9/11-21 - YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN: RIVERWALK'S SPECIAL 'CREATION'  - opens September 11

8/29/2014

Young Frankenstein 'comes to life' at Riverwalk Theatre on September 11-14 and 18-21.  This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic, based on Mel Brooks' smash hit film, follows young Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Josh Martin) as he attempts to complete his grandfather's masterwork and bring a corpse to life. With his hunchbacked servant, Igor (James Houska), bombshell lab assistant, Inga (Kayla Green), frightening housekeeper, Frau Blucher (Jane Zussman), and madcap fiancée, Elizabeth Benning (Veronica Gracia-Wing), Dr. Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster (Chris Goeckel) -- but not without monstrously hilarious repercussions.

Director Tom Ferris, music director James Geer and choreographer Fran Norton have assembled a cast of both stage veterans and newcomers, including: Mark Zussman, Mark Mandenberg, Stephanie Banghart, Angela Dill, Mark Bethea, Chris Bethea Jennifer Corvera, Mikaela Gould, Marcus Herndon, Keenan Kangas, Tim Beam, Mannon McIntosh, Ric Sadler, Sophia Vitello, Angela Wright, Tomie Shauver, and Sarah Hayner.

Young Frankenstein is alive, filled with laughs and offers a raucous musical score -- Transylvania Mania, Join the Family Business and the show-stopping classic Puttin' on the Ritz. It's just what the 'doctor' ordered.

DIRECT at Riverwalk?

8/27/2014

It's time to think about choosing a script to direct at Riverwalk. Deadline for submission November 28, 2014
Main Stage shows are full productions aimed at a wide audience and have open auditions. Black Box shows are small-cast, simple set, unusual, outside-the-box productions — and are precast by the director.

Please do not submit the same script for both venues and please limit your submissions to no more than three scripts for each venue.

Below is a preliminary breakdown of what the 2015-2016 season may look like, to help you define what dates you are available to direct, as requested on the Season Selection form.

In preparing your proposal(s), complete the appropriate form in its entirety and attach all pertinent information that may assist the Season Selection Committee in making a decision. Forms are available on the website - www.riverwalktheatre.com/submit-a-play

The Committee looks at many factors that include, but are not limited to: the potential for commercial as well as artistic success, production size and cost, and how a play fits into the season. Riverwalk attempts to balance the season by including a variety of shows that may appeal to the entire community:  children’s shows, musicals, dramas, comedies, well-known shows, lesser-known shows, classics, avant-garde shows, premieres of new scripts, etc. We are proud to have consistently produced plays that allow for a wide range of actors in terms of gender, age and ethnicity.

Note:  due to limited backstage and dressing room space, shows with large casts will present some special production challenges.  We expect casts to be accommodated within the existing  two dressing rooms and the green room during the run of the production.

Riverwalk has an extensive library of scripts and you are welcome to borrow from this library.  If you wish to peruse scripts we do not have, you are responsible for ordering and paying for those scripts.  Office Manager, Mike Siracuse, can help you obtain information concerning script availability and royalties.
Stan Gill musical comedy fairy tale scripts are available at www.sproutschildrenstheatre.com. They would be good candidates for the November/December children's show slot - although any children's/family show script will be considered, musical or nonmusical.

Please include one copy of the script with your submission form.  We prefer electronic scans of your scripts when possible.  Any others will be scanned by our office.  The scans will be sent to all members of the selection committee when they are received by the theatre office.

Please mail your proposal(s) by November 28, 2014 to:     Riverwalk Theatre
(or deliver to Mike Siracuse at the theatre office,                   P.O. Box 12249
Tuesday-Friday, 10AM-5:30PM)                                               Lansing, MI 48910
Or e-mail your electronic paperwork and script to [email protected]

Renegade repeat!

8/19/2014

8/21 - We are in luck, because one of the best-received shows from Renegade Theatre Festival is doing a repeat performance by popular demand, at 9 pm Thursday, August 21 at the MICA gallery, on Turner, near the Grand River intersection. Like the Renegade, admission will be free, but the basket is passed for donations to support this wonderful annual August festival in Old Town.

9 pm is COCK, by Peppermint Creek Theatre, is a powerful script, beautifully directed and acted, exploring the struggles of a gay(?) man who falls in love with a woman - and the guilt and conflicting emotions involved. The show is at times funny, and very thought provoking, directed by Shannon Bowen and starring Scott Laban, Devin Faught, Meghan Malusek and Michael Hays.

This show is ADULT themes and language. All brave, grownup and thoughtful theatre fans are encouraged to attend. The MICA gallery is a small space, (70 seats) so coming a bit early might be a good idea. It's very near the parking lot at the corner of Turner and Grand River.

(There was talk of repeating the also-very-popular LCC show "Boomer and the Imaginary Friend Revolt,"  at  7pm  but that seems to be NOT happening due to some actors not being available. You might want to check the Renegade Facebook page. At the moment, it does announce Cock, but NOT the LCC "Boomer" show, so... )

8/9 - "Here's to Life" Cabaret - one night only!

8/8/2014

We are excited to be attending the "Here's to Life" Cabaret tomorrow, Saturday August 9 at Riverwalk's Black Box -- some GREAT musicians (John Dale Smith music director and pianist with Jerry Krause - electric bass, tuba, and Jonathan Smith - percussion) and super singers and song-sellers Ken Beachler, Emily English Clark, Matt Eldred and Janine Novenske Smith will be delivering a refreshing assortment of songs - and there's WINE - two vouchers come with your $20 admission.

The lineup includes song favorites - “An Old Fashioned Wedding” by Irving Berlin,  “I Got It Bad/Mood Indigo” by Duke Ellington, “Being Alive” by Stephen Sondheim — and many I've never heard of that sound really interesting such as: “Learning to Let Go” by Bill Russell/Janice Hood from Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens; and “Stupid Things I Won’t Do” by William Finnfrom The Royal Family of Broadway.

The Cabaret starts at 8 and there's TALK of having a second show at 10 pm IF they get enough on the waiting list - but that's a big IF.  I'd suggest getting there early, since there are only 80 seats in the black box stage.www.riverwalktheatre.com - 517-482-5700
