Michigan Shakespeare Festival in Jackson & Canton

"CRUNCH MONTH"

Hello fellow Shakespeare lovers!

I am writing as a Board Member of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, but also a theatre director, actor, and audience member myself. And I'm writing because this is one of those times that we most need your help!

I call this period "crunch month" - that month when all professional salaries are due, sets and costumes are being built, and costs are at their highest all year - but opening night is still a month away, ticket sales have not yet taken off, and sponsorships and grant money have not yet rolled in for the summer. And that leads to a monetary "crunch" at the worst time of the year.

When I first moved to Michigan from NYC, I came across this small outdoor theatre festival in Jackson, Michigan that performed outstanding Shakespeare productions in the park - and from the first show I saw I was hooked. The Festival has since grown tremendously in scope and nature, has for many years been located indoors in state-of-the-art, air-conditioned, bug-free splendor, and has continued to present remarkable theatre for five weeks every summer.

This year, the Festival is expanding to include three weeks in Canton, MI as well as two ongoing weeks in Jackson (for the record, we do not ever plan to leave Jackson as our home base!).

But the Festival needs your help. Even when ticket sales are at their best, they cover only a portion of the true costs of running a theatre, let alone an entire summer festival season. The rest depends on you - donors, sponsors, friends, fellow theater-lovers.

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival is a professional Actors Equity Association-LORT theatre festival, featuring all-professional actors, artistic staff, and technicians.

Because the Festival maintains high artistic professional standards that result in top quality productions utilizing artists of the highest caliber, it is no wonder that the company is the most award-winning theatre in the state, garnering not only local but national acclaim. Reviews called last season's productions "Outstanding" (MLive), "You may never again see this play done so well" (Encore Michigan),  "Remarkably relevant" (Examiner), "Four out of Four stars" (Detroit Free Press), and "Exquisite...gorgeous... perfect" (Jackson Citizen Patriot).  BroadwayWorld named last season's production of Hamlet the Best Shakespearean Production of 2014.

This July 9- August 16, 2015 the Festival will offer William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Henry IV, along with Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals, at both venues - in Jackson and in Canton. Tickets are now on-sale. Purchasing your tickets early also helps our cash flow.

Won't you please take a moment to remember the Michigan Shakespeare Festival with a donation or sponsorship? It's easy. Just make out a check to the Michigan Shakespeare Festival and mail it to the address below or go to our website for a secure donation link. We'll thank you, we'll applaud you, we'll salute you with another season of awesome Shakespeare. And you'll know that you made the difference.

Thanks in advance - and see you at our shows this summer!

Ronald P. Baumanis, Vice Chair

If you’re not sure how you’d like to volunteer – or need more information, or to sign up for volunteering -  please contact Katie Doyle: kdoylemuses@gmail.com , or Miranda Hartman: mirasu1024@gmail.com .

Come enjoy the Renegade Theatre Festival which takes place August 13, 14 and 15, 2015, in Lansing's Old Town.

Get ready to see war from a totally different perspective. You will not want to miss the Michigan premiere of 'Grounded' just weeks after the close of its New York run! Directed by Phil Powers and starring Deborah Keller, this thoroughly engrossing one-woman show by award-winning playwright George Brant takes a timely and powerful look at the ethics and costs of fighting wars by remote control. A fighter pilot, upon becoming pregnant, is reassigned to operating drones from a windowless trailer, and finds the experience more taxing and troubling than flying combat missions.

Oscar winner Anne Hathaway recently starred as The Pilot at the Public Theatre in New York, under the direction of Julie Taymor, and that production closed just two and a half weeks before Theatre Nova’s will open.

The New York Times’ Charles Isherwood wrote that the play “draws a nuanced and haunting portrait of a woman serving in the United States Armed Forces coming under pressure as the human cost of war, for combatants as well as civilians, slowly eats away at her well-armored psyche.” In an interview with NPR, Taymor called the subject matter “invigorating and disturbing,” and noted that drone pilots “have to sit and linger over the bombs that are dropped … They are safe physically, but their minds are not safe."

"A searing piece of writing...gripping...a must-see." - The Guardian

“Five Stars. Outstanding.” – The London Standard

"As close to perfection as is possible to imagine...Grounded is a powerful, hallucinogenic experience." - What's On Stage

(You Lansing-ites who have enjoyed Deborah Keller’s work at LCC, Peppermint Creek and Riverwalk may want to make the trek to Ann Arbor for this exciting new show. - Jane)

The Two Musketeers! By Jon Jory

Lansing Community College Performing Arts
The Two Musketeers!
 By Jon Jory
A comedy adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, in the American college premiere directed by John Lennox

7 p.m. each night, Wednesday June 17, through Sunday, June 21, 2015

LCC Outdoor Amphitheatre, located on Washington between Dart Auditorium and the Gannon Building
                        Rain location: Dart Auditorium

When a small acting company eliminates one Musketeer from their production of The Three Musketeers due to budget constraints, the rest of the cast must bravely sally forth with only two. The classic tale of D’Artagnan and his sword-fighting friends is presented by a hilariously self-aware cast, with romance, wit, and derring-do to spare. This low-tech, high-comedy adaptation is a witty and slightly bawdy send-up of Alexandre Dumas' beloved adventure.

The cast includes Michael Boxleitner, Dustin Dikes, Patrick Foster, Sally Hecksel, Connor Kelly, Boris Nikolovski, Heath Sartorius, Anna Szabo and Monica Tanner, with Matt Evancho, Jesse Frawley, Ben Guenther, and Nick Lemmer.

Free! Part of LCC’s Summer Stage Under the Stars 2015, an annual performing arts festival featuring a music, theatre and dance presented at LCC’s outdoor stage and in Dart Auditorium. Bring a picnic, blanket and lawn chairs!
