - just email me your info. (This is part of why we call it the GLUT; there is "anexcessivelyabundantsupply” oftheatre in this area!)

The audience controls the action through mobile application, vocal participation, and movement. The performance is 60 – 80 minutes with scripted and choreographed sections.

STUDENT PRODUCTION SERIES:

Second Stage Productions is a student-driven outlet for the creation of innovative theatre in the MSU Department of Theatre. Students are encouraged to express themselves through directing, acting, design, and production in a collective, experimental atmosphere of trial and error. Through this production organization, students are given the opportunity to think imaginatively in order to achieve their vision for storytelling on the stage.

3/29-30-31 - Three Tall Women
by Edward Albee
From Dramatists Play Service:
“A young lawyer…has been sent to the home of a client, a ninety-two-year-old woman…[whose] long life is laid out for display, no holds barred. She cascades from regal and charming to vicious and wretched as she wonders about and remembers her life: her husband and their cold, passionless marriage; her son and their estrangement. How did she become this? Who is she?”

OPHELIA AND THE SNOW QUEEN a fast-paced romp through fairyland

One more show Saturday at 1pm!I JUST got this press release… have had some computer glitches today…
Here’s a fun hour and a half created by P.K Van Voorhees at Hannah Community Center!

The East Lansing Dance and Theatre Co, the Studio Performing Arts Center’s performing company, will be presenting an original dance ballet entitled,OPHELIA AND THE SNOW QUEEN, A Ballet in One Act March 22 and 23. The show is an original story combining dance, physical theatre and movement and clarifying narration by Artistic Director P.K. Van Voorhees and presented by a cast of 14 young dancers, aged 6-16.

From an angry Hobgoblin that builds an evil mirror, intent on conquering Heaven, bumbling Magical Wizards who create a magical sword, a village boy sent on a very confusing and never-ending mission, a young girl who is his best friend, and mischievous Pixies that befriend the Boy in the Forest, there is a flurry of activity when they encounter a Majestic Snow Owl that kidnaps the Boy, a well-meaning but self-serving Sorceress with a stunning Garden who tries to delay the girl, a Misery Bird who guards the sword day and night, and a group of Angels who assist Ophelia in her darkest moments along with the Spirit of her Mother.

OPHELIA AND THE SNOW QUEENis a fast-paced romp through fairyland with magic, testing the limits of faith in self, Evil vs. Good, a previously sweet Village-Girl-turned-Evil-Snow-Queen and one brave 9-year-old very true friend. For all ages; tickets are $10 through http://snow-queen.eventbrite.comor at the door of the Auditorium 30 minutes prior to showtime. March 22 at 7pm and March 23 at 1pm at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Rd., East Lansing (at Burcham).

EAST LANSING, MI – Registration is now taking place for TAKE IT FROM THE TOP. This series of thrilling, hands-on workshops is offered through Wharton Center Institute for Arts & Creativity. Participants – from pre-teens to young adults and beyond – receive a unique opportunity to train with a brilliant team of leading Broadway professionals. Former instructors include such talented Broadway performers as 2014 Tony Award® winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Kinky Boots), Billy Porter, and Shoshana Bean, who is set to begin her run in Waitress on Broadway.

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP was developed by Tony Award® nominee and Legally Blonde star, Laura Bell Bundy, and Paul Canaan, assistant dance captain of 2014’s most Tony® nominated show, Kinky Boots. Canaan says, “We started TAKE IT FROM THE TOP as a catalyst for creativity in life. We bring a team of world-class artists at the top of the performing arts field to Michigan and immerse students in a full week of training in music, drama and dance – and advance their skills, no matter how accomplished, or inexperienced, they are. This is a truly unique educational experience, and it culminates in a FREE performance at the end of the week!”

Porter says, "I remember when I was a kid growing up, trying to figure out how to live as a creative person. I had lots of influences and teachers and people who helped me. Without those people, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm so grateful when I get the opportunity to give back and share what I know with aspiring young artists."

The Same Moon tells immigrant/refugee stories

4/11-21- PEPPERMINT CREEK THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES OPENING OF
“The Same Moon: Lansing”
…a play featuring the voices of Lansing immigrants and refugees

Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to announce the two-week run of the original play, The Same Moon: Lansing, a play written from the interviews of local immigrants and refugees.

National theatre-makers The Telling Project return to Lansing after an award winning production in 2016 focused on veterans to pilot their brand new programming arm. This year the Texas-based organization will premiere a new arm of their mission casting an eye on the immigrant/refugee experience.  Lansing immigrants or refugees were interviewed and their stories have been turned into a theatrical production that will be both honest, personal, uplifting, and enlightening.  Audiences won’t want to miss this completely original documentary style theatrical experience, proving we all live under the same moon.

Telling Project audiences from across the country rave “No words can describe the brilliance of these performances. My heartfelt gratitude to the tellers. All your stories are so intellectually and emotionally honest and compelling. You have given the public such important perspective.”

Peppermint Creek Artistic Director, Chad Swan-Badgero, speaks about the groundbreaking nature of this production, “The Telling Project has been visiting communities all of the country for over 10 years to document the stories of veterans, and Peppermint Creek was lucky to be one of those communities in 2016.  The process of that show and the impact it had on our audiences was not just moving and powerful, but also a production that came closest to almost any other show we’ve produced in addressing our mission statement. We are so honored that The Telling Project has chosen Lansing and Peppermint Creek to launch their new focus on immigrants and refugees.  This is a professional organization that has worked around the world, and they have chosen PCTC to pilot this new venture.  That’s tremendous and extremely humbling.”

Blake Bowen, who directed the 2016 production focused on veterans, will also helm this production of The Same Moon: Lansing.  “What I’ve enjoyed most about this production is learning the realities of the immigration process and realizing how much of my concept of “the immigrant experience” has been shaped by popular narratives for decades. Since I never had to explore this topic in depth it was easy for me to believe that all stories were relatively similar – a person leaves their home country in fear of their own safety, pitches their stake in American soil, and builds a future for generations to come. I’ve been enlightened and humbled by this incredible cast. My hope is that audiences will be as well.”

The production will take place at Peppermint Creek’s performance venue, the Miller Performing Arts Center, 6025 Curry Lane, Lansing MI 48911.  The show will run Thursday, April 11 – Sunday, April 14, and Thursday, April 18 – Sunday, April 21, 2019.  Show times are Thursday – Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm.  Tickets can be ordered online at http://www.peppermintcreek.org, and are $15 general admission, and $10 for students/seniors 65+.

This production of The Same Moon: Lansing is directed by PCTC’s Co-Artistic Director, Blake Bowen, and stars Lansing community members performing their own stories. This production is generously underwritten by Foster Swift Collins and Smith Law Firm, Sam & Mary Austin, and Karen & Jerry Jennings.

Farewell John Minsky

3/20/2019

We are sad to learn of the passing of local actor JOHN MINSKY due to lung cancer. He was a wonderful actor and an inspiring guy, full of positive energy, and always with a twinkle in his eye.

He was also well known in mid-Michigan for his 25 years as an actor at the Lansing  Riverwalk Theatre, Lansing Civic Players, and Lansing Community College Theatre Program, as well as the Ledges Playhouse in Grand Ledge. He loved music, politics, nature, and a good laugh.  His famous saying and wisest advice was “Life is Good, huh?!”

A memorial service to honor John’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on May 18 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns.  The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 1:00 P.M. until service time. Those wishing to make a contribution in John’s honor may do so with Michigan State University Opera Programs by contacting Rebecca Surian, Senior Director of Development at the MSU College of Music, 333 W. Circle Drive, Room 103, East Lansing, MI 48824, (517) 353-9872 or [email protected].
