MIKE HUGHES wants me to let you know…

4/27/2019

I realize this isn't about theater – well, occasionally it is – but I wanted to tell people that my website, http://www.mikehughes.tv, has been substantially revamped, revised, rebooted and all other re- things. It's mostly about TV, but should interest theater buffs, too. There are no ads or particular plans to add them.

For almost 30 years at the State Journal, I did previews of everything from high school shows to BoarsHead and Wharton; that changed in 2008, when the paper dropped all of its feature writers, including me. Some things did continue, including the Thespie awards, some local festival previews, my daily TV column and some of my TV features.

Alas, the paper recently trimmed again. The Thespies and the festival previews continue, but the TV column is gone and fewer of my TV stories are used. I told people they could find them on the website ... and they told me it was an awfully primitive site. It had been set up a decade ago, to fit my techno-skills, which are approximately zero.

That's when two nice and talented people, Pamela Weil and Matt Borghi, intervened. They set up the new look, complete with flash and color. It has the new version of the daily column (five daily best-bets), plus a weekly top-10 and individual stories (I still spend a month each year in Los Angeles with the Television Critics Association). All of those still go out to various papers, but there's also a news-and-comments section that's just for the website.

And yes, theater occasionally pops up. The “Fosse/Verdon” series (10 p.m. Tuesdays, FX) is very well-crafted; one of the best parts of the Gloria Estefan tribute (9 p.m. May 3 on WKAR) is the opening medley by the Broadway cast of “On Your Feet.”

Anyway, I can be reached at mailto:hughestvmike@aol.com and the website is at http://www.mikehughes.tv
.
Thanks,
Mike Hughes

Lamp at Midnight follows the trials and tribulations of Galileo and his fight against the Church to maintain his belief in his scientific findings and publications.
In 1610, Galileo published his observations made with his new telescope – specifically the phases of Venus and the moons of Jupiter. Galileo’s support of Copernicus’ heliocentric theory (earth revolves around the sun) was met with opposition from the Catholic Church. In 1633, the church found Galileo suspect of heresy and sentenced him to indefinite imprisonment. He was kept under house arrest until his death in 1642.

A Night of Play - one show left

4/12/2019

The Studio Performing Arts Center presents A Night Of Play - with one more show at 1pm TODAY, Saturday performing at The Downeaster Theatre, 1120 N. Pennsylvania (off of Oakland)

(There was a show tonight (Friday) but I was babysitting all day  and did not get to this last minute-email - sorry - Jane.)

Goldilocks is in a pickle. Charged with Breaking and Entering, she is on trial for invading the Bears' house, and she means to get out of it. After a host of colorful characters parade through the courtroom with their own interpretation of the events, the trial gets very convoluted and it's anyone's guess what the outcome will be.  Is she a sweet, unassuming girl just looking for a rest in a nearby dwelling? Or was she a conniving villain set out to naturally swindle people? The testimonies never stop in this fast-paced one act play!

Starring Apollo Reed as Melvin The Baliff, Christopher Smith as Judge Wallaby, Erika Stokstad as District Attorney Muffinhead, Georgia Davis and Attorney Wombat, Miki Perdikakis as Papa Bear, Samantha Dua as Mama Bear, Christine Keough as Baby Bear (aka “Tiffannii”) and Dr. Cantaloupe, Nina Lucker as Detective Clorox, Maria Gembel as The Little Pig That Was Not Eaten By The Wolf, Doran Lucker as Merwin The Big Bad Wolf, and Clara Keith as the mischievous Goldee Wynn Lock (aka “Goldilocks”).

This show is appropriate for all ages run a little over 1 hour with no intermission. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by cash or check 30 minutes prior to showtime at the door.

Musical Theatre Basics will focus on applying and bringing together the disciplines of singing, acting, and dancing, to create an effective presentation. Each semester, the Musical Theatre class strengthens these elements by selecting a Broadway showtune, interpreting it both musically and dramatically, then teaching the staging and choreography for performance. Our Musical Theatre classes explore a diversity of rehearsal tools and techniques in pursuit of a performance which is both dynamic and authentic.

Level 1 is prerequisite for the next level which will focus on aural skills, ear training, and sight singing.

By the end of this course, each student will have learned how to confidently present themselves and their material in a professional setting and how to choose material appropriate to the type and style of the audition. Level 1 is a prerequisite for the next level which will continue to build the student’s repertoire of audition selections, while also focusing on appropriate attire, selecting a headshot, and writing a resume.
