Note on the Play
Based on a true story, What if Wilhelmina features the character of Faith, a seven-year-old girl who is full of dread and “what ifs” when her cat, Wilhelmina, goes missing. Faith learns about the futility of worry and develops coping skills through music, movement, and the assistance of her two dads and some friendly puppets.

The adaptation for the stage of the children’s book What if Wilhelmina is the newest project of the MSU Theatre Department’s Sense-Ability Ensemble. The Ensemble is a group of MSU Theatre students who create innovative, multi-sensory, interactive performances for audiences that are neurodiverse.  The performers are trained to respond sensitively, tailoring sensory experiences to individual audience members, highlighting the power of diversity and ability, and striving to provide theatre access for all. As the Ensemble’s Artistic Director, Dionne O’Dell, has adapted this critically acclaimed children's book into a musical for children.

Meet our Guest Lecturer.
Dionne O’Dell is on the faculty of the Department of Theatre at Michigan State University, where she specializes in writing and directing plays for youth and community.  Previously, Dionne was the Associate Director of Education at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City.  Although primarily interested in writing plays with a social justice focus, in February 2010 her short film script, Dreadful Sorry (a ghost story), was awarded a $100,000 grant by the SC Film Commission and played to short film festivals around the US.  A proud member of Actors Equity Association, Dionne has also worked as a performer in regional theater productions, industrial films, and television commercials.  Currently Dionne is the Artistic Director of the MSU Sense-Ability Ensemble – a group of MSU Theatre students who create innovative, multi-sensory, interactive theatrical performances for audiences that are neurodiverse.

The Ensemble’s most recent production, What if Wilhelmina, will premiere at the MSU Arena Theater on March 8-17, 2024.     [email protected]

Locally produced documentary coming to LCC - Tuesday 2/27 at 2:10 pm at Dart Auditorium

LCC Historians at the Movies and the Historical Society of Greater Lansing present
Pave the Way: They Even Took the Dirt

The Historical Society of Greater Lansing (HSGL) produced a documentary in 2023 about the impact of I496 construction on Black neighborhoods. On Feb. 27 at 2:10 p.m., LCC Historians at the Movies in collaboration with HSGL is presenting the film in Dart Auditorium for students, LCC faculty and staff, and the community is invited.

Through interviews and footage, Pave the Way: They Even Took the Dirt explores the devastation wrought on a thriving Black neighborhood and business community, as homes and shops were torn down, turning once active streets into dead-ends to make way for the highway that would bisect the city from east to west.

The hour-long documentary will be followed by discussion and Q&A led by LCC History Prof. David Siwik with film coordinator Greta Haney-Trice and film editor Craig Jones.

LCC Historians at the Movies is a monthly gathering to watch films and discuss virtually with fellow viewers through WebEx chat or on x.com using #LCCHATM, led by LCC History faculty with interdisciplinary co-hosts. The Feb. 27 film showing is a special in-person Historians at the Movies event, and is part of LCC’s Black History Month offerings.

What If Wilhelmina offers an unforgettable experience, combining the magic of storytelling with the power of diversity and ability!

Dark Nights at Billtown staged reading coming up is
Phosphates and Fistfights by Dionne O'Dell
Directed by Rob Roznowski
Monday, February 19 at 7pm

Phosphates and Fistfights is a retelling of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s acclaimed short story The Yellow Wallpaper. Part One of the play confronts Jane’s psychological unravelling brought on by post-partum depression, restrictive gender roles, and isolation. It is dramatized through the framework of the suffrage movement in the 1890s, which Gilman was herself involved in. Part Two fast forwards to 1920, months prior to ratification, and highlights a family that is now living in a time of prohibition, the Comstock Laws/Suppression of Vice, and opposition to a woman’s right to choose. The narrative highlights how the characters persevere through fearlessness, resilience, science, and the hope for a better future.
No reservations required.
$10 suggested donation at the door.

Dionne O'Dell is faculty for the Department of Theatre at Michigan State University, where she specializes in writing and directing plays for youth & community. Previously, Dionne was the Associate Director of Education at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City. Although primarily interested in writing plays with a social justice focus.

Defend Yourself Discussion Sun. 2/11

2/10/2024

Doak Bloss invites Defend audiences to discuss, eat chili:

Theatre-going community!  If you saw "How to Defend Yourself" at Peppermint Creek Theatre Company last week or this week.... please consider attending "Afterthoughts".

This will be an opportunity to talk about this complex, important play with other audience members at 6:30 pm Sunday (tomorrow).  I will be facilitating the dialogue as I did after "The Minutes" last fall.  It should be a great opportunity to work through the play's unconventional structure and themes, and more importantly what we feel compelled to do, having watched it.

This will take place in the Sycamore Creek Church cafe (just outside where you saw the play).

Normally I like to have advance reservations for these, but this time it's okay to just show up unannounced.  I will have my killer Texas chili to share, and salad for vegetarians.  If you do want to let me know you're coming, my email is [email protected].
