MSU Theatre Presents “UnScripted” Improv Comedy

Michigan State University’s Department of Theatre presents MSU UnScripted  Dec. 1-4 in Studio 60 in the Auditorium Building.

This night of comedy will feature MSU students performing a mix of classic and new improv games. Every performance will be completely different because everything is made up on the spot, or “unscripted,” inspired by audience suggestions. The 26 student performers have been placed on five different teams, and each team will perform twice over the run of five shows.
“One of my favorite principles of improvisation is the idea that there are no mistakes, only opportunities to explore a new idea,” said Director Sarah Hendrickson, MSU Department of Theatre Improvisation and Acting faculty. “Improv comedians are constantly looking at given circumstances with a new perspective and working as an ensemble to achieve a common goal. We strive, in the Department of Theatre, to help students push the boundaries of discovery to become artists and find the humor in things whenever possible.”
Tickets for MSU UnScripted are $23.50 for general admission, $21.50 for seniors and MSU faculty and staff, and $13.50 for students. Tickets are available online at whartoncenter.com, at the Wharton Center box office, or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

Performance Dates and Times
    • Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

    • Friday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m.

    • Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m.

    • Saturday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m.

You can LISTEN to Lee Helder and me as the murderously sweet old ladies in Arsenic and Old Lace radio show on Audio Air Force’s website https://audioairforce.com

Quite a few AAF recordings are there, and this one is at the top, entitled “Halloween 2022”. It includes a couple short new scripts and silly commercials with Arsenic and Old Lace showing up about a third of the way through.

"Everybody" coming to LCC Black Box

Lansing Community College Performing Arts presents:
Everybody

By Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Directed by Andy Callis

Wednesday through Saturday, November 16-19 @ 8 p.m.
Sunday, November 20 @ 2 p.m.
LCC Black Box Theatre - Gannon Building – Room 1422

A finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize, this modern riff on the 15th-century morality play “Everyman” follows Everybody (chosen from amongst the cast by lottery at each performance) as they journey through life’s greatest mystery: the meaning of living. “This is theatre rather unlike anything you might have seen…unusual, unconventional and eye-opening…Everyman is no barrel of laughs, being a morality play about death. EVERYBODY tells the same tale, with equal emotional heft; but it is not only provocative and involving, it is also funny. Wildly funny, in fact.” —Huffington Post.

Tickets    $5 - Students
        $10 – Seniors, LCC Faculty/Staff
        $15 – General Admission
Tickets sold at the door- cash and credit cards accepted.

11/11-20 - MSU Theatre Brings Roller Derby to the Arena Theatre

Michigan State University’s Department of Theatre presents For The Love Of (or, the roller derby play) Nov.11-20 in the Arena Theater of the MSU Auditorium Building.

The play, written by Gina Femia, follows the story of derby player Joy who can’t believe when she is invited to join the Brooklyn Scallywags along with the league’s star player, Lizzie Lightning. When bout bruises and scars transcend from the physical to emotional, Joy and her long-term partner, Michelle, discover how much they’re willing to sacrifice to follow their hearts.

“This show is about building community, finding connection, and fighting for what makes your heart come alive,” said Alexis Black, Director and MSU Assistant Professor of Movement and Acting. “In a post-pandemic world, we are all craving community, and this play celebrates just that.”

The production also features a unique collaboration with MSU’s College of Music. Sound Designer and MFA Design Candidate Thalia Pearce worked with David Biedenbender’s Composition students to compose original theme songs for each character in the roller derby team.

“It has been an exciting opportunity to work with composers to develop brand new material for this piece,” Pearce said. “My hope is that each of the audio themes developed through this collaboration reflects the uniqueness and individuality of the characters but also weaves into the overall sound of the ’pack’ that is beautifully diverse yet finds a way to fall into sync as a team.”

Tickets are $22.50 for general admission; $17.50 for MSU faculty, staff, and seniors; and $12.50 for students. Tickets are available online at whartoncenter.com, at the Wharton Center box office, or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.
