Lansing Catholic presents Fade Out; Fade In

2/27/2018

Justin Banks recommends to the GLUT:

Lansing Catholic High School's spring play is "Fade Out, Fade In”

Lansing Catholic High School presents the musical comedy "Fade Out, Fade In".  Set in the 1930s, this musical is a hilarious story about a young usherette accidentally becoming a movie star.  This show has great music and dancing and lots of fun.  (This was Carol Burnett's first show on Broadway, I understand)

Shows are March 9-10, 16-17 at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are available at http://www.ticketor.com/lchsdrama  Check out this show in the school's newly renovated auditorium with comfortable seats.

GLUT Glitches?

2/26/2018

I’ve heard from a couple of you GLUTsters who were accidentally unsubscribed from the list due to clicking on an email ostensibly from the group. I’ve put both subscribers back on, successfully, I think.

Checking the total number of subscribers, still 921… watching for unexpected decline… Most people just email ME directly when they want to be taken off the list. mailto:JSZussman@gmail.com  Although there may be a way to do it online at Google Groups. Anyway, I’m trying to keep a closer eye on the list total since these unwanted “unsubscribe” notifications.

A couple others have received a strange message from GLUT in arabic characters. One of these recipients is a smarter techie than me and reported, "On that e-mail, I clicked on the three dots to the right and chose "remove from forum." I was then able to mark that individual e-mail as spam.”

Hope that works for any of the rest of you troubled by non-GLUT messages. My emails may be pretty random, but they’re always linked to Lansing theatre and never in Arabic!

Jane

Got any Boxes with Lids?

The Costume Shop, managed by Riverwalk theatre, http://rwtcostumeshop.com  is asking for donations of plastic bins with lids in any size. They could also use banker boxes with lids and the boxes that reams of paper come in with lids.  They are getting busy with a lot of rearranging since the first of the year with still more to do.

Please drop the bins and boxes at The Costume Shop during business hours:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 3pm to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm.
It’s located at 1131 May Street - off Pennsylvania, just north of Saginaw.
Bring your boxes and use the opportunity to take a peek inside this magical place - and maybe be inspired for next halloween?

Peppermint Creek Theatre Co presents a free staged reading of
"Bunny, Bunny: Gilda Radner, a sort of romantic comedy"

This autobiographical play recaptures the non-sexual, but deeply felt relationship between Gilda Radner, one of Saturday Night Live's original Not Ready-for-Prime-Time players, and Alan Zweibel, who was a writer for the show. Alternately comic and heartbreaking, the play follows these two overgrown kids as they ride their bumper-car lives right up to Radner's death from ovarian cancer. Their loyalty and love glows through every scene. “Play Book” is a FREE staged reading series to generate further discussion of our season theme, “Who’s Leading”. Reading features: Blake Bowen, Laura Croff, and Heath Sartorius.

PSST - are you 55 or older?

2/24/2018

PSST! Riverwalk Theatre has a new event for those 55 and up!

P.S.S.T. stands for Preshow Senior Second Thursdays.

The inaugural PSST event precedes the Black Box show, White Buffalo, on March 1 — (which is now the FIRST Thursday, since this show’s run has been pushed ahead one week due to predicted flooding, which, luckily spared the theatre!)

Riverwalk patrons aged 55 and up will enjoy a new opportunity to meet new old friends at this fun reception/party/backstage peek before the second Thursday performance of every Riverwalk adult show. This free reception begins at 6 pm (the show, optional, starts at 7; Thursday bargain show senior tickets are only $8 - $20 for musicals.)

Patrons will mix and mingle (with refreshments) on the opposite stage from where the night’s show will perform (Black Box/Main Stage.) They will get a backstage look at the set-in-progress and get some news about that upcoming show (with perhaps some volunteer opportunities offered; set painting, anyone?)

The current-show director will also pop in to tell a little about the show folks are about to see. Membership and volunteer sign up will be available — plus a members-only drawing for a $20 gift certificate to Riverwalk.

This group offers fellowship and fun, and we hope it will help new Riverwalk members and volunteers get more personally connected to Riverwalk opportunities.

PSST dates for the rest of the season will be at 6 pm on the second Thursday of each show:

March 1 White Buffalo
March 22 Lily the Felon’s Daughter
April 26 Bud, Not Buddy
May 17 Scotland Road
June 14 Spamalot (musical)

I will be one of the hosts of this event this Thursday - hope a lot of you will check it out! See you there! - Jane Zussman

Buffalo flood reschedule; sandbaggers needed

2/21/2018

In light of flooding predictions around the Museum Drive/Riverwalk Theatre/Impression 5 area, Riverwalk has MOVED THE BUFFALO. White Buffalo will NOT open Thursday, Feb. 22, but March 1 - and run for two weekends.

(Note, this means the PSST - Preshow Senior Second Thursday get-together will be the FIRST Thursday of Buffalo, not the second, so…way to start out confusing people... see you there at 6 pm March 1 for snacks, gift certificate drawing and fun!)

Can YOU help sandbag tomorrow (Thursday)? Predictions are for flooding to peak Thursday night. In preparation, we are assembling a volunteer team of sand-bag fillers to help Leroy Cupp and Bob Nees sandbag the vulnerable areas of Riverwalk Theatre - in cooperation with others doing the same at I-5.

IF YOU WANT TO HELP - email your text-able cell phone to Manager Mike at rwt@RiverwalkTheatre.com. He is setting up an Emergency Flood Team group text to give you specifics on the sandbag project. We think it will be mid-day tomorrow, Thursday.

Thus With a Kiss I Die - immersive theatre

THUS WITH A KISS I DIE TO PREMIERE AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Innovative Immersive Theatre Performance Utilizes Full Space of MSU Auditorium

Michigan State University’s Department of Theatre is offering a unique theatrical experience with the premiere of Thus With A Kiss I Die. The production examines intolerance between a multitude of social groups and diverges from traditional performance styles, as the audience will have the opportunity to intimately witness scenes in various locations of the MSU Auditorium building.

The journey begins in the Fairchild Theatre, at a small southern university’s 1958 production of Romeo & Juliet, where a progressive guest director from New York has controversially cast a white student as Juliet and a black student as Romeo. The play addresses numerous social issues of the past and examines their similarities and differences today.

The audience is encouraged to track one specific storyline, explore several rooms, follow a single character, or stay in one space and let the action come to them. Thus, each audience member’s experience will be unique. There will also be stationary areas for audience members with decreased mobility to sit and watch, should they need.

This endeavor was made possible by Lilly Fellows program funding and by collaboration with Third Rail Projects, an immersive theatre company in Brooklyn, New York.

Thus With A Kiss I Die runs Friday, February 16th through Sunday, February 25th at the Fairchild Theatre in the MSU Auditorium. For more performance information, please visit www.theatre.msu.edu

Please visit or contact Wharton Center for Performing Arts to purchase tickets.
