Jon Stars Weekly Facebook Show

1/24/2022

Every Monday Jon Stars Facebook variety music show

Mitch Stutes’ mom, Leora, is his biggest promoter, and she’s asked me to share info about his weekly Facebook Live event at 7 pm each Monday night. It’s an hour of his singing/playing guitar and friendly chitchat about music with original songs and such. You may know Mitch as “Jonathan Stars” his stage name. Some of you may even remember his late dad, Marion Stutes, who was also active in local theatre.

You can go to Facebook and search for “Jon Stars” and then click “events” to get the link to each show or follow him. You can also play recordings of previous shows.

Leora says, "His program is open to all. Just click on the link at 7 pm tonight and you will automatically be connected. You don’t even have to have a Facebook account. It will be over by 8 pm or before. It's on every Monday night at 7, so if you enjoy the music, please join us whenever you can. If you come, Mitch would love have you sign in on the right side of the screen so he knows who is there."

Can YOU donate these props?

1/20/2022

From Sandy Norton, Prop Queen of Riverwalk Theatre

People often ask us in the prop loft what we need for our collection of props. The usual response is, “We really don’t know until we need it.” We try to anticipate common items that are about to become extinct. Not long ago we realized that we no longer rely on phone books like we once did and we collected a few while we could get them. Likewise, we expanded our collection of land line phones when people began to give them up for their cell phones.

Now, thinking ahead, we believe we can use a couple of discarded electronic tablets and smart phones. Since space is always a concern for all departments at Riverwalk, we can only use one or two of each type but since styles of electronics evolve so rapidly, we would like a small collection of various models.

Looking back, we would like to have a Selectric typewriter to add to our collection of typewriters. And finally, we would like a few army blankets to add to our collection of military equipment.

If any of you out there have any of these items and don’t know what to do with them, please consider donating them to Riverwalk Theatre. Contact Sandy Norton to arrange for delivery. mailto:sandyknorton@ameritech.net

Ixion is seeking new (to us) or aspiring DIRECTORS for three of our short plays to be included in "Let's Eat!" our May production. The plays are each ten minutes in length and feature our relationship with food or beverage as one of the themes.

Auditions for "Let's Eat!" will be late March or early April. Rehearsals will begin thereafter. Performances are May 13, 14, 20 & 21 at the Lansing Mall in the former Tequila Cowboy.

New directors will be responsible for casting and rehearsal coordination with their cast and other directors.* Each new director will be paired with a director who has worked with Ixion in the past and is directing one of the other shorts. This pairing is intended to provide a resource and sounding board for new directors.

Mentor directors for "Let's Eat!" are Judith Evans, Heath Sartorius and Nick Lemmer.

Persons interested in directing should contact Ixion Artistic Director jeff croff via email at ixionensemble@gmail.comby January 31, 2022 with Let's Eat! Director in the subject line. Any questions can be directed to jeff via email or phone, 517.775.4246.

* Please Note: Rehearsals and auditions will be held in a format that follows best guidance in addressing pandemic concerns at that time.

Shop Schüler Books to keep Summer Circle Free!

MSU Friends of Theatre and Schuler Books and Music Join Forces to Keep Summer Circle Theatre Free

Michigan State University Friends of Theatre and Schuler Books in Okemos and Grand Rapids are joining forces to help keep Summer Circle Theatre free to audiences in 2022.

For 60 years, Summer Circle Theatre has provided free performances of musicals, comedies, drama and children’s shows to the community throughout the month of June. In addition, a free Kids’ Camp provides area youth with theatre skills designed to help build more confidence and acquaint them with the joys of drama.

The pandemic has put free performances in jeopardy, as there is a significant cost to the Department of Theatre to offer these productions to audiences at no charge. Schuler Books is joining forces with the department’s Friends of Theatre group to assist in funding the 2022 season.

During the week of January 23-29, Schuler’s will provide a percentage of the portions for any sale of books, music, or other merchandise (except magazines and gift cards) from either their Okemos or Grand Rapids location. Schuler’s offers a wide selection of new and used books, puzzles, games and local products, as well as greeting cards, magazines and educational toys and games for children. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it is an opportunity to both find a perfect gift and help support Summer Circle.

If ordering online, use the code MSUFRIENDS to ensure donations go to Summer Circle. If shopping in person, mention that code and the special promotion to support this cause with your purchase.

Friends of Theatre is a volunteer organization comprised of community individuals who help support and promote Summer Circle Free Theatre and the MSU Department of Theatre students through a variety of events and fundraising efforts. In addition to the Schuler’s event, interested donors may also make a gift to the Summer Circle Diamond Anniversary Endowment online at http://theatre.msu.edu.

Ixion Cancels “Begets”

Ixion Ensemble Cancels March Production

Ixion Ensemble has canceled their upcoming production of "Begets: Fall of a High School Ronin", which was slated to open late March, due to rising COVID concerns.

"While we are saddened by the decision, we felt this was the most prudent path for the safety of our actors," notes Ixion Artistic Director jeff croff. "This show was going to require large amounts of stage combat and would have kept a cast of twenty in close proximity for multiple hours a day for rehearsals. We felt this put our production at odds with guidance for safety during the pandemic. We hope to revisit the production in a future season."

Ixion still plans to go forward with the remainder of its season at this time.

9 Parts of Desire at Williamston

Williamston Theatre presents 9 Parts of Desire
by Heather Raffo

Co-Directed by Ed Nahhat and Sarab Kamoo
January 27 - February 27, 2022

Featuring Sarab Kamoo in a one-woman, tour-de-force performance, the play details the lives of nine Iraqi women that span the decades between the first and second Gulf Wars and occupation. It is a portrait of the extraordinary (and ordinary) lives of a whole cross-section of Iraqi women: a sexy painter, a radical Communist, doctors, exiles, wives and lovers. This work delves into the many conflicting aspects of what it means to be a woman in a country overshadowed by war.

Box office hours:
Tuesday - Friday
Noon - 6pm
